  • Aaron, an avid runner from Delaware, was diagnosed at 29 with a spinal cord tumor pressing on his nerves. Surgery was necessary, but the risks were high, including paralysis and loss of the ability to run. Spine neurosurgeon Ali Bydon met with Aaron, and together, they chose to wait. Watch to find out why.

I had a spinal cord tumor that my nerve endings had wrapped. I was in terrible pain; had surgery but nerve endings were severed to remove as much of tumor as possible. The years since haven’t been easy, I can walk short distances; no feeling below my waist backside. No control over bladder . I am thankful that I have done as well as I have. Just wish the nerve endings hadn’t of wrapped the tumor. But I’m a Christian and I know that God has allowed me to walk. The doctor told me after learning to walk again that anyone else would be in a wheelchair. Praise my Jesus that I am still here years later. To you reading this never take walking for granted; our lives can change in a minute

So, I have had surgery last week. Removing a schwannoma from my spinal cord around l3. I found out in February this year. My life just stopped. Couldnt believe it and as soon as i found out what kind of surgery was needed i was so scared. Last week i was very scared going into surgery. I knew there was no choice by still had to drag myself in there. I was scared for complications and also the surgery itself. Now 1 week later, I feel better. It was a very tough surgery, and first 3 days were very hard. Walked on day 2, but my legs did not feel the same. Power and coordination were missing. Now after the 1st week I can say strength is coming back and coordination also. Still very tired from surgery. This will take those 4 to 6 weeks recovery. From anyone going trough this, keep up hope. It sure helps and go into surgrry being fit. I'll post an update in a few weeks.

Lee Castillo hi Lee, I was recently told that what I thought was a herniated disc for months, may have actually been a nerve sheath tumor in my L5-S1. The radiologist thinks it is a Schwannoma. I have had a long wait to get any answers but finally have an appointment with another neurosurgeon in two weeks. It’s good to hear a success story. Where was yours in your spine?

I'm 24, I'm in my last year of Law school and this January 2018 I had a spinal tumor removed from my L3 on my lumbar. I've always been an athlete, and prior to the surgery I hadn't been able to do much physical activity for around a year because of the pain the tumor caused me. It took about a full year for a doctor to diagnose the tumor. I walked less than 48hr after the surgery, and three months after the surgery I am in very good physical shape with the ability to run, jump, play soccer and do anything I please. I train my body regularly and work hard on getting myself to where I once was. I am and will forever be thankful to the people that study such a beautiful profession, keep a positive mindset.. always and no matter what.

In 1991 at 30 years old...they found a tumor on the base of my spine. They rushed, did surgery and I've been disabled since. I had to learn to walk again...among other things. I suffer with spinal headaches daily. It's been hell. My surgery was over 4 hours but they severed major nerves. I wish I had found a better surgeon. I can't run anymore...I walk slow. But...I'm alive!! :)

Two years ago, at 38, I was diagnosed with a schwannoma tumor. Before that, I experienced extreme leg pain that worsened over time, eventually causing me to scream at night. I tried everything from rehab to acupuncture before getting an MRI. Doctors found a strawberry-sized tumor in my L5 and immediately recommended surgery. I was terrified, as it was my first surgery. I can still recall the anxiety of staying up all night, thinking about my wife and two young kids.
On the day of surgery, I was very nervous, but having my dad take me to the hospital helped calm my nerves. The nurses reassured me that everything would be okay. I had checked my surgeon’s credentials weeks before and felt confident about the outcome.
The surgery lasted about 10 hours, and when I woke up, I remember saying, "I'm finished already!?” It was the best sleep I’d ever had, and I was ecstatic to move my legs. I spent about four nights in the hospital before going home. On the third day, getting in and out of bed was tough, but I pushed through.
About 1-2 weeks after surgery, I learned that the tumor was benign, which was a huge relief since not knowing was stressful. I fully recovered in 3-4 weeks and am now pain-free, able to live my life again. Before, I couldn’t do much and was heartbroken that I couldn’t play with my kids due to the pain.
Today is my birthday, and I just returned from my annual MRI check-up. The results showed no residual or recurrent tumors. I highly recommend the surgery if you're considering it.
If you have any questions, I'm happy to help. I watched countless UA-cam videos about the surgery when I was diagnosed, so I understand how you're feeling.
    God bless!🙏🏼

I had a spinal tumor the size of a peach wrapped around my nerves at the L4 and L5 and suffered with it for 3 years before I was diagnosed. My symptoms were an extreme fire like pain down both legs and couldn't walk more than a few feet without falling over. After my surgery I was in the hospital for a 4 days recovering and a week later I was walking around the house. The only Negative effects of surgery was my lower back muscles tightened up and numbness in my inner leg thigh. Other than that i consider myself lucky.

@Ilaria Brovini sorry for the late reply, I'm sorry you're going through this. I know firsthand what you're going through, it got so bad I didn't care about the risks as long as I could get some relief. But its a pretty common surgery and they always have to tell you that there's risks. But you could try putting a pillow between your legs when your in bed, and a warm bath helped me as well when it got too bad. You could also ask your doctor to try cortisone injections.
      I wish you luck

3 years ago I was diagnosed by a cystic schwannoma arising from spinal nerve sheath and then I was only 18 years old . Surgery was done after 4 months as the tumor was a little big so immediate surgery was required. After the surgery I lost my sensation in the thigh of my left leg and it's been 3 years after the surgery it don't heal and got a pain in the spinal . But luckily the tumor was arising from the L2-L3 nerves so I can walk freely and can run also .

