This is the best video I have seen on interactive notebooks (and I am on a binge right now). Thank you. You really broke it down SO well. Much appreciated!
I am a homeschooling mom who has always loved lapbooks. Seeing my kiddos are now middle school age, this seems to be a great "new way" to keep notes. Thank you for the wonderful ideas.
I'm starting high school teaching and I'm definitely going to be implementing this. It's a much improved version of the guided notes I've been given in Middle Schools
I have been wanting to create interactive notebooks for such a long time. I absolutely love what you do. I'm actually a foreign language teacher but I'm going to follow your process as much as possible for a Spanish teacher. Thanks so much for sharing.
@Y Vega Yes, I do! There are templates that are free at this link: busymissbeebe.com/inbsetuppages And I have new templates that are for sale in my TPT store: www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Interactive-Notebook-Templates-Bundle-8419257
Thank you for this. I've tried interactive notebook many times, but I think because I don't have a good step up for organizing that I give up halfway thru. This has been very helpful 🙂
I’m finally taking the plunge this year and am loving it already! Thank you for not just this video but all of yours! I’m excited to revamp my whole curriculum in my 15th year! Thank you again!
I agree this video and your playlist are very informative. I’ll be going into year 13 and this will be my first time using interactive journals. I teach 7th graders for ELA.
I love that you use the Growth Mindset instruction! I teach Honors Geometry use the same survey but don't have them include it in their notebook. So important work at the beginning of the year! Winning!
Hi! I have templates that I use: www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Interactive-Notebook-Foldable-Templates-5122368?st=d7f14082cf986e3b18bca9fd2a02d220
Great job, I appreciated that you showed and explained each step. I really like the idea of interactive notebooks. School is hard enough at my age but is now a world of difference from back in my day. Thank you.
New subbie! I've been teaching for 25 years. The last 15 years I've been a world language teacher. Last school year, I was re-assigned from high school to middle school level, and I had to reinvent how I taught. I discovered interactive notebooks, and was hooked. But I didn't know how to start the year off using them, which is what I want to do this year. Your video was the most clear, concise and easy to wrap my head around the what to do and how to do it! As a language teacher, there is a natural connection to how students learn math, which explains why I loved geometry when I was in high school! I am going to binge watch and use your videos to make the transfer from your set to how I would set up my notebook for my language class. Thank you for sharing this, you rock!, and I can't wait to see your next video!
Thank you so much for your feedback! I am always happy to hear if my videos helped someone. (Or if there is something I can improve or do differently.)
Brianne Beebe I just set up my teacher store on tpt...kind of...I'm stuck. Afraid if I don't use fonts, banners, and backgrounds correctly I'll get kicked off! Any suggestions? I'll look to see if you have a vid for that.
I don’t have a video about TPT. When it comes to fonts and images, make sure you’ve read the terms of use from the creators. Usually it’s fine to use them as long as you’re not distributing the fonts, images, etc as your own work. (In other words, since you’re using them to create your own products it’s fair and legal.) It’s a good idea to add in a terms of use page that copyrights your work and also gives credit to the creators of the fonts, images, etc that you used.
You've gained a sub! I have been wanting to make my grammar lessons more interactive, and feel less like "lectures". I really want my kids to be excited about the material we cover. I am going to implement this idea. Love it! Keep up the great work!
One question I have is regarding Thinking Classrooms. I have started implementing a Thinking Classroom structure in my middle and high school math classes, and students have moved away from writing down notes as rigidly as they had before. I think too often students are copying down the steps and then "mimicking" the steps they copied down, which shows me that students have learned how to mimic, but they don't actually have a deep understanding of the math concept (this is shown when students are given a problem that doesn't explicitly follow the steps from their notes, and they may have to think outside the box). Do you find that these notebook counteract mimicking? What does your lesson structure look like? Thanks!
Hi. I have a video on my lesson structure. But it’s the traditional math lesson structure. You can adapt your notes for your teaching style. I give my students guided notes since I teach geometry and there are so many diagrams.
I just finished my 1st year teaching and have decided to try out interactive notebooks for my Civics classes next year, I was skeptical because I know I would have to go hard or go home as far as organization and grading for them go but your video helped me so much and made so many lightbulbs go off in my head, thank you!
