I love your reactions and how much you enjoy Ren and Chinchilla. She has some amazing stuff that I recommend: Fingers, the live and official video Elements, it says lyric video but it’s an actual video too. Little Girl Gone official video. She’s a force of nature.
I agree, both Ren and Chinchilla feel the music deeply. Ren calls her is musical sibling. They have a powerful connection when they perform together. This live performance is stunning. The song was was inspired by the loss of his friend Joe Hughes in 2010, that Ren also wrote about in the ending of Su!cide. I can’t decide if the song is written from Ren’s perspective as he struggles with the pain and loss and mental health struggles, or if it’s written from Joe’s perspective. But it’s beautifully haunting and clearly comes from a deep emotional place. It’s one of my favorites ❤
I'm pretty sure it's from Joe's perspective. "Fear and Sin follow me. Over the hills and valleys below; back home, and It suffocates me. I've been talking to the dead voices in my head. I wish I could get up and walk from this tomb (the tomb here is Joe's mind trapped with fear, sin, repetitive intrusive thoughts)". The last line is where Ren breaks the 4th wall and says "I miss you so".
I can't remember now if you've reacted to Suicide, but if not, I recommend it, both on its own merits, and for the insight if offers into what Ren is saying here. Also...I thought the song was written from Ren's perspective-- e.g., when he talks about the bodies in his room, I thought he was referring to being "haunted" by the ghost/death of Hughes, his best friend who committed suicide. I thought the "dead voices" in his head were those of Joe and others he's loved who've died, and I thought the "tomb" was a reference to the death of Ren's Self, both in the sense of having lost himself (forgotten "how to be me"), and in having been, in many senses, dead himself, unable to live his life since it was taken over by grief over Joe's death, as well as by being interred/in a living death due to his health problems, which have forced him (as he has written and spoken of) to spend as much as 23 hours a day in his room, while life passes him by and he watches others living their lives, moving forward, etc.
The song is for his friend, from the perspective of someone contemplating suicide and the dark place they are in. He's giving him a voice. Except for the last lines. They are from the survivor of a loved one's suicide. They are his own mind feeling the loss of his friend, Joe, who jumped from the Menai bridge in Wales when they were 19. He still feels it 13-14 years later. Suicide is so hard on those of us left behind. It leaves a wound that never quite heals. There's no closure. No answers. For Ren, there's even more of a wound because he was on his way to try and talk him down, but he arrived too late. And there was never a body found. Though he's in NO WAY to blame, that guilty feeling still follows you. Trust me. 33 years later after a tragedy in my own life and there is still a shadow of guilt that looms in my heart. I should have listened, is what my heart says. Logically, i know I'm not at fault, but OMG logic plays little part in the pain and gut. I hurt for him.
Awesome reaction. If you haven’t reacted to this, I highly recommend REN and Sam Tompkins improvising around Stevie Wonder (busking). I also love Love Music 1/2/3 and Penitence…. There are just sooooo many fire tracks……

Great reaction Jay, another Ren track you should check out is "Girls".
The last line Ren sang was about Joe’s suicide. The bridge they filmed on was where Joe jumped from.
It was not the bridge his mate jumped from
@@jamesmjadzelics1080 sorry. I had just recently read from someone that it was. Pardon my mistake.
