Antonio Lauro (1917-1986) was a Venezuelan musician, considered to be one of the foremost South American composers for the guitar in the 20th century. In 1951-2, the military junta of General Marcos Perez Jimenez imprisoned Lauro for his principled belief in democracy. Lauro later shrugged off the experience, telling his friends that prison was a normal part of life for the Venezuelan man of his generation. Lauro wrote his Suite Venezolana, consisting of Registro (Preludio), Danza Negra, Cancion, and Vals during his imprisonment. The curiously named first movement, Registro, refers to the sort of improvising (registrar) a musician might do to warm up his hands or to explore a new or unfamiliar instrument. The Danza Negra is an Afro-Venezuelan dance which quotes a Venezuelan folksong San Pedro; another popular tune, La Tumba, is quoted in both of the last two movements.

Lauro is a brilliant representaiuve of an older Venezuelan middle class, highly cultured, elegant. The one that lived from the end of the XIX century to about the 1980's and, then, as the dinosaurs of the Cretaceous suddenly dissapeared

Great recital video, Stephen, Bravo! I've been playing the whole 'Suite Venezolano' for actually over 12 years now, amazing suite, love all of Lauro's pieces, I always thought, 'Man, why doesn't somebody post this on UA-cam? You beat me to it. Again, fine job, what a pleasure it is to see someone else play this. I always wanted to record my rendition of this, (it's on the bucket list), if/when I ever do, I'd like you to share it with you. You've re-inspired me to try, thanks!

Just great! He makes it look so easy too. I thought it was funny seeing Radiohead listed in the tags. :-)

Hi Freddythemonk! I'm studying this piece now, I'm wondering if you would share your pdf of the score edited by Mr. Lauro :) I can trade the Assad arrangement of Frevo for 2 guitars, if you like.

Where did you find the sheet music to this? Second movement sounds a little different from the version I have (score I found on the internet for free) but I cant find the published version anywhere.

Thanks for listening. I got it from my campus library back in 2007. It's the edition revised by Alirio Diaz. Beware of low quality scans from the internet. It may be out of print now, but I'm sure you can find it at a library somewhere. Try WorldCat! :-)
