Tillage Work Prep/Chopping Corn Stalks/Plow Coulter Replacement

  • Spring Tillage work preparations are being done. The plow has brand-new shears, or is it shares? Let us know in the comments below. The next step was to replace a colter that was no longer functioning. To do that, Alan tried experimenting to see if he could make a swap from a Case plow to this one. While Alan was working on the plow, Jen's Dad was smoothing out the driveway with his John Deere B and a railroad track piece. Soon enough it was time for Alan to go to work, so Paul, Alan's brother, took his Farmall 560 out with the International 40 stalk chopper and chopped the corn stalks from the corn we picked last fall.

    When I was your boys age, my dad used a stone-boat to level the drive (and fields). He never used stone in it however, he always used my brother and me. We would ride in the stone-boat behind and the tractor. Needless to say, it drove my over protective mother nuts. LOL

    Corn field looking good there bud. Nice adaptive engineering aka making it fit on the plow cultivator. We did a lot of that when we worked the farm. Farmers here in South Central Virginia are a little late getting stuff in the ground. The soil is still a little too wet.

    Nice video from the boys. I never liked when my dad leveled the driveway. It was more difficult to ride bikes with the loose gravel. Would that stalk chopper work to cut brush or not recommended?

    • @trinitydairy
      @trinitydairy  Рік тому +1

      It doesn't really work well on brush. It does work on overgrown grassy areas.

    Do the no till farmers chop the stalks and then plant between the old rows? How many consecutive years can they do this before the old root balls become a problem? Thanks for reading and responding to comments.

    • @trinitydairy
      @trinitydairy  Рік тому

      I'm not sure, I've never done no till corn.

    • @MrMagnum7220
      @MrMagnum7220 Рік тому

      Corn after corn consecutively can create diseases. That’s why a lot of them will rotate crops like to soybeans or hay. But as far no till corn into corn stalks, it’s not done very often. They will chop up the stalks I believe then plant.

      A man of many talents I see a lot of small farmers over here in England have to find another income to help the farm stay afloat, my fathering law runs a coal yard from his farm yard, it help him out in the winter months and is slow when it’s harvest time so it works out good.

      We bought all those coulters used, I put all new bearings and grease in the other ones, this one was turning fine so I left it alone. Yeah I probably should have pulled it apart and greased it, but I didn't.it would be nice if they had grease fittings on them, so you wouldn't have to pull the bearings apart every time.
