White Sands National Monument is located in southern New Mexico. This unique national unit preserves a large portion of the wave-like dunes of gypsum sand that have engulfed 275 square miles of desert, the largest gypsum dunefield in the world. Check us out as we do some dune sledding and hike the Alkali Flat Trail.

    Great video as usual.
Also, for anyone who plans on visiting, make sure you stay until sunset if you're able. It quite literally is one of the most beautiful places to watch a sunset on the planet. Funny enough, what makes it so beautiful is that it really does feel like you are on another planet because of the dunes and the surrounding mountains. Just breathtaking.

Randy, I have been here! Great to see Julie and Shane enjoying this with you. I visited Alamogordo, New Mexico in October 1992. I was surprised to see people barefoot on the white sand dunes as the air temperature was well above normal. I leaned over and touched the sand with my hand, and discovered it was cool to the touch as pure white sand absorbs no heat from the sun. Then I abandoned in my shoes in the car to enjoy the cool and soft comfort of this gypsum wonderland. A very interesting place, so glad this is being preserved. THANKS FOR YOUR VIDEO, . . . Mike

Our family had an absolute blast at this park during our recent trip to NM/TX. I had pretty high hopes for this one and it did not disappoint. Incredibly beautiful and such a surreal environment.
We spent a full day here hiking the majority trails and sledding which the boys just loved. We grilled steaks for dinner at one of the picnic areas and then enjoyed a great sunset. All around just a great day. I attempted Alkali Flat but ended up turning back after about 1.5 miles. The trail was kicking my butt and that mid-day sun (even in late March) was wearing me down as well. I know walking in sand is arduous but I couldn’t t believe how little headway I was making. I wanted to do the backcountry camping but that was closed during our visit. Just something to look forward to on a return visit. Loved this park!

The sand sledding shots came up really well! Never been to this park before but need to check it out. That hike you did remember hearing a story about a kid who was hiking with both his parents. Unfortunately they got lost and ran out of water. Only the kid survived. That place and that hike is no joke! Awesome video brother thanks for sharing.

Wow, what a sad story! People often seem to underestimate the dangers in the wilderness. Dehydration sets in quickly and getting lost if you are not careful is always a real and present danger. Thankfully the National Park trails are marked well and with a little common sense you can be safe. Have a great weekend!

Just hit White Sands this past December, two weeks before it became our newest National Park!! We did the Alkali Flats trail also, on a TX/NM tour of Big Bend, Carlsbad, Guadalupe and White Sands. Big Bend was awesome, Guadalupe Peak was intense, Carlsbad was just jaw-dropping but White Sands wound up being our favorite spot, thanks to how surreal it was. Absolutely epic, and you're right - everyone should see White Sands at some point in their travels. Too unique to miss!! :)

This place is still on my bucket list too! We will be in New Mexico in a month - but it will be too hot to hike there with our two little ones right? Should I wait for the next trip and more pleasant weather? You had so much fun, I loved it! But the hike was quite long, I can imagine that heat. You are generous by giving your sled to the kids, and the throw, wow! Glad you mentioned our Texas places as your favorite parts of your trip :) Thanks for showing us another beautiful place. What a cool place. I was here at the end of this past December. Pulled up to the shack and the ranger said "Welcome to White Sands National PARK." I said, huh, I thought this was a national monument? He said yep, we became a national park a week ago. I thought, sweet, I got an extra national park out of the trip that I wasn't even expecting. :)
