- Bare-knuckle boxing in 1933 New Orleans with a buff Charles Bronson in the ring and James Coburn as his sleazy (what else?) promoter. Writer Walter Hill's directing debut is gritty, brutal and riveting. Great support from the always reliable Strother Martin. At some point this film was recut from an R rating to a PG.

I agree, a great movie that was so underrated .
Everything from the music score to the authenticity of the period and of course great performances by Bronson, Colburn & Martin in particular made for a memorable movie I never get tired of watching every now and again.
my favorite of his. RIP Mr. Bronson.
I agree, my favourite Bronson movie!
One of my favorite films of Charles Bronson I love the bare-knuckle fighting
Josh nailed it. This movie is a lean, mean, fighting machine. Excellent all around.
The most underrated film of all times . People should be forced to watch at gunpoint if need be .
You are guys are 'exactly right' as another fighter Wade Garrett would say. This is such a special movie. Such great dialogue. 'Nobody ever beats him, not many want to try', 'some are destined for failure, others have it forced upon them', 'it makes me feel a hellava lot better than the other guy', 'I want to have a long talk with anyone betting against me', 'this is your lucky day', 'that's a matter of opinion'. These are just a sampling. This should be required in all schools. This type of movie just doesn't exist anymore. Emperor of the North is not a bad companion to this movie. Wonder if Cheyney and A #1 ever rode on the same train.
@@elindioedwards1048 thank u my friend . Like I said kids should be forced to watch this at school . And the teachers made to eat the Charles sickens book in front of the whole class .HEY OLD MAN I M GONNA END THIS 4 U .
@@christopherjames375 You got it buddy. It's a pleasure to talk about this great movie. It pretty much has it all. And all of the characters have their appeal. 'It's a pleasure watching you work'. I've used that line so many times.
@@elindioedwards1048 u r welcome my friend at 61 I no my actors and films . I am well known in my end 4 it . Hey Chris what was the female actress in so and so jane Smith . I am a walking dictionary on films and dates . Good doing business wit h . RESPWCT .
@@christopherjames375 Same here buddy. I'm going to go take care of the in betweens now. Take care.
Simply put, Walter Hill was a badass director of badass films with Hard Times being one of his best.
I saw this in the theaters when it came out by accident .....best accident ever!!!! Charles Bronson and James Coburn.....enough said!!
Excellent movie; a lot to due with being set in depression era 1933. If it had been set in modern times it wouldn't have been half so gritty.
Just came back from watching John Wick 3. This experience reinforced why I continue to watch Hard Times at least once a year. Today's movies have absolutely no substance. JW3 was just one protracted fight/chase scene after another. No sense of irony or pathos I think this must how the decline of the Roman Empire felt. Literally was bored after 15 minutes. Hard Times on the other can be watched multiple times during a week. Chick Gandil/Mr. Pettibone, where a you when we need you?
Hmmmm, I think The Mechanic is also one of Bronson's greatest films.
Here here . A True masterpiece . Charles Bronson is the 2 nd best act of of all time after Steve maqueen of COURCE.
Wow I haven't seen The Mechanic in a long time... forgot all about that one...
It's a great movie for Rick & Morty fans who don't know who Jan-Michael Vincent is...
Absolutely one of my very few all time top movies and you're correct about the majestic sparseness of Hill's directing. Thanks for this!
The greatest films immediately draw you in, where you not only see, but feel the atmosphere and environment of the period. The opening wedding scene of "The Godfather" was like that, where you felt like you were there, at one of the back tables somewhere. Same with "Hard Times," as the freight train comes rumbling into New Orleans, and later in the waterfront, back-alley warehouses of the Big Easy, the lonely ship's whistle in the background, we feel The Depression, like times really were hard for men like Chaney. A masterpiece from director Hill.
Hard Times, The Mechanic and Mr. Majestyk are Bronson's best "solo" movies...not in a large ensemble pic like Once Upon A Time.
And a Huge Walter HIll fan too.
I have this movie on DVD and watch it at least 2-3 times a year 🤣
Never gets old !
For me, HARD TIMES is the second best film ever made and far and away Bronson's top performance. It's interesting that Olson remarks on the lack of a backstory for the characters, pointing out that there really is no background given for Bronson (and little for the other stars), when the novelization of the film (which I still have somewhere) actually provides such to explain why "Chaney" is riding that train at the beginning of the movie. It's not overdone on the book, but I like Hill's visual version better. CuffColl.
HARD TIMES is my second favorite film of AAAALLLL Time. CuffColl.
Growing up I watched all the Charles Bronson movies he's my favorite always will be
I love this film, Chaney, Po and Speed!!!
Great fight seen. Better than rocky.
Might be best movie to see New Orleans…
Walter Hill's first film. Bronsons best.
Fantastic movie
I've watched this at least 5 times , it's a super film . I love the trip to the bayou .
Very realistic street bare knuckle fighting. Punches and kicks from all over the place.
Sadler 3 of the finest actors time has seen are no longer with us .
Always been one of my favorites.
My favourite Bronson movie for sure.
Mr. Majestyk is right up there. There needs to be a definitive biography on Bronson. If you know how and where and when he grew up, that explains about 95% of him. He's the real deal.
The Mechanic….
Great movie!
Does anyone know what the chain link structure that Robert Tessier and Charles Bronson have their fight in is used for in real life?
Wherever Charles Bronson went, he'd run into tough guys who wanted to pick fights with him!
Charles Bronson ..best movies..i think are.1) hard times 2) noon till three .3) white buffalo ,4) breakheart pass.5) death wish.6) dirty dozen.7) how the west was one.8) the valchalie papers.)9.the mechanic .10) kid galahad
thank you , for reminding of those two movies... your right about the the magnificent seven , and the great escape... but to me they were more steve McQueen movies..that launch.. but your are right about them.. they are great movies
What about Mr. Majestyck?
Also a very good Bronson movie.
What about "The Great Escape" or "The Magnificent Seven"?
The remake was ok . Not a patch on the 1 st .
