Indrayani Exp. - Bombay V.T. to Lonavala (July 1995)

  • In order to maximize our time at Khandala, my wife and I decided to take the first Southbound train out of Bombay VT. It turned out to be the Indrayani Exp. at an unearthly hour of 5.45 am. Our coach was deceptively empty at VT but got filled up at Dadar. And at Kalyan, it was packed like crazy. Still, I managed to find my way to the door at Karjat and enjoy the Ghats from there on.
This video is a treat for DC lovers since it portrays a journey in pure DC territory. Be sure to enjoy the look and feel of CR Bombay in the mid-90s including DC locos and DC EMUs. Highlights include:
Departures from Bombay VT, Dadar, Kalyan, Karjat
Encounter with double-decker Sinhagad Exp. and WCM5-hauled Deccan Queen
    The Bhor Ghats in monsoon.

Sir, u brought back my childhood memories
1 - red coaches of those time
2 - Deccan queen & it's specific Loco of that time
3 - WCM, I use to call tht loco scooby doo (as i was kid, didnt know loco had names, on basis of appearance I use to call) and WCG
4 - DC locals having express type windows (without safety grill)
5 - didnt know Sinhagad was double decker that time
6 - Kalyan station at that time

Yes, they changed Sinhagad to plain coaches in the late 90s, I think. I do have video of DQ skipping Kalyan when I traveled on it in July 2017, so it is from inside the train.

Dear sir, I always used to think that I being railfan is quite weird. Here on youtube, I find I am not alone but lots of people are fond of railways. Among them, you are a true father of this community. Thanks for posting this video. I was just 4 years old then and never been to mumbai yet. Thanks d
For showing mumbai of that times and classic era of Mumbai railway!

Most of us used to think the same way before we discovered each other, thanks to the Internet. For the first 23 years of my life, I used to think that I was the only IR fan in this world. Imagine my surprise when I found out that there were others like me 🙂🙂.

What a video sir? A gem indeed for all and very special for me as I used to take this train and also DQ and DE from Poona to Bombay during this period when I was in Poona for 3 months to do audits. I used to see and wonder at this British Electric Company made DC loco with a prominent nameplate in the bogie of Vulcan Foundry Works, England. The loco pilots used to allow me to come inside and it was an experience to climb just once and you have shown all controls and operation in a video as well. WCAM 1 is on display at Chennai Rail Museum and they allowed till recently to see the cab and controls. A special thanks to you,the father of RFans in India.

I was a student in Pune's Bharathi Vidyapeeth from 1988-92. I used to travel often on this train mostly on Monday mornings to get back to college in time. Used to get down at Shivajinagar and catch a rick to the college. What a prestigious train Indrayani exptess was at one time. Very fast and always on time. Even the return from Pune to Mumbai was fun. Would leave in the evening by 6.30 pm if i remember correctly and reach Dadar by 9.30 pm sharp in three hours flat skipping Karjat, Kalyan. Sometimes, it would halt for a couple of seconds at Vithalwadi station before Kalyan and i would jump off in time so that i could catch the local train and go to my home in Mulund. Great memories. Thanks so much for sharing.

This April Fool moment at 14:38 used to happen a lot during the 90s. Randomly parked goods rakes on tracks without a Loco at their leading edge. Used to look like headless chickens. The memories that this video brought back. Watching this at 3 AM took me back to the days. Couldn't help but shed a tear to the lost times. This is a gem.

Well well sir first up of all big thank you for coming up with this gem which you recorded way way back. Creating videos in 1995 !! Well you were indeed ahead of your time sir. Now as a mumbaikar living in mumbai since 30 years i can say this is the glorious past of mumbai, before this city was hijacked by people from other city/states who came in numbers and ruined this beautiful city. Im sure many people here will lambast me for my statement but thats surely not going to change my words. Look at that lush greenery before train enter parsik tunnel..all that mountainous slopes are not occupied by illegal slums. Thats a real agony for mumbaikar like me who has seen his beloved city turning into slum hub over the period of last 20-30 years. Hats off.

Awesome. I am curious to know what equipment you used, given that in '95, even camcorders were not that popular, and only a proper video camera like a Panasonic could produce this.
