So True! The QUALITY of her voice is sublime. None of the other singers have her beautiful tone, pitch, control, phrasing and ability to stick to the music without changing the song, like so many R and B artists (and mostly Black artists do). Folks don’t know the difference between ACTUAL POWER and LOUD. She has the power, but not the LOUDNESS, yet when others sing her songs, they don’t sound better than she. I like her for she is not as dry as a lot of white women, but doesn’t deviate like black singers do. That’s why Masser liked her; she owns it, but sticks to the music. She is versatile.
My Dear Diana ROSS>> ITS 1964...AS a young boy of 9, I thought she was the most beautiful woman I had ever seen, in front of my familys' Philco Cabinet 1953 B&W TV...we were watching the Ed Sullivan Show with the Supremes....Sunday evenings before bedtime. My Grandmother saying, "I just know he is going to marry a "Negro" woman and a singer like her, can you imagine that? He is much too attracted, and look at him dance! ( In our home, dancing was not permitted, due to our religion)
Listen this Detroit girl can sing like a angel and she is one beautiful woman and I know because I am a 62 year old white boy from Detroit and I as a young boy wanted to marry her what a woman flat out Pete knows
I was 15 years old when I brought 'Surrender " it was awesome. Have you heard the unreleased "I'll come " from the same album. IMO it should have replaced "I'm a winner ". I play "Baby it's me" at least twice a month with stiff Dywars.
I see the debates back and forth about which artist recorded the best version of this song. My vote goes to this version by Ms. Ross. She has such a distinctive, beautiful voice, impeccable phrasing and the arrangement surrounding her is outstanding. Melissa Manchester released the single, which was somewhat successful, but I like her version least of all I have heard. My second choice after Ms. Ross would be the interpretation by Jane Oliver.
Lol.... Even.Liza Minnelli's versions is better than Diane's and Liza's version here in UA-cam is "Live" not a Diane Ross studio "synthesized, filtered and voice enhanced" rendition!!!!!!!
We all know your opinions, and we are also well aware that your opinions are formed to support some long-held hatred toward Ms. Ross that is as inexplicable as it is unfortunate. So, we disagree. By the way, I have seen Ms. Ross in concert many times during her career, and in concert (as you can see also on UA-cam), she sounds like the recordings -- more so than any artist I have ever seen. So, your allegation that her recorded voice is substantially changed and improved is absurd. It is odd that you continue repeating the same accusations -- all easily disproved -- when each comment you post seems to increase respect and admiration for Ms. Ross. I watched her on the AMAs a couple of weeks ago, and at their first sighting of Ms. Ross stood and cheered for a lengthy standing ovation. I also listened to interviews with a number of attending artists, all of whom were in awe of her and credited her with paving the way for their success -- just as Taylor Swift did in her speech. It seems that you continue to row upstream against a strong current in a boat full of factual holes.
Before you started writing comments about her, Ms.. Ross was a legend and a superstar. Because of you, she is now also viewed more positively because she is victimized by such nonsense. So, you add to her popularity each day. Thanks.
You forget that we can all see each other's comments and responses. You are not very popular on You Tubes because of your unfair, vulgar comments, and most of your responses suggest that you should stop doing what you are doing. I once did the same. But, you clearly enjoy Ms. Ross' singing. Why else would you spend more time on her pages than anywhere else. In addition, as I have told you, I think each of your comments adds to her fan base. For your information, when men have more than one woman sex partner, they are lauded as studs and sex symbols. But, when women have more than one, some call them whores and make derogatory remarks about their lives. Those who do that are misogynists, who feel -- without any reason -- superior to women and entitled to judge them. I seldom see a comment from you in which you do not use that tactic -- and you continue to use it despite being advised by almost everyone that it is offensive. It is worse than just offensive. You also make derogatory remarks about the children of Ms. Ross, and that shows you to be a person without honor, class or dignity. Despite your claims to dislike Ms. Ross, you are always around. Like too many others, you believe that criticizing her gives you some visibility and public attention, and I guess it does. But, it is certainly not flattering to you. Still, some like to use the celebrity of others for their own purposes, and Ms. Ross has had to deal with that sort of thing throughout her career. Her approach -- and it has proven to be the right one -- has been to never comment or engage the critics, because she knows it only gives them attention and that is what they/you want. When I have time, I am delighted to engage you. It is an opportunity to set the record straight, since most of your comments are as inaccurate as they are hateful. While you are making the You Tube experience less pleasant for others, Ms. Ross has been given Lifetime Achievement Awards by BET, the Soul Train Foundation, the Grammys, and the Songwriter's Association. She has also received a Kennedy Center Award -- one of the most, if not the most, prestigious awards an entertainer in any field can be given. A couple of weeks ago, an appearance on the AMAs resulted in an immediate and lengthy standing ovation the minute she was introduced. At the show, Taylor Swift (on the show) and several others (in interviews) paid tribute to Ms. Ross for her amazing career accomplishments -- which now include being named by the Guinness Book of World Records as the most successful female recording artist of all time -- and for paving the way for them. All this disappoints you, I know. That's why I enjoy reminding you of it. You, on the other hand, still spend most of your time, holding and expressing a 50 year-old grudge. I feel sad for you, but still will not ignore your ridiculous comments, if I ca n set the record straight.
