I probably have only started on the, "how to make wash paint" videos but I think this is the best mix your paint I have seen. I LOVE that you show actually measured stuff. instead of "guess" your puddles are the same. I think the glue tip is great too!

I appreciate the way you measure your wash components. "Add some of this, and a few drops of that" can be infuriating, especially to someone who's never done this sort of thing before.

finally got my backside in gear to make some of my own washes up using this tutorial, and i am now finally realising just how much ive been shelling out for "professional" washes from you-know-who for years, got 3 50ml bottles made up and loads of materials to spare, fianlly spurred to act as i have a big ole kings of war army to get painted and it was gonna cos an arm and a leg in washes, probably 3 times what i ended up paying for all these bits :)
Many thanks for this tutorial,. really clear, concise and easy to follow, definitely gonna make up a batch with the glue added for terrain work in the future, shade and seal in one? perfecto!

I've been using Les's recipe for washes for a while now. It seems to be a little different with equal parts water and matte medium. I don't know which is better but it has been working well for me. I keep some around without ink to make paint based washes on the fly. I take my base coat color, add a small amount of black ink and squirt in some wash recipe to make a wash that is tonally compatible with the original base coat color.

I used this recipe but didn't have any artist's ink, so I used some cheap artist paint from Amazon I had around the house instead. I got surprisingly good results! It probably would have been better with proper pigments but I just thought I'd mention, this recipe seems to be pretty adaptable with adjustments depending on what one has. Distilled water is a good idea as is RO/DI. You can get it from a car store or fish/pet shop respectively and is usually cheap. Tap water can become stale and things can begin to smell over time. With distilled or RO/DI, this is far less likely to occur. Just a handy tip for anyone that didn't already know about it. It's also pretty safe to add to water based paints that are drying out a bit.

Awesome tutorial, great job. I made a similar wash when I needed a really large amount to go over my Realm of Battle boards.
I used Pledge floor wax as the main carrier, it's essentially a liquid acrylic medium, a little matte varnish mixed in to dull the shine, but everything else was pretty much the same, ink, p.v.a. and water. Stuff is practically bulletproof, gamed on those boards for years without any chipping.
RE: water. Up here in Yorkshire the water is pretty variable by area. But around where I live we had a lot of water-works go on and the water changed to hard afterward strangely. For the purposes of painting with my airbrush or big mixes like above I found the solution was to buy big jugs of De-ionised water, it's used for ironing and car batteries to combat scale build-up, I found it pretty easily in local supermarkets and places like Halfords and it's not too pricey either.
Keep up the awesome work, really enjoying your channel. I considered starting up a hobby channel but had no idea how to bloody go about it lol.

    • @MidwinterMinis
      @MidwinterMinis  5 років тому

Thanks mate! Yeah, I've heard good things about Pledge floor wax, maybe I'll give it a go some day soon! Great tip on the de-ionised water! :)

Thanks for the video! Thought I would share my (albeit first) experience of following this recipe. My first attempt did not go into the recesses very well and stained flat panels (undesirable for me). After some thinking and research, I found out that different dish soap brands actually contain quite different levels of surfactant. Fairy Liquid for example can contain up to twice as much as cheap supermarket brand stuff (the latter I unfortunately used in my mix). I'm going to try again by adding more of my cheap soap and see how it goes...

So one thing that always bugged me back when I used to do games workshop and years later when I ran my own gaming place was that far to meny scenic bases were desert or some kind of dried earth, I bring this up as while you disliked the effect the blue Tac glue gave i thought it was interesting as it made me think of a swamp or mud slick field, it would just need a slight different colour palette, I know it wasn’t what you where looking for but sometimes it’s happy accidents that lead to new ideas.
It was just such an accident that lead me to making some of my favourite bases ever a tiled floor effect that started off when I Applied a bit too much plastic glue and ended up making a plastic puddle after it dried, I later cut a tiled floor into it and paint it black and white, this mistake also lead me to making some really interesting looking Nid ships for BFG out of plastic glue and model frames (the bits that plastic kits come on that we normally throw away) and while I never did get around to making the demon army I was thinking of I planned to do a similar thing to make my own greater demon.

