    The Seattle Seahawks Quarterback Geno Smith is having one of the most shocking seasons in recent memory. After taking a 7 year hiatus from starting in the NFL, he’s made an unprecedented resurgence and is playing at a top 5 QB level. Not only that, but the Seahawks are firmly in playoff consideration, and have rebuilt their franchise around the hopes and dreams of.. Geno Smith. How on earth is Geno playing like this and how have the Seahawks aided him in doing so? This week’s episode uses the all-22 coaches film to analyze Seattle Seahawks Quarterback Geno Smith.

    I compare Geno’s year to the year Rodgers came to play NFL-football after Favre. The dude is fresh; he hasn’t taken any major injuries because of his backup role over half of his career. He was always a good player in college. The dude not only matured but he MATURED his mentality when playing the game. He doesn’t have to zip the ball for 60 yards. He doesn’t have to scramble for 20 yards. He just needs to control the tempo of the game with his mental maturity. Good for GENO!

    As you eluded too around 2:30, Geno Smith always executes the play within structure when he can.
    Thats why the playmakers for Seattle have been more highlighted. It's been easier for Shane Waldron to scheme, because he knows his QB is going to read the defense exactly as coached.
    Smith has always had the talent, he just now has pieces around him built for stability and success.

    • @Smooth258
      @Smooth258 Рік тому +1

      So basically he is Kirk Cousins or Derek Carr. That’s great but it has its ceiling. Seahawks fans can get frustrated with past offenses, but until the Seahawks exceed those past offenses in wins and points for a full season it won’t matter.

    • @dallasccooper
      @dallasccooper Рік тому +17

      To say he is basically Kirk Cousins or Derek Carr is incredibly disingenuous.
      Geno Smith is top 10 in EPA on third downs throughout the season. Both of those other qb's are not in the top 14.
      Geno, has a higher arm talent level than both of those quarterbacks. Look at the film, the throws that he is making have been on the money, even when under pressure he has performed well.

      @@dallasccooper Good way to put it. Cousins shrinks when he has to make a big throw and would take the easier short pass (despite what big numbers may say in the game logs). Geno's poise even in structured situations when the pocket is closing when making a completion has been a huge boon. Not to mention he can pass under center so the timely run plays off play action when Walker III finds an opening can turn to big gains. And of course he's shown to be great off structure as well with his ability to read and scramble if he needs to. If Geno's hit his ceiling now then that is pretty great considering he's got the best trait of the QBs who are great on structure but the added mobility with the talents to hit in the middle of the field.

    One thing easily noticeable about Geno Smith compared to Russell Wilson is that he utilizes tight ends a lot more in the passing game.

    • @Smooth258
      @Smooth258 Рік тому +7

      Has anyone ever actually confirmed this by the number of TE receptions per game? Geno is probably utilizing tight ends differently, but maybe not “more.” Having Fant also helps.

      @dallasccooper Рік тому +10

      Defenses also aren't selling out to stop the deep passing game.
      The Seahawks Russell Wilson passing game was always quick game (stick/slant routes) or deep sideline shots as those were conducive to Wilson's skillset.
      Smith doesn't have the weaknesses however that Wilson did. Therefore defenses can't sell out to only stop certain concepts.
      Smith has allowed the Seahawks offense to blend incredibly well.

    I really hope Geno continues to play at this level and have success with the Seahawks. I admit that I was on the very wrong "pick up Baker or Jimmy G" train before the season after the Russ trade. But I also think it's looking increasingly like this isn't a fluke year for Geno, and he could be the guy going forward. Usually if a team/player is going to have a fluke year, they start hot and then begin to show cracks and struggle as the season progresses. But that is the opposite of what Seattle has done, they started a little rough and have continued to look better and better. I don't know if there is a Superbowl run in the cards for this season. But if Geno and this offense can keep firing on all cylinders, Seattle with a couple good draft picks will be DANGEROUS next season. Of course, the Seahawks have been underestimated all year, and weirder things have happened in the playoffs and Superbowl, so who knows what could happen this year at this point.

      I honestly was a person that was kind of disappointed they weren't able to draft Ridder and have him compete or grow behind Smith/Lock. But I think the best thing that could've happened to them is by far Lock missing time with Covid. Morbid comment perhaps I know, but when you look at some teams that struggled far more out of the gate and let it persist, they sat their best players. Geno and his offense had to play overall and that ended up allowing them to force the issue realizing hey, we aren't playing around our players. We're scheming for them. I dont think theyd be in that position without those crucial snaps.

    Interesting to note about Geno's refined passing now considering he didn't get that much reps as a back up. But I think him getting label as a scrambly back up who can't read the field probably hurt him more because we've seen so many other QBs in recent years who have that similar trait get multiple chances as a starter and never peak to combining their ability to process, throw and move in the pocket. Then again this modern NFL seems to be more built for these talents along with the best case scenario of their success for being key offensive pieces. Mahomes and Lamar Jackson are the known success stories but a new crop of guys like Jalen Hurts, Kyler Murray and a few others are finding success with play callers who want to use their arms and legs in the passing game. Geno peaked at the right time nearly a decade later and under a coaching staff who knows how to use him best.

But clearly the Seahawks were right to dump that contract commitment.

      @t4d0W Рік тому

      If this is peak Geno then this is the best case scenario to pay him a decent long term contract while trying to audition for a young QB prospect the next 2-3 years. To get this kind of production for a near 10 year vet where not many young QBs can perform like this within their first year is absolute value. Also make sense since the other offensive stars are paid for (Lockett, Metcalf), the O-line needs new talent and big money on defense was shelled out (Jamal Adams). So its a way to balance salaries in the short term.

      There were analysts that liked Geno and the Seahawks outlook in the pass game in the preseason. Much in part because the OC gets to actually call what they want (like passes up the middle) and being able to sell play action with a QB who can at least read and move. Which of course makes Pete happy cuz he can still run the ball with his stud of a RB in Kenneth Walker.

  • @Smooth258
    @Smooth258 Рік тому +2

    I think Geno will have a Kirk Cousins like career. Good for him.

    • @t4d0W
      @t4d0W Рік тому

      And I know people will take that as a slight but I think he's a 'better' version of that kind of QB because he's got zip in his arm AND he can move his legs. Which makes the play action for the Seahawks a great feature because not only can Geno execute and run if he has to, but Kenneth Walker can also gash defenses if they play them light boxes at the line.

  • @Daniel-rj2mf

    I disagree that Geno turned the Hawks from a joke to a playoff team, every real Hawks fan knew we were 1 good qb and good defensive coaching away from the playoffs. Where I would agree is that Geno is the QB nobody thought he was.

  • @dabbingtoast7743
    @dabbingtoast7743 Рік тому +2

    It really does just seem like Geno just runs the fucking offense as Waldren intended. Not a bad strategy when your throwing the ball to Tyler Locket and DK Metcaff.

    • @t4d0W
      @t4d0W Рік тому

      Def reinforces that Pete did want to fully embrace that new direction with his play caller from the Rams. But he couldn't cuz all the stuff Waldron wanted to do, Russ was not willing to execute. Now Geno has got himself the starting spot and hopefully he never has to surrender it in the near future to a dude who been given a chance and is not a true QB1 starter in Drew Lock.