Yeah, this reminds me of the "I Will Always Love You" WHITNEY vs Dolly Parton (who also wrote the song) debate...but COME ON...2 bars into either song and U KNOW WHAT TIME IT IS...no shade, it IS what it IS!!!
The one that made this song her own and a "Billboard Pop Chart Hit" is the one and only Melissa Manchester. This was a cover on an album by Diane Ross, adequate at best. Is a great tribute to the talents of Carole Bayer Sager and Ms.Melissa Manchester, never mind Ms. Jane Olivor, the one that live, in the 1980's Cabaret Circuit and by her own recording (both available here in UA-cam) also made it a "HIT"
Sorry, this song artistically belongs to Melissa Manchester and Jane Olivor who both made that song a hit in the late 1970's Ms Melissa Manchester as a Pop Hit and Ms. Jane Olivor in the Cabaret's Circuit in the early 1980's. It was very nice of Diane to include it in her album and give it her TOUCH!
JUST ADD THE LETTER "a" ....to tw...t.....!!!!!!!!!....I THINK ONE GETS MY DRIFT...!!!!!!...MAKES ONE WISH THAT BIRTH CONTROL WAS RETRO-ACTIVE....!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.
LOL....graham simpson if your artistic evaluation tells you that this version of "Come In From The Rain" by Diane Ross is superior to the ORIGINAL VERSION PERFORMED BY MS. MELISSA MANCHESTER of JANE OLIVOR'S 1980's version both available here in UA-cam you do need a LOBOTOMY! You haven't got a clue!
Of all the versions of this song for me this is the weakest, the less interesting, the most emotionless. It’s as if reading the lyrics from a lead sheet. Coupled with the changes of the minor chords it loses its heart. Her thin voice doesn’t lend itself to a song like this one which usually invokes such melancholy when done by better singers.
this version is fine, yet the truth is it PALES, deeply, in comparison to that of the 'Captain and Tennille', THAT is the signature, hall of fame rendition of all time. Diana sounds like a high school kid by comparison.
LOL.....WTF is an "interpurator "? Do I detect "illiteracy"? The "interpreter" of this version (Diane Ross) is a farce and a poor facsimile of the original. (Melissa Manchester)
Sorry theSUPREMEscene, you know I love your work. But for anyone who wants to hear the best versions of "Coming From The Rain"? Without a doubt, Jane Olivor in the 1980's & Melissa Manchester in the 1970's, this version is adequate but not up to the level of the vocals of the other two. This is "The Alvin & The Chipmunks" version!
Lol….Arlene The Bulldyke, this Album filler, the most popular? This was never released as a single, as Motown/Berry Gordy knew it would never charted like Melissa Manchester, the "real" most popular! You're "tripping" on chicken shit!!!!!
This version is lovely. It is not supposed to compared. Ross added her touch to it and made this version her own. Boy, TWTR4EVER you're all over YT bashing Ross? Sheesh!
FYI- miss birdsong…..This version compared to Jane Olivor's and the ORIGINAL, Melissa Manchester doesn't compare, Diane's version, just like her? "INCONSEQUENTIAL"! I will expose the truth about Diane Ross untill the end of my days or until she makes amends and comes clean on her transgressions against THE SUPREMES! I SPIT ON THE GROUND SHE WALKS ON!
