  • When this sump pump quit working, Alex's dad was convinced the motor was burned up. But Alex's mom suggested we tear into it as a learning exercise to see how it works - and who knows? Maybe we can fix it?
    This is a Drummond sump pump with a water level switch and freeze protection. Alex got to practice using some tools and explore the parts of sump pump. We may have saved some money by fixing it instead of replacing it...you'll have to watch to see.
    Whenever something breaks, consider if it's an opportunity to take apart with your kiddos and see if you can figure out how it works and how it is put together. It's a great chance to learn.

    I love this. First video I found of the inside of a sump pump. The previous home owner must’ve pulled the power cord out of the sump pump.. so I had bare wires showing.. and my capacitor was blown..

    Liked it less than 1 min in it! Even if it doesn’t get fixed I think this is such an excellent exercise to share. This is great parenting!

    It’s easy to diagnose burnout in small ac motors such as this. When connected to power a burned out motor will not spin and will emit a faint humming sound

      If I remember correctly, the impeller is made out of rubber. Whatever you use, make sure it’s a safe for that and rubber seals and then rinse well.

      No. We previously used it in a drainage basin in our yard in an area that collected lots of water.

    out of curiosity, do you have any idea why my very same pump does not turn off?

    • @OkieSchoolofAdventure
      @OkieSchoolofAdventure  6 місяців тому

      My guess would be build up on the water level sensor probes. I’d pull that cover off and clean them off with sandpaper.

    Don't have a child explain on how to repair a sump pump. Where I live my basement got 14 to 16 inches of water and have two sump pumps working 24 hours a day. If you need to repair it, it should be explained by an adult. If you want your son to learn about repairing sump pumps do without a video where people are depending on reliable advise.

    • @pipsplay
      @pipsplay Рік тому +3

      I'm not really sure how an adult telling you to check for blockage, make sure the impeller is spinning freely, then take it apart to see if you have obvious (and not so obvious - that capacitor looked warped to me!) problems would be any different than how this child explained it. He obviously didn't script the video, he just acted and read the script. (Great job, by the way!)
      Most 'professional plumbing' sites say to check the electricity, make sure the electricity is working, then call them. This was much better.
      Just because his pump didn't quit working the same way your pump quit working isn't the child's fault.
      But, you do you.
