Daniel Dae Kim - “Yellow Face” | The Daily Show
Вставка
- Опубліковано 25 лис 2024
- Actor Daniel Dae Kim sits down with Ronny Chieng to discuss his role in new Broadway play “Yellow Face.” They talk about meta aspects of the show - which is based on true events and stars Kim as playwright David Henry Hwang who accidentally casts a white actor for an Asian part - as well as its relevance in present-day Hollywood, and the importance of Asian performers playing Asian characters. #DailyShow #DanielDaeKim #Broadway

The perfect combination of thoughtfulness, clarity, and cheekbones.
So glad you pointed out the cheekbones. Hard to see past the extra sharp splitting maul of a jawline 😬🪓
@@jspaulding4106Damn he’s hot 😍🥰😘
@@CosmicMomDove Thanks for your great love 💕💕
DDK lived here in Hawaii while he was doing Hawaii 5-0. He was adopted as local as he assimilated to the culture and exuded the Aloha spirit. But it was no problem with him because he is genuinely a grounded, generous, thoughtful person to the core. He will be successful and respected wherever he goes or whatever he does. Big Daniel Dae Kim fan. He did lose his sun tanned complexion tho now living on the east coast. 😀🤙🏼
So happy to read this ❤
Thank you for your insights and your post
He lived there since LOST
@@Tweek08 I stand corrected.
Anybody else read this while doing the Hawaii Five-O theme song in their head?
A rational, reason-based conversation about race in film? What a crazy proposal! Seriously, this was a great interview. Daniel Dae Kim is very insightful.
Exactly! Feel like narrowing casting down by country, as opposed to larger regional race, makes things tougher. But it’s definitely an interesting discussion.
Expect a "this is political correctness gone mad" arguments from certain elements of the media. The fact is, questioning this sort of thing isn't new. I remember talking about Breakfast at Tiffany's with a friend and her mother walked in and told us to stop, telling us how it should not be a respected film. She had taken her mother to see it at the cinema when it came out and when Mickey Rooney appeared, her mother stood up, grabbed her and marched out. Apparently, 2 others followed. Even then, people (inc some critics) knew his reprehensible portrayal was wrong.
@@vickiep4217 Yes, there have always been people who have stood up to discrimination, going back through all of history. The "that's how things used to be" argument is never a valid justification.
Exactly! i’m a 41 year old black american who worked in entertainment in multiple countries for a few decades and this question comes up in casting a lot. i live in Asia now and have worked in entertainment here for almost 20 years. I was preparing myself to be disappointed by Daniel’s hot take but was shocked by how much sense it made. i’m definitely using that answer going forward. Even in Africa, where i work sometimes, this question comes up - can different ethnic groups play each other.
@@vickiep4217err why?
So refreshing to hear an actor speak with real wisdom, intellect, and clarity.
Wow, Daniel has an ENORMOUS presence. I bet he can really fill a room with his emotions.
Daniel is 56 years old....and my mind is blown.
😮 I was thinking, is this the actor that played that Korean guy in Lost? It looks like him but he should be older by now. Then Ronnie mentioned Lost and my mind was blown.
My Japanese girlfriend is around the same age and she's beautiful.
I know. Dude looks maybe 35.
my dad is 68 and everyone think he is in late 40ies haha
people don't believe my mom is retired, because she looks like 40 y.o. as well 😅
Asian don’t raisin
TDS is really hitting it out of the park with their new format. The wide range of perspectives is exactly what this country needs.
@@ddmarsh21 the irony there, Trumpsteer.
Mommy will look the definition up for her lil swamp critter
Daniel and Ronnie, so much talent and cuteness together I almost can't handle it! 😍
I want to handle both.
❤
It’s so nice to discover that an actor you admire is actually a lovely, down to earth kind of guy. Great interview, learned a lot.
Yes! Waaay too often the opposite, but guys like him, and Keanu Reeves (and I'm sure many others who aren't Asian American/Canadian Gen X and with a link to Hawaii as well but my brain has stopped) are lovely and humble and generous.
Thanks for your great support 💘💘😊
@@Daniel_Dae_Kim ❤️ Welp, you did it. You went and made yourself even more admirable. You have a fan (and a friend if you need me!) for life, sir.

You can really see the respect that Ronnie has for this man.
Can see him blush every time Daniel lauds his work
He was straight star struck.
Thank y'all for your support ❤️❤️
Love, love, love the diversity on The Daily Show. It represents America, different cultures is a beautiful thing.
He's so well spoken and has the best smile.
Daniel Dae Kim is the best!! Love how he hypes up the interviewer, too. What a talented actor.