This is so helpful..... I am starting my first year of teaching with EBD students and this will definitely help them keep their notes together. It can also be done during my learning strategies class!!!!
When I was student teaching, my host teacher had students staple in their notes sheets. That year, we had some special staplers, but it usually works well. With middle kiddos, they need few and simple shapes to be able to cut quickly. I made the mistake of having them cut 3 maple leaves each for a project and it took over 20 minutes.
I love using Interactive Notebooks. In my content, having a good reference is so important for students to be able to apply their knowledge. Notebooks help keep students accountable for curating reference material. Once students are absent they know to get their notebooks up to date. Before notebooks students would just let whatever content they missed slip. I'm working on getting the TOC page and everything else up on my blog.
Do include warm-ups or QOD's in your notebook? If I did a warm-up everyday would I end up running out of room? Do you also include the worksheets for practice that you do in class?
Sort of. Students have the choice to use their notebooks for warm-ups or a separate sheet of paper. My students last year either used the margin in the notebook, a page at the back of their notebook, or the back of their homework. For our in-class practice, students may keep the papers in their pocket page, but most throw it away after I check it.
I wish I did. I didn't feel it was fair to force this whole way of teaching on someone else. I also did not feel comfortable with students sharing supplies or sitting at tables together. My school wasn't really clear with protocol at the beginning of the year - they were still figuring stuff out. I had to make a decision right away. I'm dying to go back to INBs next year.
I would love to have your growth vs. fixed mindset insert and have tried signing up on your website to receive by email, but have gotten nothing. Could you help me out?
Hi. Are you signing up with your personal email or school email? There have been a ton of issues lately with school emails blocking email and links that come from outside the district.
My geometry notes are on TpT. The set up pages are not, but they’re free to my email subscribers. briannebeebe.mykajabi.com/opt-in-e4858bef-4b1f-4c4e-9ba7-cf9c413043ec
I've done INBs for several years now, but I've learned some great new tips from you. I wish I was brave enough to use liquid glue with my seventh-graders!
I am thinking about using INBs in 7th and 8th grade and this video was beyond helpful!!! Where did you get the growth mindset survey? I want to start to incorporate that into my classroom. Thanks!!
The growth mindset survey came from mathequalslove.blogspot.com. Here is the link: mathequalslove.blogspot.com/2015/06/growth-and-fixed-mindset-quiz-foldable.html
What size is your composition book? It looks larger than the standard size. Great video by the way. I'm about to start my first year and I'm so glad I stumbled across your channel!
Thank you so much. It is a standard size composition book. (Perhaps it looks larger because of the camera angle.) I purchase notebooks at Target and Walmart over the summer. They sell them for $0.50 each.
Thank you. Well done and helpful. Did you create all the inlays (glue in papers/note sheets) for the notebook yourself? Or is there somewhere to get them? Patrick
Thank you for this video! I'm a high school Math teacher from the Philippines by the way. I hope you could share some teaching strategies you use in your Math class. :)
That is totally up to you as the teacher. My school has a culture where many students wouldn’t do this if it wasn’t for a grade, so I add it in as a quiz grade at the end of the quarter. I grade pretty leniently, and frame it as an “easy 100” (getting a 100 for something that they should be doing anyway). In the end it can help them out a little bit, but generally if a student fails their notebook, they were already failing anyway.
Absolutely! I have some students that elect to not do the notebook at all. (Some because they don’t want to put in the effort, but most because it’s just not for them.)
I made the template myself. I've thought about making it available for others to use, but it is so customized to my needs, I didn't think it would work out.
I've gotten a lot of good ideas from this video. Trust me, I've taken notes! What state do you teach in? I teach in Alabama. It's interesting to see different policies. For instance, my district will not let us grade their notebooks. I think it's very important, but hey...what can I say...I'm just a teacher who is in the line of duty every day. LOL
Hi! I teach in NY. My district is somewhat hands-off. They are just now creating a district-wide grading policy. It's great because we feel that we are trusted as professionals to make our decisions, but it can be frustrating when we do want more guidance on something. I'm so glad this video was helpful to you!

