Brian, just found your channel. Your honesty and straightforwardness in dealing with your SCI is a great inspiration to all of us,even if we don't share you disability. Your courage is giving so many people hope.
Brian - I have been watching a bunch of your videos and just want to say you must be an inspiration to others with SCI. You appear to be kicking SCI's ass and not letting it stop you from living your life. To take time out of your life to show others the lessons you've learned is very cool.
That wheel chair and desk are awesome!! I'm so glad you seem to have such a great outlook and positive attitude. It goes so far showing people that a handicapped person still is capable of living a full life!!! Thank you for sharing your world!!!!
You got it down Dude! I admire your admire your attitude and determination to overcome "just being in a chair". I'm in a chair as well and this gives ME inspiration to continue to try and be "normal" despite all the adversities! God Bless you....AND your employer!
I am certain that many benefit from your videos. Though I am not challenged physically...like you, it could happen at any instance. You chose to not be selfish in your situation, and to share, what others may not due to the fact that much of our LIFE is personal. You take away the sadness we feel for you, and you replace that with applause directed towards all you have accomplished. You did have a NORMAL life prior to your accident....we tend to forget that! Thanks Brian! You look fit, happy, and determined in your life, and I wish you all successes in all you attempt to conquer. There is no hurdle for you....just smooth sailing . Be happy always!!
Its amazing to see how you just embrace and carry on. If you do have time go and look at a couple of my videos regarding adventure and toys and just overall stuff. Great job!
Hi Brian, really glad to have encountered your videos. I've earmarked this one for inclusion on our website which hosts links to any video of help or interest to disabled people, whatever their impairment. Please feel free to submit any others you'd like to share.
Great video! I'm wondering if the chest strap is too tight and that's why you are having trouble breathing? I wonder if you could rig up something so that you are still getting the trunk support you need, but not binding you up so high on your chest near your diaphragm? Maybe a strap that is much wider? Just thinking out loud.
Have you heard about the fairly recent advances in Bionic Exoskeleton's? Basically robotic legs you wear on the outside that allow parapelegics to stand and walk. There has been a lot of exciting research done in this field at U of C Berkeley in California and there is a very nice exoskeleton out on the market called REX made in Israel. Right now prices are high as the technology is relatively new, but like any technology as it advances and these devices go into mass production, economies of scale will result and they will be affordable. I think you would be an ideal candidate for one. By the way, thanks for all the hope and inspiration you provide both for paralyzed and able bodied people as well with your videos.
The standing chair that you used is interesting - never seen one like that before. It's a manual with a power stander. What brand/year is it please. I've thought of getting a stander (not mobile) for my workspace. Any thoughts on those?
I bought it used and have no idea what kind it is. It doesn't have any logos. But yes It's manual until I use the power assist to stand. I used it today at work actually. I don't use it every day though.
Wow Brian, that's awesome! Was the company you work for willing to do this without any problems to your desk? Also you are very handy my friend... You are always talking about adjustments you make to things... haha really cool man! Keep up the awesome videos.
Yes, it was very easy to modify my existing desk and my employer was happy to do this for me. All they had to do was slide the legs under the desk and screw them down. You're right, I've always been a handy person and I enjoy tweaking things to make them custom. Thanks for the positive feedback, Joe!
JoeOnWheels Under the Americans with Disabilities Act, companies are required to provide reasonable accommodations. The cost of the adjustable desk won’t “break the bank” or have an adverse effect on the structure of the building; therefore it’s a reasonable accommodation
Do you still have this chair? If so power assist wheels will make it easier to push around the office (providing the chair is compatible--if you had to, I'm sure you could modify it). The irony in power assist wheels is they are heavy. This was obviously pre ab-binders day. After you got the ab-binder...did you notice a difference in breathing?
Brian Great video. How long were you out of work for after you were injured? Do you still work for the same company and may I ask what you do for a living? How long ago were you were hurt. I like your elevating desk and standing wheelchair. May I suggest next time you fly take your wheelchairs on board the plane with you so they don't get damaged on you by the careless baggage handlers. I know a fellow Veteran who is a quadriplegic who had his wheelchair wheels badly damaged by the baggage handlers. He couldn't even roll his chair in the airport. The wheels had to be taken to a shop in the airport to be be straightened out so he could use his chair again. Long story short he had to get new wheels before he came home. May I ask are you a fellow Veteran? If so thank you for your service Brian.
If you find torso support helpful, take a look at Inova Corsetry-the corset vest. They make corsets for the male body. Like a female corset it provides back support but they tailor it to the male physique. It’s less bulky than any medical back brace and it’s firm enough to provide really good support. So if you like the compression your tight shirt gives you, you may like the extra support this undergarment might give you.
Hi , I have a question did you're employee provide you with accessible desk or did you have to pay it for you're self. Because I know se employees offer accessible accommodation for their employees and what type of work do you do thanks man great video really helpful.
Hi There~ Thanks for all the great videos! Is this the same standing chair you use at home (in the laundry room video)? Do you bring it to work every day,or just keep it there? Thanks from an OT student, all your videos have been really helpful!
Hi Brian. So it has been 3 years now since you posted this video. How is your standing routine now? Do you stand more than 2,5 hours per day? I have a regular standing frame at home, in which I stand roughly 2 hours per day. I've been thinking about getting the same office setup to my workplace as you have in this video.
Wow u r a brave gentlemment, courageous n determination. Do u have a family dad, mam, brothers n sisters or girlfriend who cn hdylp u sometimes with other thts?
As more and more workplaces provide those adjustable standing desks to their able-body employees as well, I would imagine this would become easier and easier accommodation for folks to receive if they have a desk job that allows them to not have to move about the office for periods of time.
Hi Brian- for some reason my commenr is being deleted over and over again/ Wanted to tell you that you,'re doing great- a real inspiration!!! Hello Brian! Thank you so much for you videos, they have been very helpful! I have a question that I was hopeing you could help me....what do you think about Supracor Stimulite Corbee Wheelchair Cushion? I was trying to find a vid about cushions but I don't know if you have made one! thanks a lot! Sebastian
Hi Sebastian! I tried the Supracor cushions and didn't feel they gave me enough protection. I would check my skin after sitting for a little while and my butt had red marks showing there was a decent amount of pressure. I prefer air filled cushions. I currently use a ROHO hybrid. It has a solid base with an air pocket for your butt. It's light weight and doesn't require a lot of maintenance. Luckily I have a spare just in case I got a puncture but they come with a patch kit and are easy to fix if you ever do run into a "flat." I actually did make a video on cushions if you care to check it out. Good luck! ua-cam.com/video/O-xj21W0MS8/v-deo.html
Hi,Brian. My name is Ludmila. Would you be so kind to tell the trade mark of the firm that made your wheelchair for standing or the name of the model of your wheelchair for standing? How do you think, is it possible to take such a wheelchair on the board of the plane? How much does it weigh and how easy is it transformed into something smaller?
+aiman haikal Not a whole lot you can do about the belly if you have a higher injury level. It's called a "para pot belly" and is mostly caused by not having any abs to hold it all in.
