Wireless CarPlay and android auto should be a standard by now. It’s been out for 4-5 years now.
I can't believe people want this. Might be handy for a short drive but seriously if you're cranking the tunes and using maps on a roadtrip your phone's going to be dead by the destination.
@@Blober112 I have this invention in my car, it's called a phone charger. It may look like magic since it's actually wireless too. QI compatible phone cradles are the best thing ever, since I drive from location to another constantly and use both music streaming and Waze navigation all the time. No need to physically plug in phones all the time.

Not on Toyota. Toyota has refused Android Auto until now. Only new models have gotten Apple CarPlay and Toyota is slowly rolling out Android Auto. People with older model Toyota's are stuck with old outdated multimedia system that Toyota is not updating
John Grech 2017 camaro has a wireless charger and Apple CarPlay, but I can’t really use the wireless charger ever cause my phone has to be plugged in. Wireless charging is also becoming the standard for phones so this feature will need to become a standard also to keep up.
It looks amazing but the resistive touchscreen and resolution are letdowns. Meanwhile alpine and pioneer can’t seem to make a normal looking headunit that belongs outside of need for speed Tokyo drift.

At $399, this was a steal imho. My coworker had this head unit and while it might be low res, it did a really good with the reflection and glare.

Could be awesome with volume knob...
I was worried about this, but the volume adjusts pretty quickly, so it just takes a short hold of the buttons to make big changes (just tap the button for small changes). The Pioneer head unit I had before had a knob and I had to spin that repeatedly to make minor adjustments. I surprisingly like the Sony volume buttons.
I would say the same thing, but I have a volume knob on my steering wheel.

Resolution is 800x480. That's straight up trash!!! Especially on a screen that is almost 9 inches. Sony and all these other head unit makers making non-HD crap and charging obscene prices can rot in hell.

Just got this in my 2019 Tacoma. Shit bangs, got a full Sony build, and two ten inch subs with full sound deadening. Sounds like I’m literally at a venue.
It would be interesting if Sony finally integrated some permanent memory for settings and radio stations so you don't have to set all settings again after the battery was disconnected for a few minutes.

put one of these in my 95 civic hatch fits amazingly still learning how to use it tryn put my own wallpaper since you can now add ur own (you couldnt when this video was published)
This is a great radio, I was excited to see this in-depth review, I’ll just get another pioneer for my other car. If I didn’t need the HDMI I would get this.
I'm glad it has a height adjustment. I saw this when it first was announced and I was concerned that it would block the air vents on top of my single din. The design looks really nice. The resolution admittedly really sucks, but considering how brief I see it while driving and how far it is from me, it's fine. It would be nice if the price was just a bit lower, but it's definitely one I would consider.
Such a great design, but once you hit me with the "no wireless android auto", then I knew this stereo wasn't it for me. Sometimes I wonder how crazy would it be if a phone company (like Samsung, etc) actually made a head unit! Would be so up to par with today's technology, and just destroy these units.

8:29 AMOLED Screen and 120hz refresh rate is much more needed in Car Stereos than smartphones. Such a laggy screen in a moving car is a total disaster.
In actual use, it's not perceptibly laggy at all. You're not watching movies or playing games on this screen.
But could you afford it amoled 120hz? Android Head unit is sold between 99-499USD but the specs is even worse than Redmi 9 at all, not so worthy, Why don't you buy a good Single Din with Aux and Bluetooth and a Samsung 10 inch Tablet plus holder suction cup? It is still much cheaper and better than waiting for it 🤣
@@alvintanimin9218 A tablet stuck to the dash with suction cups would be an easy target for thieves, and I don't want to have to keep taking it on and off. Also, I suspect that unlike a head unit, most tablets are not designed for the extreme temperatures that the interior of cars are subject to, and it likely wouldn't last too long. Furthermore, I've found that Bluetooth connections for car audio can be pretty flaky. The premium in price for a durable head unit with Android Auto that's integrated into the car is worth it.
Lol I bought this last year and got buyers remorse while waiting. Sent it back and bought a $70 Bluetooth radio
I was tired a bit of testing these head units. Tried Chinese Android ones, Kenwood, some no-names. Always something was wrong - sound quality, missing/buggy functionalities or design that did not fit the dashboard. Finally I decided to build my own headunit based on the Raspberry PI 4 computer and OpenAuto Pro software. I used 10'' touchscreen, added Crunch amplifier. Finally headunit in my car works like a charm.

Have this unit, overall positive experience but worst thing has to be the screen is too dim. Get really bad glare on sunny days which makes it hard to see even on max brightness
I just don't get it. It's 2019 and they chose to go with a non HD resistive touch display? On top of that they aren't taking advantage of Android automotive. Why would you not want to run an os that opens your customers up to all the apps they would need?

