I tried to find a company to clean my a/c here in NYC, they wanted to charge me $300; almost as much as the a/c costs. So I found your video and did it myself. It's so clean and the weird smell that was coming out of it is gone now. All for less than $20 for the cost of the cleaning solution. Thank you!

@Alejandro Guerrero it's true. I just had a company try to charge me 320$ and then when i said that was expensive he told me that I'm only saying it because he was Jewish and when i responded with "how the fuck did i know that?" He said the tone in my voice and hanged up the phone. How are these business surviving?

@@demonicentity4u481 they are only around because a lot of people are dumbasses that are too lazy to take the time to learn how to fix or do something them selves. I found a perfectly good pressure on the road and the person throwing it away was outside so I asked him what's the matter and he said the only problem was one prong on the plug broke off. So of course I grabbed it and took it home and 2 dollars for a plug and 20 bucks for some nozls later we now have a perfectly good pressure washer. Its like a 140$ electric one. I believe by green works

Our living room window unit had been struggling to cool the house during the day.
I figured it might have been the scorching Texas heat affecting it's performance.
Then it started cooling poorly at night as well.
That's when I knew something had to be wrong.
AC repairmen tend to commit highway robbery in hot places, because they can.
In a last ditch effort to save money, I did a search and spotted your video.
My husband and I followed your instructions last night.
Our AC is running like new, fan is blowing strong, living room got cooled within minutes !

Great Video, Thanks.. One thing you might do though is to when your spraying the Cleaner on the Insides of the Back Coils it would help to turn the AC up on it's backside so that the cleaner flows through the coils and out of them easier.. Also when you do the final Spray down, spraying the Outside Part (Back) of the AC to at that time also turn the AC so the Outside coils are facing the ground, which will help everything come out easier...

good video, i dont like modern units due to unreliability and lack of serviceability, the modern ones last maybe 10 years if lucky... normally like 5, i am still using a 1978 kenmore, a 1990 fedders and a 1987 hotpoint. 2 out of 3 of them have motors that you can oil the bearings (not sealed) and you can ad refrigerant easily... also all 3 of them have metal air ducts insulated with fiberglass and not Styrofoam. one common misconception about the old units is that they take a lot more power which is simply not true... there was no such thing as energy start at the time but the old units take about the same amount of power for the BTU rating, so if there were an energy star they would qualify. when this one dies look on craigslist and find something from the 90s or before, it may not have a digital thermostat or a remote, but it will work better, last longer and be easier to maintain.

Thank you for this video. My AC unit was making humming/clanky/weird motor noise (still does) and I read that it is due to the motor being dirty. Unfortunately I can't remove the whole thing out because the cord have been chalked in place so that the cord can use the outside outlet. If I remove the whole thing, I might as well buy a new AC unit (due to the work that is put to remove the unit to do this in the first place), which is what I want to avoid. I did do a hand cleanse and used a vacuum to remove debris and I notice it makes less noises than before. Saved me $250-$320, so thank you again. It was very kind of you to show us how you do a thorough AC unit cleanse. 😎👍

I have three window A/C units I've collected over the years; some were purchased, some donated. Over the years each one of them has been removed from the window and placed on the lowered tailgate of my pick-up for disassembly and clean-up. Instead of store-bought expensive A/C cleaner I went with vinegar with a little bit of Dawn and baking soda. Spray down everything that's dirty, wipe down what you can (Q-tips are handy for those tiny, hard-to-reach areas) making sure to get all the black, brown and green spots...that's mold. That's what stinks. In Florida I let it set for about an hour to dry. Back in the window, back on high until it expires then off to Walmart for another.

be careful with the Evaporator Fins, i learned that the hard way. the pressure on my hose was too strong it bent the fins. causing the Evaporator Fins to not take in air properly and FROZE the coils.

    • @MrJustDIY

Yes it can so I try to spray straight at them so it's less of a chance of bending them up.

You did mention to unplug it but you should remove it from window also ! lol I cleaned mine like you did 3 years ago and it needs it again before the weather gets too hot.Once it turns on for the summer it never goes off here in South Texas. It gets really nasty after a few years .Seem the dirt builds up even with cleaning the filter monthly. It pays to tear it down and clean every few years rather than keep buying new ones. Thanks for the video .

WE needed to do the quick simple version of this, as it's 100 degrees and we couldnt go whole hog with the hose and the dry time. We pried the front off, vacuumed out the bugs and dust with the brush attachment, and went after the coil with some soap water and a brush. After the season, we'll pull the units and try the hose method. We'll need some plywood to cover the holes, 2 of our 3 units are right through the wall. like you say in the video, they pretty much quit working when they are filthy, as we brought a free one back with some good old elbow grease several years back. Thanks Mr DIY for the great video!!
