  • Today's video goes into detail about how professional musicians play over chord progressions. This approach is the one that is taught in universities and colleges of music and while it is difficult, once you get a taste of doing it successfully, it can become addictive! Great lesson! Exactly what I've just started doing once I discovered noodling with the scale just isn't musical :D

Hi Matt, this is a very valuable lesson. I do have a question: if the chords are changing quickly (every two beats or even every beat as opposed to a full measure), is your approach the same or is it even possible? Would the "common scale" be a viable option then? Thanks man!

Glad you dug the video! In the situations you described, it is certainly possible to do this when theres two chords in a bar. Obviously this takes twice the mental and finger bandwidth but its certainly something to strive for! If it's too quick a tempo or you're just looking for an alternative sound, a more common practice would be to play one bar of the second chord and ignore the chord that precedes it. For example if the bar was Dm7 for two beats and then G7 for two beats, it's not uncommon for musicians to just treat it as a bar of G7.
      Hope that helps!

Hi Matt, I have practised this method once since our recent lesson. I actually found that searching for triads for each chord change gave me a better chance to nit 'jack rabbit' as much due to a shape popping out at me because I was lookijg into the future by saying the next chord shape number in my head and i was able to hit the 3rd or the 5th of the change on that new triad. When I filled the canvas I wasn't able to chunk it down so much and needed to play the changes on the root however when I run through an arpeggio the extra scale notes as nice decoration jump out at me and i go hit a few slides or hammer ons etc. Its likei have discovered 2 seperate wrelms that i can work on in the hope that they eventually come together.

Re read my own message, terrible spelling and punctuation etc...leaving it in 😅

Haha, it sounds like you're completely on the right track! This practice can be frustrating at times but the fruits that it bears in terms of connecting harmonic content and in terms of "little epiphanies" such as blending scale tones in between your arpeggio notes!

@mattfranceschini you told.me.to be kind to myself at the end of our lesson and I wondered why you said that...about 5mins into 'filling the canvass' (and spilling paint all over myself) I understood why you said that now 🫠🫠😬
