In the early years of the War, the Aerosiluranti, (Special Aero Torpedo Unit) of the Regia Aeronautica was very effective and a serious threat against Allied shipping in the Mediterranean Sea. The Aerosiluranti pilots were very skillful and courageous with many of them receiving “ace” status with 5 or more ships sunk and were revered national heroes as the fighter aces were in Italy. 🇮🇹
They still was a serious threat i think at 1942. 1943 no.
They're the only branch of Regia Aeronautica that truly threatened Allied shipping in 1940-1941.
That is a quite an honor for an Air Force that was being busy, getting itself shot down across Europe.
Watching this video allowed me to at least have a glimpse of what my grandfather had to endure when he was flying this beautiful airplane. Amazing quality, thanks for uploading it and you made an Italian fella very happy

Good movie. Usually Italian torpedo pilots used to fly in 2 separated couple for all mission. The three engines solution gave the chance to many pilots to return home and acquire a great experience for next mission. Anyway no any kind of protection from fire was for the rest of the crew. Many airmen died after beaufighter or sea hurricane's fire. I was lucky to enter into a s 79 and it is very narrow for a 1,80 meters pilot. R.i.p. all WWII deaths!
Note the front is painted blue/grey to conceal the aircraft from ship gunners against the sea/sky. cool looking plane.
P:S: Having three engines seems to be an enormous bonus/life ensurance for the role of this aircraft.
3 engines is a bonus - however, I don't think the SM.79 can maintain level flight on only 1 engine, so if you lose 2, you're in big trouble.

Thanks for doing remarks on the interior! I was on the "Team Daidalos" development group back then as a cockpit modeler and had my hands on this one too for final touches (though it wasn't build originally by myself), right before it was implemented and it makes me happy to see it still used and liked. :) And I also made most of that MED map.

We Italian was crazy for flight those things in ww2. The pilots was very brave!
The SM 79 was one of the best (if not the best) torpedo bomber of the war.
Don't be fooled by its look. Even the british Swordfish was great in this role and it was a very slow single engine biplane
@@lorenzor2555 yes exactly. The right plane, in the right time and in the right place. But however it was extremely weak
Andrea Iurino weak? It could fly with one engine broken, it didn't drown if landad on water, its wings could sustain an incredible amount of demages, it was stable and very fast at low altitude (for being a bomber)... not exactly a weak plane.
Also keep in mind that Italy used it in the early stages of the war. When british used planes like the Gladiators or the Hurricanes (and many other planes had wood structures and fabric covers). You can't compare a torpedo bomber of 1940-1942 like the Sparviero to much more modern planes that were available only in the last stages of the war, like the Mustang, Thunderbolt, Mosquito (still made of wood, indeed), etc
@@lorenzor2555 yes I know I wrote that it was the right plane in the right moment. But when we need to upgrade our planes we didn't do that.

Esiste un libro su questo aereo e su gli aereosiluranti italiani si intitolata "il gruppo Buscaglia" non so se esiste in lingua inglese è ricco di testimonianze tipo....non lo chiedevamo mai ma una volta che ci si avvicinava alle navi i cacci inglesi si allontanavano e cominciava il fuoco contraereo delle navi inglesi,gli avieri armieri lasciavano le loro postazioni e si stringevano intorno a noi piloti facendoci scudo con i loro corpi contro le eventuali schegge,per noi la missione era la cosa più importante. Un altra testimonianza era che i piloti insegnavano a gli avieri a pilotare l'aereo( era una cosa vietata) perché in caso di morte o ferimento grave dei piloti anche un mitragliere doveva essere in grado di portare l'aereo a casa.

Pretty cool mission done there! :D Not the easiest one... If the Beaufighters had the guts of the Hurricanes, you'd been shred to pieces quite a few times.
BTW: you have to align the two gunsight elements to aim with the front gun. Guess, the default buttons where Shift+F1.

I play Il-2 long time ago... and i know that u need to feather the prop. of dead engine, close radiators and trim the plane! It's easier to fly...on realistic settings...

What caliber machine gun was that on the back of the plane?
Do you ever tried with one player being in co-pilot position? Does it have any effect on main pilot controling or is it just there? I see that one player can be a co-pilot.
We did that before in "To Hell and Heaven". It was buggy in this mission, so we did not use it.
@@Fishyyy only thing (I think) about co-pilot is that if a main pilot got his head blown off, than co-pilot takes the flight.

what future missions do you guys have in the works?
I am working on a Blenheim and a Lancaster video at the moment. I'm currently recording the video footage for both. The Lancaster mission will be a 'To Hell and Back' video and the making will take a while.
We tried to record a P-40 mission in Africa, but the first tries were disastrous. I have a Wellington mission planned, in which we attack a german battleship in Brest.
I succesfully recorded a Mosquito night fighting mission and we attacked B-24s in Bf 110s, but both those recordings are kinda last resort. I will use them when I run out of stuff. The Mossi one isn't really interesting and the Bf 110 mission was quite unsuccesful.

Hey Fishyyy, what do you recommend to a relative flight simulator newbie starting out on 1946? I’ve downloaded the SAS and BAT mods, been testing out stuff, but I’m really struggling with things like spotting (have to use my mouse in my left hand to look around), overall dogfighting, and basic navigation (which is funny because in irl I’m decent at VFR navigation).

Can't really help you with spotting stuff, if you aren't ambidextrous flying with one hand at the mouse is odd, especially in the beginning. One usually uses TrackIR to have both hands on stick and throttle, while still beeing able to look around. Hotas -> hands on throttle and stick.
Fishyyy Unfortuently I don’t have the funds to get a TrackIR at the moment, and this pandemic means whatever is available has to got to that rn. Regardless, I’ll make sure to give you vid a watch!
@@thirstysailor579 If you have a hat switch on your joystick I'd recommend mapping the snap views to that. Not as good as TrackIR but it helps. Either that, or map your numpad for snap views.

It's a game that is beeing played online. You can buy the game online. There are multiple ways to buy it, the easiest probably is through Steam.

@@Fishyyy This is basically for multi-engine planes (B17s, Liberators, B25s, etc.), if one or two engines are damaged by gunfire, the pilot can shut off those engines separately to keep them from exploding, while still able to fly (tho much slower). Just was wondering if this game gives you that function.
You can shut down individual engines. Engines don't explode in the game, so there is no real gameplay reason to do so. From a role playing standpoint it could be a thing to try to keep the engine "operable" by shutting it down, before it becomes inoperable due to lack of oil and or water. That would not have a real gameplay benefit, though. On the contrary, when you are trying to RTB ASAP, just gunning the engine is better.
