I have been to Rio and had no issues. I would say that as long as you stay in touristic areas (and even outside of them) and avoid overexposure, it is totally fine.
Balneário Camboriú is in the state of Santa Catarina, which is the safest state in Brazil. It's even safer than some states in the US, so don't be stupid and you'll be fine. Stay away from Rio (the entire state) and Bahia, though.

But the cities of: Volta Redonda, Vassouras, Teresopolis, Petropolis, Angra dos Reis and Mangaratiba are very safe. I've never been robbed in these places and I always drive a luxury car (BMW M4), and I also carry expensive things, nothing has ever occurred to me. In the CITY of Rio de Janeiro, avoid the North Zone and West Zone, stay only in the South Zone, its safest. In the STATE of Rio de Janeiro, you will be safe anywhere. The problem that even Brazilians have is thinking that Rio de Janeiro is just the city of Rio de Janeiro, when Rio de Janeiro is also a state. The rest of the state is very good.
