Philip you really are a good egg! Melinda I am glad to see you have such a charming and supportive man by your side. It is touching the way you try and bond over vinyl records even if the enthusiasm is a little one-sided! Melinda please keep dragging him back onto the channel every few months, it makes for great viewing. Best wishes to you both from London!

It is true that LPs have become very expensive. Not too long ago, I was at Rough Trade NYC to pick up an order for an album by Senyawa, an Indonesian experimental band who literally sound like no one else. Going through the racks, I found that much of their stock was priced at $27, some of it higher. It's getting rough out there.
That said, if your hobby isn't negatively impacting your ability to meet your needs, what's the harm? Congratulations to you on having a spouse who understands and supports your love of music and collecting. It's not a crime against humanity, so people need to lighten up about it and address issues that impact our every day lives rather what or how much you buy.

@@MelindaMurphygood lord. it’s a free country…so if people want to listen to this tripe - a woman complaining that life isn’t perfect- that’s there business. But most people have bigger problems than a friend telling them they don’t like record collecting. example? My five year old child died of brain cancer. imagine what it feels like to watch your child die of cancer. That is a problem.. a real problem. how about you and your husband try putting your lives in the context. My hubby has always been supportive of my vinyl collecting, but he really does not care for the "hunting" aspect of the hobby. I think the dust/smells from flea markets/antique stores get to him so he would rather just set in the car.

Hi Malinda and Philip, as always a fun video..
One of the questions you asked your husband was about what you might need to upgrade your audio system and he mentioned a new phono preamp.. I’ve been an audiophile for more than forty plus years.. While every piece of gear in your system is very important, a new phono stage could make your system really sing. Such a great episode. Philip adds to the fact that you are real people with real lives and that increases my enjoyment of your channel. On the future of vinyl, it will drop off drastically with the passing of the generation that grew up with only vinyl, B.C. ...Before Cds. Plus the drop off will impact everything in the vinyl chain, from the production and manufacture of a record to when you listen to it in your home, 1000's of people. Think of 78's when they were fazed out for 331/3, very few people are around that collect them, let alone the equipment needed to play them. Thank you so much for your channel.🎵

On the vinyl trend..... there's so many dynamics to to it. My son, whonis about to be 16 loves discovering music. He's gone from loving Elvis and 50s rock to the 60s, the Beatles, Stones, Dylan, etc ..., but also discovering the Velvet Underground and 13th Floor Elevators and psych/garage bands of the 60s. He loves the Grateful Dead, the Sex Pistols, and is now moving into the 80s punk bands. He has a discovery mentality, but also a collector mentality.
Me.... I'm a dollar bin diver who's looking for great jazz and artists I've never heard of who made great albums. There's a lot of nuances to vinyl "collecting" that offers something for everyone.

To peer into the mind of a record collector one need look no further than the great Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. He lost an invaluable 3000 record jazz collection to a devastating house fire, a collection that took 40 years to amass. The quote that always stuck with me: "My record collection was probably the single most important thing that was destroyed." He had a lifetime of valuables in that house yet it was the loss of his vinyl that tore him up the most. To this day he says his greatest joy is when fans give him rare vinyl to help replace what was lost. Melinda shares Kareem's emotional connection to vinyl, it's something all collectors share. Phil has some great observations but I can tell what's most important is anything that makes his wife happy. Ignore those who don't understand, always nurture your passions.

    • @MelindaMurphy

Kareem’s loss was indeed a true shame. Those of us who’ve collected for years don’t worry too much about thieves-there would be just too much for them to haul off. Fire is a different story and that is a very scary word!
I invested in a fire safe several years back and it provides some nice peace of mind for LP’s, 45’s, and EP’s that would be very difficult to replace.

Stock of cds was very very limited, they used to import hard to get stuff...maybe how it's going to be very near future, hold in your hand music, will be near unobtainable due to all of these mod 😀 cons.l can't think of anything worse not knowing what the cover of an album, cd can show you, composer's, pictures, stories track list etc instead of programming music to your ears. Unless someone under 35 has studied music from 60s 70s 80s, there would be very little they could tell you about certain bands, solo acts, unless they were obsessed with them.

