Before everyone decides to pull the phone apart please keep in mind that your microphone may just be blocked. I thought my mic was broken, however I cleaned it out with a toothpick and it works fine now. Serves me right for letting my son go on my phone all the time with his sticky Little Fingers xx

It seems the actual microphone is perpendicular to the microphone from outside the hole, meaning you cannot directly damage the microphone if you insert a pin e.g., (SIM card pin.)
What could get damaged if someone inserted a pin into this microphone hole while the phone is assembled?

If you block the hole with dirt/grease, that blocks the sound and it muffles it.
