- It's time to open up about my journey discovering I had a nerve sheath tumor (a schwannoma) in the back of my right knee and recovering from the surgery. This was a REALLY difficult time in my life, and I wasn't prepared for the diagnosis or the immediate outcome of the surgery. Yeah, I've got a gnarly scar and the back of my leg isn't pretty (it's taken years to come to terms with the way my leg looks), but I'm proud of how far I've come. I never want to take walking for granted ever again!
Everyone's experience with this kind of thing is different, but I wanted to share my story and encourage anyone going through something similar to hang in there. Things will get better. And please don't be afraid to ask for help when you need it. 💜

I’m glad I came across this video. I just had my tumor removed out my knee last Wednesday. This was my 3rd knee surgery. Out of all 3 this have been the most painful recovery. I’m so glad that you’re doing better🙏🏽❤️

Thank you so much for sharing this. An MRI just uncovered a (likely) nerve sheath tumor in my calf last week that has probably been there for 10+ years. This is incredibly helpful as I start the treatment journey.

You were incredibly brave and determined in making your recovery happen. You dealt with severe pain before and after the surgery and fought back with focus and commitment -- amazing commitment. So proud of you!!!

I can relate to navigating unfriendly terrain with a knee immobilizer and/or crutches. I navigated Penn State's main campus -- that is some fun the Central Pennsylvania winter! -- as well as Manhattan in both.
I really love that you were in a hip hop dance troupe! Oh the things that we discover!
Aww, thank you so much! I was determined to take back some sort of control in my life. I hated feeling helpless and I wanted to get my life back to a place where I was happy again. And hip hop was SO much fun. It was student run group that started a few years before I got to Trinity and as far as I know they're still going strong!
Oh my goodness, I can't even imagine navigating snow on crutches. That sounds TERRIBLE! I'm sorry to hear you've had the misfortune of experiencing crutches and the knee immobilizer. I hope neither of us ever have to experience either of those ever again!
I’m 17 and just diagnosed with a tumor in my knee I’m getting it tested for cancer before we discuss removing it I had the same situation it was believed to be a torn tindent but going in to hear that it was a tumor was like a bomb she’ll but my tumor is massive and has torn my leg to shreds it’s good to hear I’m not the only one that has gone through this or is going through this it makes it a little less scary I’m still awaiting my results before I get to discuss removal I’m just scared of the after math I already can’t move my leg so I will probably end up with nerve damage because the tumor destroyed my knee bone no matter what happens I’m going to lose my knee at the very least I’ll get a metal plate because the tumor has destroyed so much I found your video very helpful in my situation and very uplifting I’m sorry for how hard it was to readjust to your normal life
Oh my goodness, I'm so sorry to hear that you're going through this. That's scary stuff. It sounds like the recovery will be a long (and probably rough) journey. You're not alone and it's going to get better. The body is pretty amazing and the physical therapy you'll likely go through will be REALLY helpful and important. I have been diagnosed with the same thing. Been getting on and off discomfort for years, but now the pain is pretty much constant. I’m still able to do normal day to day activities, but pain is always there. My Neurosurgeon has recommended removal of the schwannoma. I have no idea what to expect. I’m glad i came across your video, thank you for sharing your story.

