What a treasure!! To see Valerie Starrett (the original Diana Taylor), Patsy Rahn (the original Monica Webber) and Michael Gregory (the original Rick Webber). Priceless!
I liked the originals better. Leslie Charleson seemed to be so much older for the part of Monica. And the new Diana looked absolutely nothing like the original which made it hard for me to see her in the role.
1977 we also got Tracy Quarantine ..I think that year the show brought in new characters and re-Casted alot of the roles !! I think this was the same year ABC was considering cancelling the show due to Low Ratings !!
I started watching GH in 1978..So a year later than this..This is when it really started to get good..I don't watch GH anymore..I watch all the classic episodes on the net:)
GH really and truly sucks now. Previously there were different interesting storylines that weaved their ways throughout the years and some eventually ended up connected to each other. Like in most soaps, court days were interesting and lead to something shocking and court days and weddings had most characters attend. GH sucks these days - the lack of intricate, complicated storylines, and like of excitement for court days and weddings is ALL DUE TO MONEY!
The ratings for GH in the ‘70s were all over the place. The first few years of the ‘70s GH was rated among the top five soaps peaking as high as second place during the 1971-72 season. But ‘74-‘75 until the ‘77-78 season the show was holding steady around ninth and tenth place. But the ‘78-‘79 season would see the show once again rise in the ratings peaking again in second place. But the following year ‘79-80, the show would finally capture then number one spot and remain there for 10 years. They still remain a top five rated show to this day. 😊😊
This is a treasure for those who appreciate soaps when they were in their glory days. By the way, the ratings for General Hospital were falling so fast at this time, ABC gave an unltimatum to the about- to- be- new producer Gloria Monty that if the ratings didn't go up AND FAST, no one would be checking into the hospital after summer. Gee, I wonder how that turned out?!
I probably thought it was boring being I was a teenager at this time but I like them now. I guess it's the whole vintage thing and missing these actors and actress' and being that young at the time.
in 1979 i was 19 just married working nights we both watched GH together and was hooked my father watches today in memory of my mother she was a big GH fan
Michael Anderson I still watching it. I’ve been watching since Scotty & Laura days. I started watching when Laura was on trial for killing David Hamilton (Was that his name?)
Leslie looks so young here but I loved her original hairstyle so much better. She was gorgeous when she joined GH and Genie looked just like a blonde version of DA. She was great casting as Leslie's daughter. I also loved Michael Gregory's Rick so much more than Chris Robinson. He had fantastic chemistry with everyone and especially Leslie and Laura. The whole relationship was so much lighter with him. With CR's Rick it was just a downer (my opinion). Anyway, I loved the show then. I was too young (17-18) to know that it was about to be cancelled if they didn't make radical changes. I had watched since the beginning so I knew all of the characters and the whole story of Lesley and Laura from the start.
Wow!!!! So old! It looks older than I remember for some reason! I know I'm getting old and 1977 is around the time I started watching with my Mom (who had watched from the beginning!) but I always thought it seemed clearer and brighter to me! (not the T.V. reception but the colors of their clothes ect..!!) I remember that I used to want to stay home "sick" from school so that I could watch G.H.!! lol!
Lol, I think many of us played sick just so we could watch G.H. I know I did. Also I gotta laugh, I also think it appears old & drab not at all like I remember...lol...just shows how spoiled we got with technology...
Thanks so much for posting this and thank you to mystery man. This is before I watched the show and never dreamed I would get to see anything from this era.:)
Wow! I can't believe I haven't seen these eps before. Wooooow! This is so many shades if awesome. I vaguely remember the blue hospital set and this version of Diana Taylor. I was only 3 when this ep aired in Spring 77. Didn't turn 4 til Oct. So my memories of GH 77 are barely there. Really only images and some faces. But it is amazing the difference a year makes because I remember more from 78.
I have NO idea why they replaced the wonderful Valerie Starrett with the bland Brooke Bundy as Diana Taylor. By the way, these clips are AWESOME! Love seeing Brett Halsey (Dr. Adam Streeter), Don Chastain (Dr. Tom Baldwin), and the magnificent Patsy Rahn (Dr. Monica Webber)!
Wow! I can see why GH was almost cancelled before Gloria Monty took over. This is snoozeville!! Harding Lemay had a LOT going on at the same time over on Another World!
I did some research, and the VCR was shipped to the United States in July 1977 (we got one that summer!). I think only Japan was the only other country to have one available at this time. The models before this one were much more limited on length of recording time...and not widely available.
I think some of the 60's ep's were the orginal reels saved by GH. The taped over most ep's in the early days, but the first few ep's were preserved. And there was 8MM ..
So weird, this early version of GH is soooo subdued- the acting, the music, etc. And yet, the opening theme is so booming it just doesn't fit. It doesn't fit until the very late 1970s.
I hate to break into a year old convo, but it involves a Baldwin so. . . :-} Tom "Tommy" Hardy's bio dad was Tom Baldwin - Lee's brother. And I'm not going to discuss Tommy's conception if you don't mind. Hits kinda close to home if you know what I mean. I will say Audrey had a whole lot in common with Elizabeth. *shrug* Sorry Mare, but had to point out that Tom Hardy is a Baldwin by birth. But his dad was a creep.
Are you able get any of the 1978 episodes when Brenda Scott was the second Dr Gina? I don't remember the episodes at the time but would love to see them.
I think it may be the way the character is written but this Rick absolutely seems more into her than CR's version. Even when Rick is trying to win her back after the divorce, he never seems as focused on Lesley as this guy is.
L B this is the Rick Webber that I knew and loved. I’m not sure if I would have been a Rick and Lesley fan, if CR had played him from the beginning. Like you said, MG version of Rick was so loving and supportive to Lesley. Did I say that he didn’t give Monica the time of day either, which was a plus!
Yeah I see why General Hospital is almost cancelled really boring but at the same time it's good to see where it came from the original Monica the original Rick Leslie Audrey Tom Baldwin I started watching General Hospital in the 80s when it was good but watching these kind of like okay this is good but it's boring but okay