So much wasted energy...tragic, really. I have heard both versions and I agree that the other two versions are "better" but Diana's version is not bad it is good, not better.
I guess you have never heard Diana sings live ? Although this is in the studio... which at the very least make her sound listenable. She is far from a good singer, in fact, she in not what anyone (with an ear) would consider a good singer. I saw her in concert in 83 with my sister (who was a fanatic), she should have been arrested when she came off the stage for impersonating a singer. She was awful. A star she is... no question. A singer.. LOL !
on a level this is true. She isn't a good singer. She has a way to use her vulnerability and femininity to capture a ballad and make it sound "pretty". She is that exactly a "pretty" songstress. She never had a real "voice" She is a manufactured and groomed black Barbie Doll. No depth whatsoever. I admire her work ethic and drive and she took what was not much actual attributes and packaged herself into a world class superstar, But actual talent well in business sure she has that down.
One of the very best songs Diana Ross sings. The whole album was nice.
Yes I agree, this was probably my fav from this album. She also did a beautiful job on TOO SHY TO SAY.I wish she would do these songs in her concerts.
I always thought Diana Ross was very underrated as an accomplished vocalist; she kills this. Her voice really suits this song.
So True! The QUALITY of her voice is sublime. None of the other singers have her beautiful tone, pitch, control, phrasing and ability to stick to the music without changing the song, like so many R and B artists (and mostly Black artists do). Definitely the best version!!! 👍🤩
Baby It's Me was a fabulous album in the 70's very underrated.
Forgot how much I love this song... brought a tear to the eye
She can tell the story of the song and let you feel it. All the while enjoying her voice and mastery of it.
Absolutely she sings beautiful, look beautiful and connects with the audience like no other performer. Being at her concerts are magical ❤
This is the best version by far. Diana is sublime on this . Her vocal is soft and beautiful
WOW, what a great song. If only people could still write songs like this one.
Beautiful lyrics and Beautiful Diana Ross!!
I wish this was my baby inviting me back in. I can hear her in this song and the love I have for her will never die! I love you Kathy!!!
This song is so beautiful. Diana Ross rules
for me the best version of all, what an interpurator of a song,it does not get better than diana ross.
Diana Ross..hands down..❤❤
Beautiful just beautiful
agreed! Diana's version is the best. I love Melissa Manchester, especially her "Don't Cry out Loud", but props is given where it's due.
It is the BEST version even comparing to the songwriter's. The arrangement suits the song and her voice
time has left us older and wiser...thank you theSUPREMEscene
Before there was Whitney, Mariah, Beyonce... Ms. Ross is the real deal!

This album and "Surrender" were my two fav Ross albums..
I was 15 years old when I brought 'Surrender " it was awesome. Have you heard the unreleased "I'll come " from the same album. IMO it should have replaced "I'm a winner ". I play "Baby it's me" at least twice a month with stiff Dywars.

She's an entertainer. Who she is as a person is none of your business unless you know her personally.
Melissa Manchester’s Song 👍👍👍👍👍
Diana's version is the best.

I love what you did with the montage of art.
Well this is one of my all-time favorites
The empress of pop kills this
One or Two off her Photos remind me off Janet - did Janet learn from Ms Ross hummm 💕💕💕💕💕💕
also another great version of this song by Roslyn Kind.
I love Cheryl Lynn version because it's the first one I ever heard... Now I discovered everyone else sing this too
Andre Hooker I agree

Ross is grand!!!!
Diana is a great technician but Toni Tenille puts passion into her version.
Love Ms Ross and all the others mentioned but Cheryl Lynn did this song the best hands down
If you think either sang this better than Diana does here, than a hearing aid is in your future.
Beautiful. Right? This is how love feels. Music Education In The Schools by Richard Shaw. This is why I wrote my book. Audible.Com
We all know about Melissa Manchester and this song, duh... but I still Diana sings this song best...
Anthony you have never been so wrong!
Toni Tennille belted out a pretty good version of this song in 1977.
The best version, erzug!
Great!! Now, I have a challenge for you: Can U Upload Diana Ross & The Supremes Funny Girl Album?
LOL...Diane's cover of this Melissa Manchester "Billboard Pop Chart Mega Hit" is adequate at best!
