    If you add a sheet of thin stainless steel to the top of your platform the rounds slide so much easier. I'm 73 years old and did this very same thing about 20 years ago.

      Hey Josh! its a council tool pickaroon. I got mine on amazon a few years back and whats nice is that a standard 32 inch handle from home depot replaces it! Ive re hung this once because I cut 1/2 through it haha! Its a nice tool and a MUST have!

    I did something similar yrs ago, but I hate running the splitter vertical. I'd rather noodle the rounds(cut them from the side)with a chainsaw or just lift them with the loader bucket.

    • @HomesteadJay
      @HomesteadJay  3 роки тому

      Yeah I dont mind the vertical! Once you get a hand with the pickaroon it goes quite fast! Thanks for watching!

    How long would those large half rounds season prior to burning? What would be ideal? Does it vary by species?

    • @HomesteadJay
      @HomesteadJay  2 роки тому

      I can burn green wood but I like to split the large rounds at least 1x to dry faster then whole round. It takes about a 11 inch round to dry to 20 ish percent in 2 years from what Ive seen but yes it depends on the species! If you have an outdoor wood boiler have a mix of split and no split wood. If you have a good coal bed throw unsplit rounds in and if you dont use the split wood to build the coals!

    I think it is amazing Jay that you can handle those Chun ks without gloves. I have dishpan hands anymore. Holding on to a steering wheel doesn't seem to build up callouses. What brand is you hookaroon?

    • @HomesteadJay
      @HomesteadJay  3 роки тому +1

      Hey Gary! It’s a council tool pickaroon I got it on Amazon years ago! It’s a solid unit! 32 inch handle I believe. I wouldn’t do firewood without it!

    Remember that someday your wife may need to load the wood burner for a while. So, having a few weeks (or a month or so) worth of wood split much smaller for her to be able to handle and load into the burner is a smart idea. Be prepared.
    I made a platform like yours a few years ago out of plywood and 2x4s it didn’t hold up, I’m probably going to rip some 4x4 pieces that I have to make another. My splitter only has a 2” height on the platform.

    • @steveaw5895
      @steveaw5895 3 роки тому +1

      On the same thought, maybe paint it a bright
      color so it's not mistaken for scrap wood.

    • @HomesteadJay
      @HomesteadJay  3 роки тому

      Hey Denny! I have a few cords and a smaller branch section for that reason for sure! These beefy rounds are my "overnight" logs and I burn the pine and scrap during the day! Keep in mind all the sawmill cut offs are generally smaller and lighter so God forbid I cant we can still load with lighter stuff!

  • @johnbrinck5260

    If you put another layer on your pad the wedge will go past the bottom of log and split easier

    Do you have electrical power where you split wood? If you can I highly recommend replacing the gas motor with an electric motor, no noise that requires ear protectors and considerably cheaper to operate and it starts by a switch instead of yanking on a starter rope. You will need 230 volts to keep it efficient however.
    Food for thought

    • @HomesteadJay
      @HomesteadJay  3 роки тому

      Hey James! Thats not a bad idea but I dont have that power out there and it would be a job and a half to get power down here but if I ever did run power that would be on the list!
