Butterfly + Kid on the Mountain ~ Irish Fiddle Tunes! | Katy Adelson

- Here are two popular Irish fiddle tunes: The Butterfly, and The Kid on the Mountain. These are both slip jigs, so they are written with 9/8 timing (9 beats per measure, with eighth notes each getting a beat). I think this sort of gives the tunes a pulse of 3 sets of 3 notes, whereas a regular jig (written in 6/8 timing) sort of has a pulse of 2 sets of 3 notes.
I think The Butterfly was written by Tommy Potts, although some people attribute it to Sean Potts. Other's say only the first part was a new composition, and that the rest of the tune is a different slip jig called "Barney's Goat." I see some similarities, but I personally think they are different enough to be different tunes. :)
I usually hear The Butterfly played fairly slowly with lots of lilting slides and ornamentation. The tune sounds really pretty that way, but I like to play it a bit faster and fluttery. To me, butterflies are fluttery, a bit nervous, and quick to move from one flower to another (unless you have a cool camera that can slow down their flight...hehehe!), but I think either interpretation is nice. :)
The Kid on the Mountain is another popular Irish slip jig, often played after The Butterfly. It's quite a long tune with 5 parts. It took me a while to get the hang of the tune, and the order of all the parts. It often shifts from minor to major, and I think it's a difficult tune to add much additional ornamentation. I think it's one of those tunes that has a lot of stuff going on with very few pauses that allow you to regain your ground lol. It has a bit of a "call and response" vibe, which seems to be kind of rare with a lot of these Irish instrumental tunes.
Rumor has it that there's a 6th part to Kid on the Mountain. It's a bit lower than most of the other parts. I have I never heard anyone play the 6th part in sessions, and I'm always too nervous and shy to bring it up (plus, I often forget how it goes since almost no one seems to play it). We usually just play the 5 parts I have in the video, with some slight regional variations. I think that's the most common way to play this tune in Colorado! =) If you play Kid on the Mountain with 6 parts instead of 5, please let me know in the comments! I'm really curious and want to learn more about it!
Thank you for watching, and I hope you have a good rest of the week! =)

Always a pleasure to hear you play.
Yay! Thank you for listening! =)
you right
Beautiful Katy! Beautiful music! You make me smile!
You are terrific Katie 💜
2 great slip jigs played by a talented musician in a lovely setting.
Love these two Irish tunes, and how much passion you play them! My fav is the bodhran playing.
I agree, butterflies have random and somewhat frantic patterns of flight and landings. Increasing the tempo better depicts their true nature. I have a little film clip near a tiny waterfall in a normally dry creek where dozens of migrating orange butterflies are desperately seeking hydration where water is splashing on a sandbank. They know they are vulnerable and space is limited so they're fluttering and landing and landing and fluttering in a very wary and nervous manner. I believe you captured the true essence of their nature in this rendition.😊😊😊
Finally a version on YT with drive! LOVELY playing!
you are touching my heart with your music
Simply incredible.

J'adore !
I love it!!!! And now.... I have muuuch inspiration to practice hahaha
Amazingly precise, clear and distinct. I attempt to transpose most of your outstanding fiddle technique to ..... wait for it .... 'clawhammer' banjo. ;-)
You are awesome!!! ❤️
Great job Katy. Always look forward to you new additions...
Well done.
I like this choice!!
you play beautifully - with infectious enthusiasm - than you!
I love Celtic music
Good job 😍
Excellent tune to play along hyar in Southern MD this AM! Yes, I have heard the 6th part. Never in a session. Not sure if it "tells" the story any better. I think you answered the question I had: Re the drum source. Hyar in the swamps, its hard to find a decent bodhran beat to play against; a metronome doesnt cut it.
Class!
Thank you so much! ^_^
Wow😮
Excelente tu manera de ejecutar en el violín 😀!!
IS INCREDIBLE!,YOUR MUSIC IS VERY BEAUTIFUL,I WANT MORE OF THAT CONTINUEDO SO :3
Well done, Katy. Had to smile at your saying you usually heard the Butterfly as a slow piece. I've pretty much only heard it from harp players on fire. :) I liked Kid on the Mountain. I've not heard it before, and it does go well with the Butterfly. Thanks!
Thank you Katy! You inspire me to play it on harmonica)
You maKE ME SMILE KATY!
Yay! Thank you for watching and listening! : D
i love this tunes. please come to BALI island
Awesome
I m a Irishman your incredible, you can play for me anytime, omg!beautiful!wow!