Hi...I am a bit older than you but just had my surgery less than a week ago. You made me smile when you described your scar as mine is six inches long and as purple and thick as you described. My Schwannoma was in the nerve at the back of my thigh so the incision was basically from my butt cheek and down six inches. So sitting even now, five days later, is quite an experience.
The good news for me was that in order to get it out, they had to snip the nerve and then reattach it with a part from a cadaver (I am an outdoor and indoor cyclist so I hope that it was a former speed cyclist). So far I haven't had any issues like you described with nerve damage but I am still very early in my recovery.
Thanks for putting this video out there. I am sitting here wondering if I am glad or bummed that I didn't see it before my surgery. Either way, thanks for letting people know what they can possibly expect.
Curious how your recovery is going. My surgery is in a month, I also have a schwannoma in the sciatic nerve of my thigh, roughly in the middle of my thigh. I have no idea what to expect after the surgery, my tumor is roughly 2cm so relatively small, but it causes some radiating pain at times. How long did your operation take if I may ask and what symptoms did you have post-operation?
I was also diagnosed with Nerve shealth tumor. Got my tumor removed and had a 5 inches scar as bonus. My leg is stiff. My doctor advised to get another MRI to check if no tumor remain in my knee.
I always think Bucket and Sprout are fuzzy blankets or pillows until they move 🤣 thank you for sharing your story💜💜 you are one of the strongest people I know! I can’t believe you did the entire Insanity program so soon into recovery😱 lol! Also I loved all the throwback pictures and videos at Trinity🥰 I remember when I broke my foot freshman year I somehow managed to get piggy back rides up the stairs to class 🤣 god bless whoever I convinced to do that because whew 😅 hard enough doing on fully healed legs. Awww you are the sweetest! YOU are absolutely the strongest person I know. 💜 Man, I can't believe I did the whole program either. Definitely not the best decision, but I'm still proud of myself for doing it cause IT WAS SO HARD! I was so nostalgic going through all of those old pictures and videos - I wish we could go back and relive some of the best times there! And I'm jealous that you got piggy back rides up the stairs when you broke your foot! What a good idea and that sounds super fun 😂 Whoever gave you those piggy back rides is amaaaazing!

Yeah, I wish I had known what to expect with scars - I was shocked the neurosurgeon didn't say anything before the surgery! Hopefully this helps someone out there...

I just had a schwannoma removed form my ankle. I’m 2 weeks post op and can’t walk. I was needing this kind of hope that I will regain strength an be able to walk again
Thank you for your video. I’m two weeks post op and still can’t walk and dealing with burning pain in my foot. I had a 3cm Schwannowa removed from the sciatic nerve just behind my knee. It gave me hope to know it will heal because doctors made it sound like I would be up and running after a few days
I have a sciatic schwannoma aswell and need a surgery. My schwannoma is about 2cm. Curious how is your recovery these days?

I had removed a 2 centimeter nerve tumor in my left clavicle, the pain was horrible for months- even though I had no pain/symptoms before surgery-, but gradually the nerve recovered and after a year I was pain free. I have two more nerve tumors in my right leg, they cause me pain, the biopsy failed because the doctor did not get the right sample, since then my doctor monitors my tumors with MRIs every 6 months and now every year, he says there ir a risk of having permanent nerve damage.

I have 5/6 schwannoma’s around my knee, I’ve had an ACL reconstruction and an MPFL reconstruction as I was born without those ligaments 🤷🏻♂️ the sharp stabbing pains burning pains from these things are awful, it’s took over 3 years to get diagnosed with these schwannomas 🧐, my surgery is tomorrow so hopefully they can get them all out 🤞🏼highly rate your video!

I just found out I have a schwannoma tumor in my pelvis area. Now I realize that it has been the root of my sciatic nerve and lower back pain for the past couple years. I have a consult with a neurosurgeon in April.
I just had surgery to remove a tumour from behind my right knee that was on a nerve , it was the size of an egg. I'm walking with crutches now. Definitely super scary to hear. I had a biopsy done first and it was inconclusive so they decided surgery :(
Hi! How r u now and was it cancerous ?? Did they use any prosthetic after?
@Choco-je9yd hi, there I am walking just fine now, still have some nerve damage, but that was expected with the surgry I had to have ( I lost some nerves) , it was low-grade cancerous. I was fortunate enough to catch it early too so it did not spead so they just removed the tumor.

Thank you for your video! My MRI results show a 2cm peripheral nerve sheath tumor in the back of my right knee between the tibial and perineal nerve. I’ve known something was there for over a decade but never had imaging done until now because I began to have nerve tingling down the calf occasionally.
Was your tumor benign? The Dr is saying (without a biopsy) mine has to be benign because it’s been so for so long. He said if it was malignant it would’ve grown a lot more in 10-20yrs.

I have the same procedure coming up....were you given general anesthesia? Local? Nude under the gown? I'm freaking out about the surgery....specifically what will happen to me during the anesthesia.....all this will be happening to my body and I'm not even going to be in the room.
This sounds so similar to my son’s experience. Until we got the MRI results- never crossed our minds this could be a result. Surgery is scheduled for next week. Did you also experience a cold leg before surgery?

I have a 5 1/2 in scar from my first tumor removal. I have a tumor now that is 5cm long that was discovered 2 months ago after chronic pain
