Point Pleasant Beach, NJ had one in service until at least the 90s. It had an even deeper tone. It sounded like the world was coming to an end. Day-trippers would come up to me on the lifeguard stand asking "my God! What's happening!!??" "Point Beach has a fire call." "Holy hell, what's burning?"
55 years ago when I was a kid our town had this for noon whistle and fire siren. Louder than he'll but we were used to it. It's been unused for decades and I kinda miss it.
That horn sounds almost cartoonish, but cruise ships do similarly with their horns and internal alarms for emergencies and muster station life boat drills. The muster station code was 7 short honks followed by 1 long honk of the horn.
Wow, G below C below C below middle C. There are two horns up there - (last I looked), but it sounds like only one is sounding. That is a brass piston, no doubt; the pitch is so low.
Erik Anderson It's intentional use was to alert farmers when a fire was active but now we just use it to alert our members if they don't have their pagers and don't get the text
infinitecanadian They are loud because we use it to notify our members especially when they are 2 miles away. But some members live way out in the town and they either hear the pager or get the text. That explains why they're so loud
STLSF 4003 we don’t. When we get a fire call, the second set of tones sets off the horn. Alerts members. I can hear it from my grandparents house in the middle of Cortland.
I know there so loud so are the ones In New Milford NJ way back when Company 2 and DPW including Company 1 . we only have 1 Diaphone at company 1 there still thinking about putting a another one by Company 2 .I still hate the old one .
are they by any chance louder than locomotive horns which register around 150 decibels at 5ft? and are audible from 5 miles on a calm day without wind?

This is the former foghorn in Duluth Mn. They sound very similar, so my guess is that it is a Type F2T.

0:00 When you stub your toe
Keep those videos of that diaphone comin... Can u get a pic of the horn if possible
+Kenneth Tortoso look for the diaphone on google earth its on top of the building in between the two roofs
Kenneth Tortoso It's on top of the station
That can't be a Gamewell Diaphone, That sounds like an F2T or type F classic fog diaphone! Perhaps they actually bought a retired foghorn..
Dan S yes, it does sound like an F2T. The one we had in the harbor in Duluth Mn was designed to be heard up to 20 miles away over water.
I lived in crete nebraska from 2015 to 2017 and we heard one of these from the fire station.
That's my hometown. :D
kittensugars Homer NY, 13077?

infinitecanadian Company 1 Company 2 and the DPW are all loud in New Milford NJ where ever you standing the sound is gonna reach your ears
Thomas Nativo
I kinda wish that they had more sirens and diaphones in Canada. Hell, the diaphone was invented here.

What call were they going to?
i live somewhat near homer new york
ActionFire do you know how far out?
@@centralnewyorkresponses7887 freeville way
Why do they use diaphones instead of sirens?
+Coolcat97 my guess is they still have street side call boxes, so the horn is there to blast out the number of the box that was pulled.
+Vintage Fan Collector TV because they did not have sirens back then and probably forget to take them down
Kimberly Neder they had sirens then...
We have it because long ago, whenever there was a fire, the people in town would know.