Diana Taylor when she was alive..I thought Brooke Mundy did a did a good job with the role when She was killed off in 1981 !!

This brings pleasure memories of the daytime soap opera GH and rip to all of them who has passed on.

46 years later.....
Seeing Valerie Starrett (the original Diana Maynard Taylor; 1969-1977) is absolutely wonderful! She is an unsung hero of the show.
Thank you for uploading. Brings back so many wonderful memories for me as a young girl watching this with my sister who passed away.
Watched with mom grandma and great grandmother ( who was born in 1898)
I agree about Leslie's hair
in 1979 i was 19 just married working nights we both watched GH together and was hooked my father watches today in memory of my mother she was a big GH fan

Jennifer Barbati Yes, his name was David Hamilton.
Same here.

I would love to know the laura story from the beginning
that Rick Webber was fine. no wonder Monica was fighting for him.

Thank you to you and the Mystery Man.
romabriere thank you for putting this up! And Mystery man thank you for donating!! :) I have watched GH since I was little! I'm 37 now. :)
57 ...still a fan
Thank you so very, very much Mystery Man.
Thanks so much for posting this and thank you to mystery man. This is before I watched the show and never dreamed I would get to see anything from this era.:)
I love this vintage stuff!
Me too. You all the things that have changed and some that have not. Good stories too.

Brooke Bundy bland? I didn't think so. I liked her. We all have different views of these actors and actress'.
Was Monica Weber married to Jeff Weber
@@marshacummins2727 Monica was married to Jeff from 1976-1977 :) ( I started watching in 1976)
Yes, you are correct. Tom Hardy and Scott Baldwin even referred to themselves as cousins, although Tom was a Baldwin by blood and Scotty only in name.
I remember mowing kids down on the bus to get off fast enough to run to and catch the last half hour of this.
Wow! I can see why GH was almost cancelled before Gloria Monty took over. This is snoozeville!! Harding Lemay had a LOT going on at the same time over on Another World!

The irony is, of course, that Another World was cancelled in 1999 and GH is still going strong after 50 years!
And it was replaced with that crazy "Passions".
I loved this Monica, so much better than LC.
@romabriere That is not Tom Hardy it is Tom Baldwin, Lee's Brother. Tommy took Hardy name in Med school.
watching my Dark Shadows dvds i saw Ivn Francis played a doctor he is Genie Francis father
Ivor Francis.
So weird, this early version of GH is soooo subdued- the acting, the music, etc. And yet, the opening theme is so booming it just doesn't fit. It doesn't fit until the very late 1970s.

Yes
Me either

@romabriere no. His name was Tom Baldwin, and he was not Steve's brother. he was Lee Baldwin's brother.
"Don Chastain was from
Oklahoma my home state."-🤔🖥☕🇺🇲..

@jasoncarly - OOOPS! Yes it is. That's Tom Hardy... LOL - would help if I checked which clip you were referring to!!
Where on Earth do they find these old videos
I think It's Tom Baldwin (Lee Baldwins brother) played by Don Chastin. who is Tom's Bio Dad. Not Tom Hardy.
I think this Rick has WAY more chemistry with DA than CR!

@@hunnibunni4181 he was great w/ Laura too.
Chris Robinson was super low key. Michael Gregory was charismatic and handsome and a real leading man type.
@@jaredjlinden , Chris Robinson is also handsome and charismatic and a real leading man.
Nick - this was fall of 77.. Shortly before R&L were married in November.....
The days before HIPAA
I think it's earlier than the fall, as Lesley Charleson started as Monica in August 1977 and Patsy Rahn's still playing the role here
@jasoncarly - It's Tom Hardy's adopted dad, Steve Hardy. His bio dad was another Tom Hardy, Steve's brother... Long story! :) It's a soap opera! :)
@yocathyberger But there's stuff older than 1977 on here!
Recorded on Betamax
I thought Tom Hardy's bio dad was Tom Baldwin, Lee Baldwin's brother(?)
Why was Leslie in the hospital?
She miscarried her baby by Cameron Faulkner😢
Yeah I see why General Hospital is almost cancelled really boring but at the same time it's good to see where it came from the original Monica the original Rick Leslie Audrey Tom Baldwin I started watching General Hospital in the 80s when it was good but watching these kind of like okay this is good but it's boring but okay