Awesome! I’m so glad this helped.
I wish I’d seen this a few years back. It makes soooooo much more sense like this
Thank you so much! Your video is very helpful. I can see how this easily can be adjusted for different disciplines too. Thanks!
Thank you so much for your feedback!

Still super helpful 4 years after you first posted this video 😃
Thank you! An update video is coming next month. It’s based on this blog post: www.busymissbeebe.com/getting-started-with-interactive-notebooks/
I like the TOC page. You could use that with any class. I’m working on certification in History 7-12 and have been interested in ISNs for a while.

HI there, Its four years and one pandemic later. Are you still using this notebook system (if that is, you are in person teaching)?
I wish I did. I didn't feel it was fair to force this whole way of teaching on someone else. I also did not feel comfortable with students sharing supplies or sitting at tables together. My school wasn't really clear with protocol at the beginning of the year - they were still figuring stuff out. I had to make a decision right away. I'm dying to go back to INBs next year.

hun can I just say that YOU ARE SO PRETTY💕🥺
Do you utilize foldables at all with your INB? Have you tried the left side/right side method?
Foldables yes. Left/right no. For the most part, my students usually prefer very simple fill in the blank notes.
Hi! Do you put assignments/worksheets in your notebooks as well? Also your TPT link in the video bio does not work!
We create pocket pages for each unit, and students can use those pockets to store anything that isn’t notes if they choose.
greetings from the uk if you wanted to make one from scratch on a subject with no printables book avalible would you use a simular format
Yes
I've done INBs for several years now, but I've learned some great new tips from you. I wish I was brave enough to use liquid glue with my seventh-graders!
I’m so glad I could help! Liquid glue takes some time to teach each year, but I just know they would go through the tape so much faster.
where can I find these hand outs
busymissbeebe.com/inbsetuppages
I am thinking about using INBs in 7th and 8th grade and this video was beyond helpful!!! Where did you get the growth mindset survey? I want to start to incorporate that into my classroom. Thanks!!
The growth mindset survey came from mathequalslove.blogspot.com.

Even though I'm in college majoring nursing. I find this helpful 💫🤘😎
That is awesome! Thank you for commenting.
Can you repost the link to the pages you used?
Here is the link: briannebeebe.mykajabi.com/opt-in-e4858bef-4b1f-4c4e-9ba7-cf9c413043ec
Do you know where I can get all these pages? The landing page to download the free templates doesn’t exist anymore.
So sorry about that! Here is the link you're looking for: www.busymissbeebe.com/inbsetuppages
Do you have an Algebra interactive notebook?
I don’t. I’ve been in geometry and haven’t been assigned algebra for over a decade.
What was the name of the tape you used? Thank you.
Ducklings
really great video
Do you have a copy of your INB rubric available?
Yes, I do. It is on my blog under the INB tab. The link is right below the video on that page.
What size is your composition book? It looks larger than the standard size. Great video by the way. I'm about to start my first year and I'm so glad I stumbled across your channel!

Its a big notebook if you arent aware
Thank you. Well done and helpful.
Did you create all the inlays (glue in papers/note sheets) for the notebook yourself? Or is there somewhere to get them?
Patrick
Thank you for your feedback. I did create the pages, they are available for free at busymissbeebe.com/inbsettuppages when you provide your email.
Thank you for this video! I'm a high school Math teacher from the Philippines by the way. I hope you could share some teaching strategies you use in your Math class. :)
Thank you for the comment! I will work on incorporating strategies into my videos.
Do allow the students to keep their book or you keep them throughout the year??
I let them choose. There’s a bin in the classroom where they can keep their notebooks if they want.
I have a question about the grades, Does it affect their progress report and report cards?
That is totally up to you as the teacher. My school has a culture where many students wouldn’t do this if it wasn’t for a grade, so I add it in as a quiz grade at the end of the quarter. Love it!!!!!
Thank you!
Where did you get your table of contents template?
I made it myself. I will have available for free on my new blog once it's set up. I'm going to re-reply with a link when it's ready.
Do you allow students to draw the info if they chose too?
Absolutely! I have some students that elect to not do the notebook at all. (Some because they don’t want to put in the effort, but most because it’s just not for them.)
@@BusyMissBeebe If they elect not to do it, what do you do different for them?
Wonderful video. However when I add my name and email to get access to the free print outs, I am unable to access them.
Hello! Thanks for the video! Super helpful! One question: Where did you find the I can statements for geometry? Or did you make them yourself?
I made those. I'm working on getting everything that I've shared in my videos on my blog. Hopefully by the spring I will be done.
Where can I buy your template for the very first page of the notebook? I seem to be having a hard time trying to create my own!
I made the template myself. I've thought about making it available for others to use, but it is so customized to my needs, I didn't think it would work out.
Are you going to put this on your tpt for geometry?
SweetDee101 I am not, but I’ve put almost everything up on my blog (for free). busybeebe.blogspot.com
Will you have the students take the notebooks home or do you have them keep it in the classroom ?
It’s up to you. I allow my students to take them back and forth because they want to be able to use them for their independent practice.
LOL

I actually like this, which is very sad. If students in 10th grade have to do something like this, it shows a sorry state of the educational abilities and maturity of kids today.
How is offering students a hands-on way to effectively take notes a sorry state? Work smarter, not harder 🤷
I know what you mean. Students today are very different from students when I was growing up. But when I was student we had an entire course in 6th grade dedicated to how to organize, how to take notes, how to study, etc. I loved that course, and wish it was offered to every student. @@BusyMissBeebe that course is still alive and well. It's called AVID 👍
Define "common core rigor."
From my experience, there's not enough rigor, compared to what I learned at the same age.
Yes! So much of what is “common core” is not even as tough as what I learned 10 years ago. And yet, students still struggle. 🤔
Interactives makes me stressed 😩