91lifetime23 This one is resistive screen, so you wont be able to touch your screen with more than one finger also not as clear as the xav5000 due to capacitive screens being clearer than resistive

I prefer the industrial design of this over the Alpine ilx-f259 and ilx-f309 but the resistive touchscreen is a deal breaker. $600 is a lot of money for a low resolution, resistive screen. I still would have bought it if it had Maestro RR support

The internal amp is actually the best we've tested for stereos. Completely agree with needing an AUX, HD screen

I was hoping this would help avoid using the adapter with my 2017 Honda Civic Hatchback LX... major issues with steering wheel controls configuring and rear view camera issues.

Yes. it’s not perfect tho. Could use better resolution, HDMI port, and a volume knob.
This stereo drains my battery so I changed the connection to power it only with open switch but clock resets everytime.

Half the time I am unable to see the screen. Sunlight washes out screen. Found visual settings but it seemed to only change the light on control buttons. Sometime useless when using map. Any suggestions?
Adjust the angle, it solves it most of the time.

Btw - Do you know (or could you ask your guy) if any of the small car Sony RM-X remotes can be used to control the head unit? I’ve seen they have a new upcoming RM-X8, but is this just to control your phone from Bluetooth, or could you control the entire head unit from the small remote that can be added to the car.

I don't think it will control the stereo in the way you're asking, like changing screens, sources, moving around like a cursor. it is OK unit, but if Sony or other major brand comes up with bigger screen with higher resolution model, I'll upgrade to that.

I sell this unit in my audio shop... went to sony training on this unit 9-1-19 ...still would not trade my kenwood ddx575bt for it... only thing good about Sonys unit is a bigger screen...and lacks a dsp and a good 13band eq ,time aligment which is on my personal kenwood radio ddx575bt......
Your Kenwood is double DIN; this one is single. Apples and oranges.

Looks great and I could probably live with the resolution. But the lack of iDataLink Maestro means that it's literally not an option for a huge portion of somewhat new cars, including my own.

Sony 8000 series hu doesnt have built in amp. Only 7000 series model head unit has built in amp. Check the spec on the website before you ....
I prefer the ball-joint because I like to angle the screen towards me but this looks good.
One measurement I don't see is what is the furthest you can adjust the screen out from the head unit? I have a car where the radio is kinda recessed back into the dash in a gap that's not wide enough for this screen to sit between it. So the screen would have to stick out at least 1.75" to sit in front of that gap. Either that, or when I install it, I don't install the radio all the way in the dash and it looks a little janky from the top and sides.

I may need to extend the screen further to clear the upper dash on my 86 Toyota truck as the radio pod is angled up. A verticle scren orientation will hit and the forward lean may still not clear. Fabricating the needed extension bracketing is not an issue. The issue is I may need a short jumper cable to connect the screen to the unit.
My question is the Sony connector plugs of industry standard or a Sony unique design? Knowing Sony, it's a unique design. Still can be done but a pain.
Any pics of both male/female plugs?

I own this radio. I bought it for my 85 mercury cougar and it works perfectly nothing like this in the market. wish it was wireless android auto but works fine just using usb.
What dash kit you use I have a 86 oldsmobile and the body of it not fitting tight.

Because of it's permanent anti glare protector on the screen, if you want to know, just put a antiglare protector and see the difference

How are these units having such low res displays without poor touch control. Sony makes full HD tablets and phones for 1/2 the price of this HU, the screen and lag should not be an issue. So disappointing.

All these floating head stereo units are made by one company? Alpine, Don't, Pioneer etc all seem to be the same. Just different inputs from one camera to three, HDMI to none etc. But the basic layout looks identical.
Price seems to be a huge difference depending on brand. Again, same head unit.

Just had this radio installed in my buick enclave. So far so good but that glare is horrible in the daytime especially with sun roof.
Overpriced for what it is. It's not 2014. The average $250 android headunit is more capable.
A few physical button/knob would be a perfect piece. Like volumn knob(very important)

You can buy a brand-new 1080p tablet for around ~$150 usd. Why are screen resolutions still so crappy on modern head units? I understand why they cost more than tablets, but poor resolution make the units feel obsolete out of the box.

No major brand manufacturers have a made a unit that interfaces with all those features, unless you are installing a Tesla style stereo
So clean signal at volume 36 out of 50 max isn’t very impressive.

Its funny because now capacitive touch is outdated....wtf its literally 2020 and we don't have 1080p hd screens standard on these cars. Amazon is selling Chinese 10 inch tablets for $150 that they have to purposely handicap to sell more expensive models. Outrageous.
Sony makes nice looking dins.. but there is always something missing.. i truly wish they would release something that can complete with the top of the line dins from kenwood and pioneer.