TY for the Updated Video, I was wondering if you heard of the new Upcoming Beatles Single, due out this coming September? I think there is a planned new LP with the New single included. It was also mentioned, there will be a New ReMastering of both the Red & Blue Albums (180gm)TBA soon. I've been a Vinyl Collector for 10 yrs now, How do you feel about the New Beatles Single and does the remastering Red&Blue Albums entice you to re-Buy them, if you already have the original versions?

I am looking forward to the new Beatles single although it isn't going to be a favorite for me. I really don't need anymore blue and red albums so that seems like a waste for me personally. Having said that, a new Beatles release is always a good thing. Thank you and take care.

Most of my vinyl collection was purchased back in the 70's and 80's when I was growing up, a collection close to 600, all of which I still have. In the mid to late 80's, I switched to buying compact discs. Since the vinyl resurgence and discovering Discogs, I'm slowly just filling in the gaps in my old collection, stuff that was never reissued on CD and I had wanted, but was no longer available or I didn't have the money to buy back in the day. Finally got a copy of the all talking "Having Fun with Elvis on Stage" album recently, which has been out of print for ages, and wasn't in the big 60-CD Elvis "The Album Collection" box set either. Always enjoy your videos, and you should talk your husband into appearing more often also!

Hello Melinda. My name is Sean and I am a subscriber of your channel - but first time commentor - who has been avidly watching your videos for over 6 months (and am still doing some catching up!). I am from Ipswich, Queensland, Australia and having been collecting vinyl for over 30 years. I just wanted to say how much I enjoy watching your videos. You come across as the most genuine person and passionate collector, and I really appreciate these qualities that keep me coming back.
Primarily, I collect funk and jazz type records (and all around and in-between), but also have an eclectic tast too (not unlike yourself), so I also can relate to and dig this aspect of your content as well, even where some tastes and preferences do differ. Although we have some access to good stuff domestically and can access international on-line scouring, vinyl collecting in Australia can get very expensive due to lack of availability of the sorts of things I am into, epsecially due to sky-rocketing postage costs, exorbitant prices for US 'imports', and just general scarcity plights! Digging up a bargain can, ultimately, still be found. However, nowadays it takes a lot more patience, time-investing and some plain old good fortune! Interestingly, I get a kick out of seeing others, like yourself, still being able to source great stuff, albeit with a little tinge of envy for you US folk who seem to still have greater availability of the best stuff that was produced there and with more reasonalbe domestic shipping rates to ease the conscience (well, that's what I figure would be the case out of context).
My apologies for the length of the comment but I just wanted to finally say "hello", "thankyou" and "keep up the 'cool' work!" Furthermore, I just also wanted to let you know that you have recently inspired me to make a rare 'blind' purchase (via order from the States) of a recent reissue of The Zombies 'Odessey and Oracle' (for obvious reasons). Like yourself, I have learned through experience to not really do that much now and, subseuqently, rarely make blind purchases anymore. I do like some 60's UK psyche-pop rock stuff and couldn't resist your on-going enthusiastic evaluation of the LP (and it being your #1), so I'm sure it will be great (even though I know it most likely won't sound as great as your original pressing!). Looking forward to that very much. No worries - no pressure - my choice in the end.
    Cheers and take care! Bye-bye!
P.S. Oh, and your and your husband's roles in this hobby/obsession and experiences are a bit too much like that of my wife's and mine, just in gender reversal (if that makes sense) which makes smile!

I would like to add as something you might not have in your collection, I recently listened to a video of Jacqueline Du Pre in the Dvorak Cello Concerto. You need to see this. If I was married to a music person like you Melissa we would have a very large room for the music and the stereo. People such as family and friends could come over and not see the equipment and the collection. I am currently working on that now, all my music will be stored in my bedroom including the stereo. The only thing in the living room would be is two tower speakers and two bookshelf speakers mounted up high and angled to the sweet spot for listening. and I am still considering if the center channel speaker and subwoofer goes in the bedroom or living room. I see you have a very nice husband and he let's you enjoy your hobby and has your back when someone is out of line. I might say something to this person a lot more blunt like "when are you going to not drink too much and say stupid things?". Yeah no friends coming over any time soon.