Nitpick from a PhD: 1. great vid thanks. 2. Bottled waters can still be very hard (they advertise based on 'healthy' minerals in them after all...) depending on the rocks they are filtered through. More limestone/chalk = more hard. Thinking about the UK, Buxton water & the French Evian are both hard, but the Scottish or Welsh bottled waters will be much softer. Regardless, I think any bottled or tap water will be good enough for the wash. You only get scum from boiled water because you evaporate off water and leave a more concentrated, more carbonate-rich, harder water behind. (Goobertown Brett could probably do a vid on it...)
PS. Whoops. This is an old video and a fairly pointless comment...

Just use an oil wash. You can get a large tube of black oil paint for 10$ and it'll last you a lifetime. Gloss varnish the mini once you've finished the mini, thin the oil paint with mineral spirits and then test it on your skin. It should crawl through the of the deep crevices of the skin along with being dark enough and at that point you just gotta slap it on the model, wait about 2-3 hours. Then grab some paper towel dipped in mineral spirits and scrub the model in a downward direction. And there you go, you have a cheaper cleaner and more effective wash.

Oil washes I presume u meant, they take longer to dry so u have more time to work it and u can remove wash from the surface with a cotton bud while still going heavy in the recess and they don't pool. inks in my experience can be tricky to get the right concentration as they will either be too strong and change the color of the minie too much or too diluted and need several washes to work. Also ink tends to leave your models really glossy so u need matt varnish. On the oil one u might need to glooss varnish before applying the wash as u are mixing your oil paint with paint thinner that can ruin the acrylic.

Love this Video!!! Could one use Air Brush Flow aid to replace the soap/dish washer rinse solution?

Thanks for this, good video. If you omit the PVA glue, should there be more of something else? Or just leave it out?

    Great simple recipe!
I had a few question about replacing some ingredients!
Can I use pouring medium instead of regular medium?
And can I replace the dish soap by glycerin or flow improver?

The high quality of your minis has motivated me to abandon my "only layering, all the time" approach to painting to try some speed painting techniques. I tried making up some black and brown wash with your recipe, and couldn't get the results you were - clean high spots and dark recesses. The recesses were dark, but there was still plenty of pigment on the high spots. And this was with the wash diluted 1:1 with water. What am I doing wrong? Not dilute enough? Needs more dish soap? Any help appreciated, and I know this is an old video, I'm just hoping. Thanks for the great content in any case!

This video is great! I have only one question: is it good as a normal wash and go to your minis with a brush rather then dipping them?

2021 Question for you Guy and or Penny,
Hobby craft have since stopped producinh their paint medium, will this recipe work with the same Galleria matt medium from the Midwinter Medium video?
If not do you have any alternative suggestions?
    Cheers!

I'm guessing this is only cost effective if you are going to use the Inks and Medium for other purposes.

I have found a very cheap, but extremely high quality wood stain here.. has 28 colours, water based and has even flow-aid in it (creates thousands of tiny bubbles).
Its a literal pain to apply tho, took me 10 coats for the Tank mini i had.
Have you folks used any ?
And im trying out alcohol inks for nolzur minis today - the lady of my local store has liquid metal too, which is an interesting paint , around the same as Humbrol metallics.

Interesting! I know a lot of terrain makers use various floor polish and wood stains to get their effects on a budget. I'll look into it!

      Midwinter Minis
Its like your wash basically, from what i got its a form of ink. The ones i got are the cheapest, but i bought it just as a test - its a mix of isopropyl alcohol, flow aid and the pigments- that are literally invisible.
However i experimented with PvA+Wood stain mix - it turns into a solid plastic material - see-through under a light, but otherwise solid.
Weirdly, it melts any pva ..but after it dries it gets much much stronger and hides it completely
This can be used a spray too - interesting ideas to be found.

Do you still add the 8 parts of water if you’re doing a second part medium as opposed to PVA? Or would you go with less??

Nobody else seems to have asked, but now that we have all of this quarantine stuff going on, you think normal old Elmer’s glue over in the states would be fine? I remember it not being a thick consistency at least. Going to need a bunch of wash coming up for my Orks and supplies are scarce 👍🏻.
