    Totally right. In nature, river fish are getting a 100% water change every 5 seconds. Even in the African lakes the water is constantly being flushed and pushed through. I do massive water changes every week in my fishroom sometimes twice a week.

    One thing on this, I currently do two 10% changes a week and it seems to be keeping nitrates down for now.
    My issue is I have soft tap water and prepping 200L of water to put back in the tank would mean I need a load more buckets etc and a whole load of buffer.
    Also, in my case particularly a swing in PH and/or GH/KH would be likely as it’s difficult to get them perfect over larger amounts, just about cracked it for 10% but i do tweak it as it still goes up or down 1 every now and then.
    Just looking for your thoughts on my problem with big water changes for my Africans

    Dang these cichlids are so colorful and awesome. They are nicer than alot of saltwater fish. I have my 120 set up with a dozen juvenile peacocks. Started the tank on Christmas eve and added Cycle for 3 days. Added the fish on the 4th day. So far, no Ammonia, low nitrites, and low nitrates. Did a 25% change a few days ago and am testing at almost 0 nitrite and even lower nitrates. The fx6 is doing a great job circulating and the fish seem happy. I would love to share pics but i don’t have social media. I may start uploading some videos so y’all can see. I am glad i got back into this. Last time i had a fish tank i was a teenager, didn’t even know there was a nitrogen cycle. I am 39 now and am amazed at all there is to learn.

    Why do some aquarium shops say not to do big water change because it shocks the fish, last week I did 50% and I noticed my fish became very aggressive but not sure the water was the cause

    • @KaveManAquatics
      @KaveManAquatics  2 роки тому

      Aquarium shops tend to tell you the absolute safest advice. That doesnt mean its the most beneficial advice. Big water changes remove more nitrates. When you have a heavy nitrate amount in between water changes, removing more of it is more beneficial than not.

    • @KaveManAquatics
      @KaveManAquatics  3 роки тому +1

      You can add real drift wood, it will lower your PH, GH, and KH....but it may leach tannins and darken your water color. You can avoid this by boiling the wood for about 20-30 minutes and then let it soak in a bucket for about 24 hours....that will help get MOST of the tannins out.

    • @dieyoung8259
      @dieyoung8259 3 роки тому

      I live on the third floor of a non elevator apartment building. I boiled my driftwood and soaked it and had tannins for way to long. I didn't have any fish so I was actually growing plants and cycling my water at the same time. I now use bottled water after removing about %40 of my water. Its about $1 dollar here in Chicago and I grab a couple of bottles every time I go into the grocery store. Boil it as suggested but let it sit in a bucket and change water as long as your patience will allow you.

    The key to huge water changes is to use water that has been aged. Not adding water straight from your tap. So if you have another tank about the same size, fill it and let it sit for a few days. If you use water from your tap, you will use a dechlorinator. The byproduct from using a dechlorinator is amonia.

I have a 100 litre tank which I bought and set up at the start of December and added a certain substance to it so the fish could could straight in, I have two Blackmoores living in freshwater, I have a filter that came with the tank and it has been running since then. I have noticed the last week or so brown algae building up around the tank I have researched this and I have found on some sites that this is normal for a new tank when cycling. I do regular water changes each 50% i would say and each the brown algae keeps coming back. I have a gravel cleaner and I am removing all of the waste each time and everytime i test the water the charts so there is still nitrate and on the chart it says it needs a water change but this never seems to decrease
    Is there any other thing I can do to stop the brown algae growth or will this go away its self. I just want the fish to be harmed or even killed
    Thank you in advance ☺

      You may need to do bigger water changes, or more frequent water changes if you're still showing high levels of nitrates. Just keep in mind that you will always have nitrates in your tank.
      For the brown algae you have to starve it of what it wants, light and nitrates.

    I used to be so stupid thinking adding back water from the evaporated was doing something while of course harming my fish now I do do 80% and I love it, I tend to be a little heavy handed when feeding so my nitrates are usually high but everything else pretty much stays in order I have matrix in my canister and hob how often should I replace the matrix?

      Never. Keep that same media (and all the BB on it) for the life of your fish! 😁