Amazing Katy , really awsome! The Butterfly is one my favorite Irish tunes, its special for me, the first Song I learn on the Violin was the Butterfly. But The first time I heard was by Mairéad Nesbitt the fabulous Fiddler of Celtic Woman.( Sorry my English is bad haha, naturally Im from Brazil.)
Wow this is beautiful Katy! You have an amazing talent :)
u are magic when you play xxx
I love you and your musicstyle
Very nice! I had learned the Butterfly a while back, forgot how much I liked playing it. I have to get work on that one again :)
Thank you! The Butterfly is such a fun tune! ^_^ I hope you have fun practicing! =)
I have sometimes played whistle/recorder at sessions and all I can think is THERE'S NO WHERE TO BREATHE! hahaha I love both these slip jigs, and slip jigs in general. You did a beautiful job!! You literally didn't miss a beat/note! These are both more suited to instruments that don't require breath to support the sound ....at least at this speed haha!
Thanks for this video!
Thank you! =) I've always been amazed at musicians who play instruments that require their breath! :o I've tried to play whistle and flute and such, but holy cow! It's so hard to control my breathing without feeling light-headed and sleepy and/or running out of breath. Tunes like this must be impossible! :S Kid on the Mountain especially -- that one keeps going and going and going lol! Thank you for your nice comment! ^_^
Hi Katy thanks your lovely like your music lol Paul x x ❤😎
Thank you for listening, Paul! =)
Hi Katy again. Another feast for the eyes and ears! You play so well, choose such lovely settings to play in, and choose such beautiful apparel.
You have amazing dress sense!
Thank you, Peter! I'm glad you liked the video! ^_^ I really like clothes lol -- but I think I have too many clothes... But life is short, so might as well aim to wear pretty things. =)
thankssssssss
I really like your videos
Me encanto
Hi Katy - As you said, "It has a bit of a "call and response" vibe, which seems to be kind of rare with a lot of these Irish instrumental tunes." I absolutely agree! I'm looking forward to playing it on my concertina at near tempo speed in which you are playing it on the violin, but with fewer parts. Unlike the "Skye Boat Song," however, "The Butterfly, and The Kid on the Mountain" will take a lot more practice for me on the violin...a lot more practice! And even then, I’ll never be able to get it to your level of proficiency and timing. Such is life! 😱 You, on the other hand, play it so effortlessly.
And you said, "I usually hear The Butterfly played fairly slowly with lots of lilting slides and ornamentation." As for me, Katy, I plan to play it that way on my diatonic harmonica. 😉
Happy fiddling! 😊 🎻♫
Thank you so much! These tunes would sound really cool on a concertina! =) I'm sure you'll be able to master them! : D Tempos are always tricky to set... I never really know what speed to go, but I have been learning that slower is almost always better than faster! =) I've never heard them played on a harmonica! That would be neat! ^_^ Happy practicing! =)
You're welcome Katy. 😊 🎻♫
So beautiful! I was wondering how old you were when you started playing, because I love this instrument and I hope I’m not too late to join in on learning it!
It's never late!! I hope you've already started during this time!
From a beginner violinist 😊
I love these, I haven't ever heard them before! Could you please put the sheet music up on your website? I would love to try and play it myself :) Thanks :)
Thank you! I'll try to work on writing out the sheet music soon! =)
Hay Katy, awesome video and tunes as usual! Keep them coming! Wish you uploaded more often but I understand if you're too busy. We can't be too greedy now can we :)

It's a red-letter day when Katy releases a new video!
Thank you for watching and listening! : D
I love you ! my english is bad, this is all i can say :)
You are very good
🌹🌹🌹🌅
Hi, I just wanted to encourage you to continue what you do as a violonist by subscribing with a little "hey you're great, go on, you've done a great job !" but it's maybe a bit too short and doesn't express what I'd really like to tell you haha (even if it's totally true). I like your channel because you don't look like someone who says "hey I'm the best, look how I play violin guys", it's kind of magic when I hear and watch your videos, you really look passionated by what you do, you sound like someone who's pure hearted and kind of innocent too and it's very refreshing compared to too many people who use violin on youtube nowadays.
Well I should stop here or I'll write a book but just remember that you're really good and (as a big fan of Ireland too) just continue to do your best and stay yourself you're perfect as you are ! ;)
The Butterfly is t he basis of Tegernako, a song by Eluveitie.
I just love that Celtic tune , Katy what is the tuning on Your fiddle , I use dead man tuning for a lot of My Irish Celtic music GDGD , I'm from West Virginia and about 85% of My Kin Folk are Irish and from the Old Ierland We play a lot of Celtic Folk songs and Hymns .
Hi :) I really love what you do! I listen to your tunes very often and I would like to purchase some of them! Is there any website where I can get your music? Please let me know! :)
Hi Katy ... another beautiful video! Lovely tunes. Had never heard the term "slip jig", but then again I don't know anything about music except I love listening to it ... especially when very well played. Is that a man made waterway behind you? You always choose the prettiest places to do your wonderful videos. Hope you have a restful and interesting weekend.
Upyahgurlyah!!!
at about 2:00 the notes you were hitting sounded like trumpets :) i put this on my mp3
😍😍😍👍👍👍😘😘😘
👏👏👏👏👏👏
I think you should really play Parson's Farewell. I think you'll enjoy playing that.
Nice playing Katy. How many violin bow do you have? You play very good. Nice
Adoro como interpretas...desearia q m enseñaras
How can you play that fast? wow! I am learning the second one and I play it to slowly it doesn't seem the same one XD
I recently started playing the violin but because of the situation I'm in I couldn't continue lessons. I've been trying to speed up my fiddles but I can't and I can't figure out why!! Do you have any advice?
I have seen the second with another title.
hey i play violin but only classical. im trying to get started with some fiddle pieces, do you have any tips for playing the fiddle pieces faster amd sounding good etc. ?
thanks, and you are amazing!!
Thank you!! :) Perhaps this video might help a little! ua-cam.com/video/dseM0f-68KI/v-deo.html
the trick to swapping from classical to fiddle music is to practice slow, if you can do it perfectly slow, you can begin to speed it up a little at a time - if you start messing up, make sure you can actually do it and do it well slower first. That way you're getting muscle memory down doing it well :) if you keep attempting to go faster (but not practicing mistakes) you'll discover that your muscle memory will allow you to go faster the more you do. A lot of time fiddle music will allow you to go faster just because it's so much fun to go fast - meaning the only thing to do is get the tactics down. As far as sounding good, try to think of how you would 'express' the tune. I've noticed everyone's fiddle sounds a little different, so practicing how you'd express the phrases helped me the most. For example does it sound better if you bow up or bow down, or what happens if your slur it together? exploring the music is half the fun - especially with fiddling. Best of luck!
