Hello Sir, great video! On my lathe, when I drill blanks like this that MUST be drilled through the segments and NOT just the middle of the blank (as you described) How do you accomplish that when the chuck that I mount the blank into wants to center the blank. This makes my markings irrelevant. Hope that makes sense. I was trying to sand the blank perfectly so that dimensionally the desired drilling was actually centered on the blank.
I think that kit would pair nicer with a blank using black fiber paper/aluminum accents rather than the white fiber paper. Also, your blank has a horizontal ring around it near the centerband which looks too busy for my taste. I agree w/ most of the comments here... very nice work on the blank, but it just doesn't pair well to that kit. Thanks for sharing the process.
I see so many segment things turned any more I’m just not a fan I’d rather see a natural piece of wood with nice grain or maybe a burl I know there’s a lot of thought an time put into it but for me it’s hard to beat a really pretty piece of wood. Great video Thanks Lynn
Hi, Lynn. Everyone has their personal tastes but I agree with most everyone above--nice design, not for his kit. And I have had more than one segmented blank blow apart during drilling as well. Keep on keeping on!
I absolutely agree with Jerry Puckett. Pen turning has gotten so ornate that it so more about the wood but rather who can make the fanciest looking pen. Get back to making good looking wooden pens. Same thing applies to bowls. It is no longer the time you put into making the bowl but rather the number of hour spent painting, scalping, etc. We should change the name of AAW from AAwoodturning to AAOrnamenting
Hi Lynn, That blank would look good on a Sierra pen kit where it will be the main point of interest and not the kit. Any reason why when you made the second blank you didn't cut along both lengths just the one? Or is the reason is that the first one blew apart? Cheers, Huw
I think the Blank was well done, I liked how you put it together and had the segments match the tube. Well Done on the Blank. However when I look to the pen kit, my eyes are immediately drawn to the two black sections. They Pop more than the blank, my eyes don't spend-much time on the blank. The blank you wind up using should be an eye catcher that will blend with the black sections. The blank should gain the attention before the black part of the pen kit. you could use a blank with a bit of black in it to connect the two complete black sections with bright colors that can be used as the "Pop" and the black would me minimized because it;s connected together, just a thought.
I love the blank, but I think your right I don't think the kit is for that blank or the blank is for that kit, hopefully you can use the blank with something else or that kit with a different finish
The blank is actually very nice. I'm not a fan of the kits with metal tops (like the Oxford and Zens) so, I have to agree, this is not a good combination.
Hey Angi, that is part of my deli ma, I like the blank by its self but not with this hardware and I don't know of another hardware kit that uses this size tube
Good looking blank Llyn,i agree with you,it doesn't really sit well with that particular kit! Would look much nicer with a brass or gun metal kit 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍

I agree with the blank change. It's a great blank but wrong pen. Thanks for sharing.
The cigar pen style letter opener uses a 10 mm tube. You could use the blank you made on that kit. The kit I use I get from Ernie at Bear Tooth Woods.
Thanks Stephen - I buy from Ernie a lot - I'll check out the letter opener

I agree completely, thanks for the reinforcement

I agree too, Jerry. Segmenting has its place but I like to celebrate a nice piece of wood just by letting it stand on its own.
IF you had used black insert it would have matched, but it still looks ok
I agree it looks OK, but not great or even good. Thanks for watching

Hey Huw. 1st one blew apart and I was rushing to get a replacement made. Thanks for watching

Thanks I’m trying to find another kit that I can use it on

Thanks I like blank just not with this hardware
Yeah, I have to agree with you. The blank doesn't really go well with that pen kit. I really do like the blank though.

I know I'm late. That pin and blank just does not go together.
Thank you sir for putting out some great content.
Thanks Tim for watching
Good looking blank Llyn,i agree with you,it doesn't really sit well with that particular kit! Would look much nicer with a brass or gun metal kit 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Thanks Alan
I agree, that blank is beautiful. However it would look better on a different kit. The single line would work better with that kit.
Thanks for the input and for watching
lynn i tried to turn a similar blank and it blew up on me but if u dont want it i'll take it if u dont want it
Hey, Lynn. Yeah, I agree, it just doesn't match the kit.
Thank you sir - always good to hear from you
Great looking blank but I agree it doesn't match the kit. I wouldn't assemble it.
Thanks George
I agree with everyone else, great looking blank but just doesn't flow with that kit.
Thanks Sue for the comment and for watching
The second blank does not have two bisecting piece's
Yep - Thanks for noticing and for watching
No problem I enjoyed watching
I think that if you would have used black accent instead of white it would have looked fine.
Nope not a good fit
Thanks
