I well remember experiencing a night dive with the manta's at Kona. One of my favorite dives of all time. One of the amazing aspects was even before we entered the water, one of the manta's was doing loop after loop beside the boat as if to say, "Come on guys, what's taking so long." Like they couldn't wait for us to join them.

I have done this a few times myself and loved every time. As scuba divers we are very lucky that we get to have them al around us and occasionally rubbing against us as they fly by. There is another great dive trip you have to experience. It is called the Pelagic Magic dive. It is run by Jacks Diving Locker, no I am not an employee of their shop just a satisfied customer of theirs, you go out into the ocean at night on a boat and you just float while being tethered offshore and you see what comes up from the deep. It is utterly fantastic!

For sure ! We did this the day after we were married with Jack’s diving locker. I believe one one the very best diving companies. We had orientation dive in the mid afternoon and all of 35 feet deep by the airport and maybe 250 feet from shore. There were 10 boats and around 80 divers in the water. We had extra weight on to stay on the bottom easier a tank light hand lights and a dive master for two of us so super safe. With all of the divers there was no chance of any sharks. So these mantas are residents and even know which days the divers come. They put two milk crates full of bright led lights to attract the krill which the mantas eat. We anchored an hour before sunset and were bobbing a bit too much for some people and my wife wasn’t able to dive in open water so she floated on the surface hanging onto a surf board that had lights facing down. The waves made her throw up and a manta surfaced and ate her chum ! We dove down in amazement when 9 rays came in. The largest was 12 feet wide and one thousand lbs according to our master who is a world authority on these magical gods. The big one came from behind me and just skimmed the top of my head ! For any diver or anyone who wants a once in a life time adventure this is a great one . Jacks has a pool for recertifications so it is nice and easy to make this happen if you haven’t dove in a few years, it’s not deep at 35 feet and not dangerous. Oh ya, the next day we flew over some flowing lava in a helicopter ! Cheers and see you next summer at Hornby

I've only been on one night dive. The bottom time was great, but the open water (it was a boat dive) freaked me out. I'll do it again if I get the chance. 👍
