That display! 😍
Awesomeness 👌
Hey glad you are liking it! ❤ The thermistor probe has a snap-on cap to protect from the sharp end from hurting someone 😮. Since you didn’t have a a screen protector to tear off, I thought I would press that cap back on. 😊😊
Ahh..she's a beauty Paul 😍 Quite a well designed and made multimeter. The test probe is actually really well made too. My my..that audible continuity was definitely ear shattering as you mentioned! Thx again mate !
Radio Shack! Oh man, I have not heard that name in a while!!!
Brings back lots of memories eh 😊
Retro aside, that is one nice and good looking meter. Definitely one on my wish list!
It really is Eric..hope you find one to add to your collection! 😊
That's an oldie but a goodie Darren Great review as always ! ! ! Fred
Thx Fred..RadioShack still seems popular after all these years..awesome!
Actually the case already has a hole for the piezo, but the legal department decided to put a label over it. “Didn’t get the memo” 😊 I only needed to use a small blade to open the label up.
Muhahaha...thx for that Paul..yup..didn't get the memo 😅
Simply beautiful multimeter. That's probably the only time when I would prefer a 9V Krona over the 1.5V because 6 batteries are just too much. And maybe would cover up that hole for the piezo. Although with a 84 dB speaker you can simultaneously do some checks around the house and scare the mice away.
Agreed..that's awhole lot of batteries to have kicking inside 1 meter! Funny,I never thought about the mice deterrent 😅 👍
Looks well made for the time, kinda wish we could have seen more involved range (-testing-)to see how well its strengths and weaknesses measure up as well as a look at input protection - a lot was glossed over here, more like a show and tell than a function testing to see how well it really performs after all these years, thats the interestiing part..Some of the much earlier RS stuff looked a bit like it was kit assembled on a kitchen table but this one looks more modern & pretty well done for the time. I was also curious about why the switch ranges were such a soft design and would liked to have seen what spring detent type was used. First meter ive seen the beep could be switched off, be a good feature to have today for working in certain office or other quiet environments. Be nice to see a followup function test on this one in the future maybe ??
I think you would be interested in the unique transistor test feature. When you put in the transistor, it tells you whether it's PNP or NPN on the display, then the order of the leads (for example EBC). Then after you make a note of it, you press the hfe button and get the gain of the transistor. I don't remember seeing another meter that did this at the time.
Hey Mike, sorry I only scratched the surface here but RETRO-TECH segments aren't really Reviews but overviews of great vintage gear. I might do a follow-up and post on keepontesting.com 😊 👍
@@pault6533that's definitely worth looking at!
@@pault6533niiiicee!
@@KeepOnTesting Yeah that selector dial is a little mushy and the detents leave something to be desired. However it does offers low friction, I bet you could on-hand operate this with that sleek stainless steel stand kicked out! I think you showed the best feature which isn't often available today (the component slot). Back in the day this meter was made, many of the components people used had axial or radial leads, so it was a blessing to have those slots. These days we are working with SMD components more often than full sized semiconductors and passives.
I am 50% in love looking upon the funny form factor and its segmented display. Why do retro multimeters look cool?
Good question..I think it's that no nonsense look they used back in the day. No frills or pretty looks just solid usability 👌
You might enjoy the UA-cam video "Segmented displays". The RS display is similar to the one shown around 3 and a half minutes in.
@@pault6533 I have a feeling you referred to the Posy video? :)
@@Alxasaurus 👍
Does it have infinite input resistance on the millivolt range?
I didn't measure the current flow but sounds like a plan.
@@KeepOnTesting It's suspicious that in this particular mode the meter does not display zero.
10 megohms on voltage measured with another ohmmeter
@@watchmakerfulmost meters will show a stray voltage with unterminated inputs, more so with less shielding or leads attached.
@@pault6533 10 MOhm is typically enough to zero out the meter.
🎉❤😍🤩💣👍👍👍
😊 👍 cheers my friend!
I bought the 174A back then. It’s in brand new condition. I keep it in a zipper case when not in use and I take the batteries out. I needed to check the voltage on an outlet yesterday but it’s not working. The display isn’t showing all of the characters properly. Probably a result of sitting in the case for years. Is there a reasonably priced place where I can send it to be repaired and calibrated?
You could send it my way.. I will repair it for free and I might use the video in a review. Email me: netplicity1@gmail.com
@@KeepOnTesting That’s very generous of you. I’ll email you in the morning. Thanks!