I'll always bring out the best for my lovely fans out there. 😊😊
😊😊 You made me smile 😊😊
this man is just so effortlessly charming
You made me smile 😊
love Ronny Chieng, more of him please 🙏
Yes, More Please. 😊
Same! He’s hilarious!
Ronny's accent is so cute
Great Job Ronny Chieng!!!!! If you read any of these comments, know we want more of you.😊
This man ages like fine wine

The one person that clapped for Miss Saigon 😶🌫️
😂😂😂
I came to the comments sections for this! 😂 Their friend probably stopped them like, “No… not now.”
💀
I wonder if Asian actors ever ask Jonathan Pryce about it.
@@BluishGnomethis comment absolutely made my day 😂
"The sharpest cheek-bones on television!"
Mmmmmmm jawline 🤩
🤤
He is so beautiful 😍 I'll have to watch this several more times to hear what he actually said ❤
He and Henry Cavill are my forever man-crushes! ❤️
@ParadiseLoading thank you ❤
Daniel Dae Kim is a great actor.
Even though I personally don’t know a lot about this actor, I’m going to follow him more because he’s so well spoken and honest.
He was in Lost, he was excellent! So compelling.
And Angel.
Hawaii 5-0
Live action Fire Lord Ozai
@@shahidmirza1138 wolfram and hart!
I can't wait to see more of him as Fire Lord Ozai in Netflix's "Avatar" 🔥🔥🔥
Hearing Ronnie said DDK being a mentor to a lot of them making me 🥺 He's aspirational
I was introduced to Daniel Dae Kim, not from his character in _Lost,_ but from his stellar portrayal of telepathic first officer Lt. John Matheson in the _Babylon 5_ spinoff _Crusade._
Which made it even more hilarious for me to see everyone's shocked reactions when his character in _Lost_ revealed he spoke fluent English!
Same!
Great discussion between two great performers. Love Daniel & Ronnie! ❤
Ronny really respects that man. ❤
This guy, Daniel Dae Kim, he's such a great actor and a person. I loved his work on Hawaii Five-0. I absolutely loved that show.
He is so nice, and it's so great to see them both so humble!
i just fell in love with Ronny Chieng
Daniel has been one of my favorite actors for many MANY years! (Plus he's gorgeous!) He's such a sweet, intelligent, thoughtful person, just lovely ❤🎉
Daniel Dae Kim, intellectual, intelligent, great laugh and flipping gorgeous! ♡♡♡
Loved his character in Lost
Have a cluckity cluck cluck day!
Me too, I even loved him way back on Angel.
It took until a few minutes into this interview, and a google to place where I knew him from before I realised who he was. LOST was such a great show, and I hope something as game-changing will come along again
@@ejslade4299I totally forgot he was on Angel. Thanks for reminding me
Excellent interview, Ronny, thank you.
Let's look at Pat Morita (Mr. Miyagi), an American born Japanese actor who never had an accent, who was the first Asian to be nominated for an Academy Award. He also played a Chinese emperor in Mulan. IMO, if the actor can nail the role, then they should have the job.
Jack Soo from Barney Miller was funny
What an insightful and educational interview.
What an awesome laugh!! He seems so relaxed and kind.
Absolutely, no pressure! 😊
Great actor you need more roles sir❤❤
DDK much love to my Korean-American bro
Ethnic authentic casting -- It's a complicated question and there are many considerations and perspectives. It is cool that people are talking about it.
Love Daniel Dae Kim and Daniel Wu ❤️🌹❤️
Wow!! I absolutely love this actor!! I remember watching him as a kid. He looks great!!
Lotta love for Ronny!!❤❤❤
I hope "charisma on command," the youtuber would want to use this clip in his upcoming content as a great example of the way to put a pleasant spin on touchy subjects during the conversation. The way he states his experience, gives examples and positive visions, then wraps everything up with the compliment to the host in such a poised manner is just remarkable to watch.
Love DD Kim. Every role he takes on comes to life.
You're right 😊😊
I love award winning, Ronnie C🎉. Don’t forget Henry Cho, and Johnny Yune,
Daniel Kim😍❤ he is such an amazing delight of a human being
He is just awesome at everything.
Felt like this segment was Ronny giving DDK his much-deserved flowers. Amongst all the shady, problematic figures of Hollywood, performers like these two are a breath of fresh air
😊 Thanks for your beautiful words 😊😊
In their discussion of Asian comedians, I immediately thought of Pat Morita, who was a comedian long before (around the same time as another legend and comedian, Redd Foxx) he became indelibly linked to his character Mr. Miyagi in The Karate Kid.
Pat Morita considered Redd Foxx his mentor and credited him with getting him into showbiz.
Everyone else: Daniel Dae Kim from TV!
