I remember listening to this 10+ years ago, on repeat. Now I’m 28, and listening to it once again, and it’s just as good if not better. It still evokes the same emotion as it did the first time I heard it.
Funny how you find your way back to songs… seems like forever ago I listened to this song on repeat. Yet here I am 10+ years later with this song on repeat again.
it's incredible how I can't listen to this song without crying, it makes me feel all the deepest emotions at once and reflect on all he most sentimental moments in my life in an instant
Settle up, you're calling up the pain Sitting dead, the sinker and the string You came, you saw, you sawed her brain Cut out all the parts that held your stain Sitting clad, you're feeling wild to blame She's crying as you're climbing down your claim Setting up, you're counting up your names Seen enough to bend him off the frame You came, you saw, you sawed her brain Cut out all the parts that held your stain You clipped, you clawed to no applause You lost the will and bought the lying off So try to be somebody, so try to feel somebody So try to leave somebody, so hard to be somebody (where can you run) So try to be somebody, so try to feel somebody So try to leave somebody, so hard to be somebody
How are there only 54 comments for this song? Id expect there to be many more, I guess the good things in life are short lived and small. I like this song.... Much x

He did recycle this beautiful melody for holocene, and of course modified it in some ways. But to me that is what makes Justin Vernon such an amazing artist. He makes the two songs sound so different, even though they are structured so similarly. Not many artists can change so much by changing so little.
I personally think the two songs have a completely different sound to them, and I definitely don't think Justin re-used Hazelton to compose Holocene.. Although I can understand how the two songs can sound similar in some ways (:
the only similarities are the guitars tuning and the fingerpicking pattern. i have a guitar tuned the same way and its very distinctive, its standard tuning, but the two middle strings (D,G) are up an octave
I know this has a different feel and all, but the way he uses multiple guitars is quite similar to Holocene. I'd guess one of these guitars are in nashville tuning just like in Holocene. Nevertheless a great song!
I love how he went back to this to create Holocene.

Who else here after the DeYarmond Edison epoch announcement w this album on it?
May I humbly suggest this is Justin Vernon’s greatest song?
He didn't recycle the melody for no reason that's for sure!! Beautiful
That guitar melody is top tier
Settle up, you're calling up the pain
Sitting dead, the sinker and the string
You came, you saw, you sawed her brain
Cut out all the parts that held your stain
Sitting clad, you're feeling wild to blame
She's crying as you're climbing down your claim
Setting up, you're counting up your names
Seen enough to bend him off the frame
You came, you saw, you sawed her brain
Cut out all the parts that held your stain
You clipped, you clawed to no applause
You lost the will and bought the lying off
So try to be somebody, so try to feel somebody
So try to leave somebody, so hard to be somebody (where can you run)
So try to be somebody, so try to feel somebody
So try to leave somebody, so hard to be somebody
*you wreck and then you run
I think it's actually "you reckon and you run" :)
Finally read it correctly. Story of my life
Thanks ❤️

pure nostalgia
i think i wanna dance this at my wedding, such a lovely song
did y'all ever get married? and if so did you dance to it?
I wish I knew about him when I got married!
I'm also sure that he reused (and modified) the Hazelton guitar theme for Holocene. It has developed, as he has.
It reminds me of holocene
It’s november 2017, and i still listening
January 2020, still listening
July in keystone heights Fl 2020
great track. love it

This man can do no wrong.
Cuanto sabe!
Great lyrics
I miss jogja night street.
@Sarah D Definitely one of my favourite songs written by Justin Vernon! (:
It sounds like Holocene because the rhythm and key of the guitar are the same. Vocals are totally different though. I love it.
Does anyone know where to get this song for an iPhone!? I've pretty much searched everywhere for it!!
convert it from youtube to mp3 and drag and drop it to iTunes after its been converted.
Ashley Jones Doing that leaves you with less than 200kb quality

Does anyone know ukulele chords to this song? Desperately want to play this
Tune
haha yeah the bloke i take my guitar two is also a luthier so he can set the tension right on the neck
The picking structure is similar to Holocene, other than that they're nothing alike, completely different chords
If you want to hear a song that actually does sound similar to this, check out Father Said by Thelma Plum
Whoa, this is Holocene. I'm happy he decided to reuse it.

Was Justin in the band DeYarmond Edison?
Yes
so try to leave somebody (8)
Oh okay! Thank God I didn't try using the normal D and and G strings, I'll ask my guitar tech if he can do it for me. Thanks!
so in terms of the tuning its eadgbe
but the strings you use are eabebe
@RebMusic- Please edit the Artist/Title are reversed
Do you know how I can find this on Spotify?
He uses lighter strings. I don't think it's possible to tune typical gauge D and G strings up an octave, hahaha.
Well, that and he's playing the same chord.
i'm scared of braking my strings :S
oh god dont use your normal strings!
i got mine set up from a guitar tech, and the strings that are an octave up are high b and e strings
