Here's what I think I was seeing. Pilot turned the boat 90º to the forward movement and let the ship drag the tug along with the tug broadside providing the drag instead of using the power of the engines providing the drag. Is that correct? That is ingenious if so. There is a lot of drag sideways. Good video. I like the last two showing control movement and to tell you the truth I really couldn't discern much difference in the sound from that first one to this. Both sounded like big time prime movers.... Thanks.
You are thinking correct! :) the tug is specially designed for that. It has a big 'keel' (skeg) at the stern that has allot of drag when pulled sideways thru the water. It's approx 15m long and 4m deep. At higher speeds the tug can pull allot harder using indirect towing instead of direct pulling.
Hi. I have some questions if it is possible. on 28.34 You are repositioning for indirect speed conrol. i noticed that you made almost full ahead both engines with the wheel almost hard to starbord. Did you give full ahead to make repositionig more faster or for something else? later you only use the wheel to keep the tug in perpendicular position. as i understood from comments only dragging of the tug makes ships speed slower enough. if pilot will ask you to slow down ships speed more than 4 knots quickly. what you need to do?. reposition for indirect(direct) towing ? thanks
Just asking,..been there in 2008,towing barge out of port also with voith tug,.. In that time they had voiths without winch, ships lines on towing hook,...
Hallo mannen.
Marcel.
+Alex Lopez They're correct. Instead of controlling engine speed, the Voith prop blades are steerable, changing the pitch of the blades creates or diminishes thrust. I just did some research, it's a very interesting propulsion system. Instead of traditional props, there are vertical blades that spin, and the blade pitch can be changed to do what is needed. It looks like a giant egg beater.
Can someone please explain why it is a good idea to have a lifeboat free fall of the back of a ship when it's sinking!!! Crew better hope the back side is going down first 😂😂
That man has arms as wide as a tug boat! In all seriousness cool stuff, reminds me of the 'Slow TV' they have on NRK in Norway.
That ain't a man sir ;) it's a 'she' and she has short arms :-)
koopification oo bro come on stop joking it's split screen
lol funny
Once the ship moves forward, do you let it pull the tug along until a specific maneuver is needed? Always like yer vids.
Yep that's correct! We do however use our own power to sail astern, and follow the seaship.

Neat video. thanks for sharing.

Who’s operating the winch?
Great video and piloting
Hey, nice vids! I wonder is it difficult to learn VSP if you have ASD experience?

We still have those tugs with towing hook tough :) on which tug did you work then? Or was is an outside company you were working for?

I'm not a Tug Captain .so I'm not familiar with bridge cintrols but looks to me that the Pitch and RPM control signs are located wrong
You mean the text? ☺

Much improved!
+cal raines Thanks ! If you have suggestions to make it even better i'm all ears :)
super video
what do the yellow lights next to the throttles represent?
Those are the rpm controles of the main engines

Is this Port of Antwerp?
Yes it is. Why? :)