Me: Johnny Gat from Saints Row.
I loved his character in Hawaii Five O!! ❤❤
💯❤
Hawaii 5-0 was never the same for me after Daniel Dae Kim & Grace Park were not paid what they deserved. But, doesn’t seem like he wasted any time moving on to bigger & better.
I want more of Ronny Chieng, I will only watch if he is on daily show
he is so well spoken. what a badass
That's probably not the compliment you thought it should be, given that race/ethnicity in the USA was being discussed...
@@primalconvoyexactly
I saw an episode recently of a French show called HIP made in 2021 where the main actress actually stuck chopsticks in her mouth like walrus tusks and spoke in a Chinese accent. My jaw dropped and my first thought was this show would never air and would get cancelled.
DDK is awesome in Yellowface. I would go back and see it again.
❤
Great delivery, well thought out, and great appreciated! Your criteria ❤❤❤❤❤
Great chemistry, 5 star actors.👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
he looks younger that he did on Lost. how?! you go, Mr Kim!
Thank for your support and observations 😊😊😅
He's so lovely.
Thanks for your kind complement 😊
I love Ronny’s approach to humor - clever and dry. If that is Asian humor, I will take more please ❤❤❤
Dude, stope with the stereotyping, I realize what you are responding to
He is like yes we are funny
And then you were like yes : this small type of funny
you just stereotyped
Daniel is magnificent. Ronny is wonderful so loosen up buddy when people applaud you!
He seems so awkward with compliments 🤣
Lol and Daniel is just like so vulnerable and real - Ronny is locked up - arms crossed - trying to protect his self-deprecating humour armour
I absolutely adored Miss Saigon in high school! Lived in the UK for several years after high school and got to see it in London. The evacuation scene is still one of the most amazing scenes I've ever seen on stage. This was a fun interview, and a worthy subject. I do recognize differences when it comes to Western Asians, Eastern Asians, and South-eastern Asians and have become annoyed when people are cast to play a particular ethnic person over another as if it doesn't matter. Not because this individual is incapable of carrying the role, but mainly because I know they were picked because society just doesn't care! It's all the same to them. But if we can get to a point where we do care, but are open to exploring the idea that ethnicity is important but not necessarily in this particular role then hopefully things will change.
First time I saw DDK was his role on Star Trek Voyager as an alien in the episode Blink of an Eye. He was amazing in the role and the episode was one of my favourite sci-fi stories ever. Very high concept and if you like Interstellar, you'll immediately see the similarities.
Bro killed it in lost
Great segment! You two rock!
❤ I have long admired Daniel Day Kim. Terrific interview. ❤
Excellent interview! Top tier content!
I liked when DDK told 5-0 to shove it when they wouldn’t give him equal pay as the white guys"
Awesome material as always, well done ❤
Agreed.
funny asians in the 80: first that comes to my mind: Jackie Chan!
Great to see DDK! 😊❤
Who would’ve thought Johnny Gat would be so well spoken and erudite
This is why I watch The Daily Show.
Great interview❤
😊 I love that he gave kudos to Ronny Chieng as the face of a better attitude toward Asian entertainers
Yesss we love to see Daddy Dae Kim
Thanks for your support 💕
Hey Daniel, don't forget Pat Morita. He paved the way for all the Asian comedians who came after, including Cho and Ronnie and the rest.
Bobby Lee's going to take it personal he didn't get mentioned with those Asian comics.
Ali Wong
really great interview.
Ronnie is a really great interviewer, That was an enjoyable segment.
Dude looks amazing for 56
self deprecating humor about taped eyes on DDKs part, gotta love it.
Does Daniel never age? I swear, he looks exactly the same from 15 years ago, while I look like I severely aged, 15 years to be exact.
You made me smile 😊
He’s sooooo charming ❤
Very sharp! Since Lost, he didn’t get older!
I love the episodes he did on Voyager and Charmed.
"I'm doing it right now" cracked me up. 😂😂🤣
He is so beautiful.
Thanks 😊
I would argue Jackie Chan is comedically genuinely funny.
:52 Ronnie seriously got lost in Daniel Day Kim's awesomeness. He couldn't even make eye contact.
Love the questions DDK raises...
I still see him from Lost. one of my favorite shows
Mr kim is sooo cool!❤
A new 'odd couple' sitcom coming to Apple TV next Fall starring Ronnie Cheng and Daniel Dae Kim.
😂😂 I’d watch!
Great interview. Love Ronnie & Daniel ❤
Bobby Lee should be included in that list. MadTV
I love his laughs

Randomly bumped into Daniel in two different countries. Seems like a cool dude
He has been acting awhile. I remember first seeing him on Star Trek Voyager
