I own a 2001 800 Intruder and bought it new. It was always in need of choke to start and really needed it until it was warmed up. I actual had it in for service under warranty for the issue and they said the bike was in specs. I told myself when the warranty was done and/or before the pipes started changing color I would have it adjusted right. Well, that time cam years ago and I mad e a few adjustments. I installed Vance & Hines slip ons and took it down to have the carbs cleaned and adjusted. Had them install a stage 1 carb kit while the carbs were off and it runs so much better! It runs like it always should have ... but gets less gas mileage. Could be the fact that I drive it 80mph every time on the highway. It will do that all day long, it just doesn't like going over 115mph, but it gets up over 100mph quickly. These bikes are water-cooled and have "twin swirl combustion chambers" which gives them some good power and pull. I'm 6ft and 210lbs and the bike is a little small for me but I have always liked larger bikes. I have bought and sold several bikes over the past 20 years but i always keep this one because it is so well designed and it is fun to ride. I switch bikes with friends and everybody (especially the shorter friends) is impressed with the power, pull and comfort. We always seem to take the long way back when they are riding it :-)

I have an '86 intruder i just love... only a 700, but it is a selfmade custom rat/chopper/bobber. Red ropes, bombshell carrierbox. extended pedals, custom seat and handlebars etc... It just goes on and on, it is perfectly loud enough for my taste.

  • @khg151

I bought my new in '97 & still have it, still going strong. Loads of fun. Easy to work on, plenty of power for freeways, nimble for around town. At time I bought the Intruder, I considered a Harley 883. Glad I went with the Intruder. Was more bike for much less money. Zero repairs just maintenance, tires, batteries. I have the original ape hangers, highway bar/pegs, rear luggage mount. 100 miles on a tank of gas. Has nice sound without being obnoxious. Wished the battery loaded under the seat but not a big deal. Would maybe have prefer the star rim - spokes require a bit more attention to keep clean. I prefer the way my year sits lower due to lower fat rear tire, higher taller thinner front tire tank and handle bars higher, but some prefer 2000+ which has the wider front tire, sits a bit flatter/level (same height tires).

Bought a Intruder 700 back in 1986. It came with straight handle bars instead of the down sweep ones. Other then in needed the pedals to be moved more forward about 3 inches I loved the bike. I would cruise down I70 at 80mph with no problems. 5 speed transmission the 1400's came with a 4 speed.

I have an 87 700cc Intruder, very reliable. The only complaint is what anyone riding a low rider gets...a sore rear end after an hour or so. My 90 Honda CBR 600 f2 was much more comfortable on long trips and that was a race bike. Your seating position on the Suzuki puts all the pressure on your tailbone because it forces you to drive hunched over, arms forward, instead of the more comfortable upright road bike position. If you buy one, be prepared for some minor back pain. I still have my intruder. I just use it for the short trip to work and back.

I had a 2006 after they rebranded it a boulevard, had the exact same power, just crummy handlebars, and no sissy bar. I'm back to a 99' now that I found in a barn with 4,xxx miles on it. I’ve had a lot of bikes and bought a 2003 Intruder vs 800 last year, I love it! I don’t know how people are getting all these high speed quotes because I travel around 70, and even though it could go maybe another 5-8 mph without straining, it is no longer “just cruising” it’s doing some work! It accelerates up to 100, quick for the v engine, but I want at least 900 cc to cruise at 70+ speeds comfortably! I want to change the rake a few degrees, put about a 10” over springer, slim front wheel and make it level! I am also moving my controls a bit forward. If anyone knows any reasonably priced mods for more power I would love to hear, I want to keep this bike a few years!

Had one too. I am 6'2" and felt a little big on it. But I put saddlebags, ape hangers and a highway bar across the front and it felt a whole lot bigger. Lol I remember I actually used the the heel/achilles tendon area of my boot to shift up and the heel to shift down. The guys I rode with used to say I was kicking her when I shifted as I pulled up my knee. Always took it out on So Cal freeways no problem...but I did get blown around a bit on windy days. It was my first bike and I bought it on a whim when I tagged along with a buddy to pick up a part from the Suzuki dealer. Rode it home within an hour. Was comfortable with it in a day. I added the extras within a month. The only reason I parted with it was I got run down by a drunk driver as a pedestrian and was off work for several months. Disability didn't pay enough to make rent, car and motorcycle payment and insurances...so I sold it. I even rode 2 up on it alot no problem, you could feel 2up...but it did it. Great first bike that you can find for minimum chingo.

They still make them now... its called a Boulevard S50... (50 cubic inches/805cc)... looks the same... plus 2 other models with more crap on them...
Buy a used one for $1500... many still like new around... very dependable...
Everybody does what this guy does at first... under revs it to about 2500 RPMs... it doesn't HP out until 7,000... revs 7500... makes 120 MPH... 5 gears...
Of course, as a V-twin, it cruises most smoothly about 750 - 2500 RPMs... good MPG...
I love mine... red... only bike I'll ever need... and it's gorgeous...
Depending on motorcycle tax laws at time, these were also made in 700cc and 750cc... They're OHC and 4 valves/cylinder... strong idle...

Believe you me get the highway pegs with this bike but keep in mind it's a midsize cruiser not a long ride highway bike but it handles the road very well it's just not built for riders much bigger or longer then a hundred and twenty miles cause the 2 gallon gas tank will need filling up about every hundred and ten miles outside of that my only other complaint is the battery is located underneath the bike and is a pain in the buttinski to get at ! If you do get one make sure it has a battery tender pre installed that will save you lots and I do mean lots of grief. People ound for pound and dollar for dollar it's the best all around cruising bike easy no doubt about it.And a damn good bike for a first time rider it's easy to handle and very forgiving clutch and transmission.

I got one. Except mine is a 2006 boulevard witch is pretty much the same bike, even the same color. Love mine, ride the piss outa it. Some highway pegs would be nice tho. For a cruiser it’s very nimble and has good power.

Just bought my 99 intruder 800 for $1100 the power of this little bike will definitely surprise you and they are super reliable there are owners that have over 100,000 miles still running strong! Keep the bike around 70 on the highway and the motor will last forever it's running the motor at high rpm for long periods of time that destroy these motors.

Not sure about sporty's reliability. Japanese bikes, imho, have the best reliability. European bikes are plenty finicky, based on my reading.
My last venture was a test ride on a new '16 or 17 HD street bob with the mini apes. Nice enuff, and i could've afforded to pay cash on the spot - $16k+T+L....sorry, charlie. I'd rather the suzi's shaft drive than a belt. But, hey! Whatever you like/ want, gopher it!!! 🙃

I’ve got a 93 intruder 800vs, I’m 5’10 about 175, topped out at 110 on the dot. She’s comfortable riding at 80 on the highway, the 0-60 on it pulls pretty damn good but once u get to the higher speeds, 80-90 the acceleration decreases pretty drastically. She took her time getting to 110 but when she did, I felt pretty damn stable on it. Going fast around turns it’ll wobble slightly but nothing crazy

Just came across this video. Was looking for reviews just out of curiosity. Mine (1996) is in the shop for a new switch and tune up. I am 5'4" and 145 lbs. Love the low center of gravity and look. I would not want to take it across the country but it is great for shorter cruising. Reminds me of the Kawasaki LTDs I used to ride back in the late 70s and early 80s. Kaws had chain drive. The shaft drive is a great improvement.