Now in my 50s and seven spine surgeries, I have to use a cane. I still have a lot of pain and I think it’s because I have schwannomatosis. I have been experiencing this severe backpain from time to time for a decade before I was diagnosed last year with schwannoma at L1. I was advised to take surgery but due to financial constraint and we can not afford the surgery. A month ago the pain suddenly resourface and it is much worse that before. Now the tumor doubled its size in just span of a year. Now I am considering to undergo surgery if we can come up with the amount needed. Here in our country neurosurgeries are not covered by health card so it is really difficult to be tested and undergo surgery. There might be more individuals who have this condition but because of economical situation they can not afford it.
I know God will make a way for my surgery. And I am looking forward to that day.

Wanted to comment to possibly help someone out. My pain started off mid back more on the left side. It was all of a sudden that it started hurting me. Excruciating pain while I was laying on couch. I had not done anything to hurt my back like lifting anything or falling or laying in a weird position. Pain hit and I could not fall asleep. 3 hours, a back massage, and using the heat pad is what it took for me just to go to sleep. Pain went on and on and on. Symptoms basically lined up with kidney stones believe it or not. Went and got urinalysis. Everything came back great. Then x ray. Everything looked great. Then CT scan. They said they found something in t12 section of spine that needed further imaging. I assumed herniated discs and I researched all about it. Sounded just like what I was having. Being a truck driver, this was bad news for my career because I didn’t want disc problems my whole life on and off. Went and got the MRI and they called me saying that I actually have a spinal growth (I’m sure they said this so it doesn’t sound scary). So now I wait. The pain is terrible. Only thing that helps me is BC powder and I know those aren’t good for us when used long term. There’s times it hurts so bad (mainly after hard work or a lot of physical activity) that I can’t even hardly breath or walk or talk. I can feel the pain wrap around my left side down to below my navel. When pain is real bad all I can do is make noises like moaning and groaning. I guess when I take deep breaths my lungs swell and cause pressure on the nerves or something. Same with stomach; if I eat too much or too fast, same pain I guess from stomach being a little more swollen. Legs and arms are perfectly fine, no problems or pain. Praying for everyone going through this. It’s no fun especially when you have to work through it all. Boss man doesn’t understand the pain. I wake up in the middle of the night and stay awake sometimes for hours because of the pain

@@andrianacheah9224 thanks for your advice! But since this comment of mine two years ago, the tumor has resolved itself and the doctors were actually surprised when they went back to check on how it was doing and they found that it was gone, all that was left on the image was scar tissue where you could tell it had been previously. I’m glad I don’t have to deal with that anymore but feel terrible for those like you that are still dealing with it. Peace, positivity, and prosperity to you my friend ❤️ ☮️ 🙏

My main concern is my nerves repairing themselves. They have been compressed from the tumor on my spine . lifting weights and working out is a hobby of mine so if I don’t regain strength in my heels and feet I will be so heartbroken . Went in for chest x-ray due to persistent coughing ( coughing is long gone). I have NO side effects, no pain of any sort. Now I have upper back pain and there is a lump at the top of my spine. Not sure if it is a bone sticking out or not because it is rock solid. I’m picking it okay since I had a chest x Ray but I’m still going to see my doctor about it next week.

hi i had a schwannoma tumor in my t7-t8 thoracic spine and 4 years post surgery, but yesterday i was diagnosed with tarlov cysts in my sacral spine. i was wondering did you have a constant mri follow ups? because i just had my mri done again because my lower back was hurting bad and sending sharp pain on my foot, shin and sometimes having severe cramps on my calves. just wondering how was your recovery and how are you now?

@@zharlenebanzuelo My last mri followup showed only a collection of spinal fluid. It wasn't terrible and could have been more risky to try to fix as long as symptoms were mild. I should be about due for another MRI.

Has anyone ever experienced facial numbness with a benign tumor on your lower back? Its right next to my spine and the doctors said it could be pressing on a nerve connecting to my face.

    Hello sir
My father is hearing some kind of noise inside his right ear,so we took a scan, the result
( Right ear: moderate to profound sloping sensorineural hearing loss form 500Hz to 8kHz (mixed component at 1kHz) with normal hearing at 250Hz
Left ear : hearing sensitivity within normal limits from 250Hz to 4kHz with mild hearing loss at 8kHz ) but he has no Diabetes.
    And again I took M R I scan also
    The result
(Considering the clinical history most likely diagnosis is an acoustic schwannoma of right side)
So what should I Do Doctor?
    I'm waiting your reply?

It has been 14 weeks since i got spinal tumor(Schwannoma) removal surgery. Tumor was at l2-l3 region. Now i am feeling constant dull pain in lower left back but sometime it goes towards my buttocks and leg as well. Is it normal after surgery and will get better with time? Or, is this chronic condition? I am really worried and in pain.

I have similar symptoms, my right leg is numb, weak, i cant move my ankle or control my entire leg. The pain worsens at night. My lower back hurts so much. My xray showed a curvature in my spine. I was asked to do a ct scan but i cannot afford it. Every day i live with the fear that i might become paralysed one of these days.
