However, I'm trying to examine the pros and cons of each side and offer some integrated advice. I'm also curious to know the dominant learning style in your country and your reflections on this topic!

My dear friends! This video is based on my personal experience. I am conscious of the vast definitions of "East" and "West". I understand that in each system, we use a blend of methods, and effectiveness can also depend on one's stage of study and domain. This comparison is more of a point of debate. I'm curious to know the dominant learning style in your country and your reflections on this topic!😉

    in brief:
The video discusses the differences between Eastern and Western learning styles based on the creator's personal experiences.
    **1. Introduction:**
    - The video contrasts the stereotypical Eastern education style, often associated with countries like China, Korea, and Japan, which emphasizes rote memorization and test-taking techniques, with the Western style, commonly seen in the US and Europe, which focuses on free thinking, creativity, and active engagement.

**2. Rote Memorization in Eastern Education:**
    - Historically, China's bureaucratic elite was selected through rigorous exams that focused on Confucian classics, leading to a culture that values memorization as a means of social mobility.
    - The modern Chinese education system, with exams like the Gaokao, still emphasizes memorization.
    - While rote memorization can ensure foundational knowledge, especially in subjects like math or language basics, it's criticized for not promoting critical thinking.
**3. Active Engagement in Western Education:**
    - The Socratic method, which emphasizes questioning and logical reasoning, is a defining feature of Western teaching.
    - Western education values critical thinking, debate, and discussion.
    - Active recall, rooted in cognitive psychology, is a method where learners try to recall information without looking at the source, making learning more interactive.
    **4. Pros and Cons:**
    - **Rote Memorization:**
    - Pros: Builds discipline, focus, and foundational knowledge.
    - Cons: Can lead to stress, burnout, and lacks promotion of creativity and critical thinking.
    - **Active Engagement:**
    - Pros: Fosters deeper understanding, encourages critical thinking, and promotes active participation.
    - Cons: Can be time-consuming, lacks structure, and can feel overwhelming.
    **5. Fusion Advice:**
    - The video suggests a fusion of both styles, combining memorization with active engagement.
    - For subjects like history or language learning, one can use active learning to understand correlations and then use spaced memorization for review.
    **6. Conclusion:**
    - The effectiveness of rote memorization vs. active engagement depends on the subject. For instance, memorization might be crucial for medical science or basic math, but higher-level subjects require understanding and critical thinking.
    - The creator encourages viewers to mix up their learning styles and see what works best for them.
    **7. Call to Action:**
    - The creator asks viewers to share their learning styles and reflections on the topic in the comments and encourages them to subscribe to the channel.
This video provides a comprehensive overview of the two predominant learning styles, offering insights into their origins, benefits, and drawbacks. It emphasizes the importance of finding a balance and adapting one's learning methods based on the subject and individual preferences.

I also was educated in HK at young and moved to the western world as a teenager. I do realize that a mix of both is the best. It can take lots more effort, but that's where the eastern discipline helps. I used to understand the theory to formulas and try to practice and prove the formulas multiple times. Then at the beginning of each exam, i would prove out the formulas first on the paper and reference to it whenever i need it during the exam. Similar to what you did, when I studied, I took notes but in my own words (I make sure i'm not copying from the text book) after I read it multiple times and think I understand it. These notes, are what I used to review before exams. I think this really helped. I actually dont know if it takes more time than memorizing practice exams :)

It was rich and enriching. The professor's name was Ilham Bouayad and she really made me love what she taught and I think of continuing my studies down there. I have been a fan of the traditional grammar approach a lot, also the functionalist approach. 🎄🎋

Hi ! Thank you for this video, it's very interesting ! I'm French so I grew up with a more "Western" system, even if, as you said, this method takes more time and sometimes teachers can't work with us like that. But what's interesting is that I'm at the university studying biology to pass the entrance competition of vets school and it relies a lot on an "Eastern" system, with many ideas and concepts to memorize !

I appreciate your thought and letting us know it. I'm an intermediate English learner, so I can't grasp all of your thought in detail, I'd agree with almost of your thought. I suppose learning method/strategy would depend on whether the language is ideogram or phonogram. The person using ideogram, like as Chinese/Japanese, have advantage in rote memorization, I suppose. Each Chinese characters has its own meaning which emanate/exude from itself. On the other hand, phonogram for me, I feel it like scrabbles, written without meaning randomly, it'd make me difficult to memorize. Therefore, it'd proceed imaging/thinking more than memorizing, I suppose.

both are equally important. but i still think having a strong memorisation base is more useful. when you forget, the information just becomes lost knowledge. understanding and revelation can come later. and even after that, you still have to remember it. keep retraining to recall something over a few weeks and it will become easier to recall in the future. realisation and aha moments can also make something easier to remember or reconnect. so, both are very important. ask the right question, understand it, and remember it.

I think when I have higher energy / very awake and alert then that time is best suited for me to use the active engagement approach - for example thinking critically about a grammar point I am trying to understand and creating new sentences with that grammar point.
But when I am tired and still want to study then rote memorization is better for me - when it is a bit late in the evening and I feel very tired but I still want to review then it is pretty easy for me to use Anki and focus on memorizing vocabulary a bit.

    我想在这里提出一个问题,现代化是从西方开始的,但不代表西方的方式和现代化是绑定的。很多时候的东西方对比实际上是一种现代化文化和未完全现代化的文化在对比,又由于历史上伴随着殖民主义和全球化的发生,欧洲的现代化方式又打断了其他地方本身的现代化进程,从这个角度来看,东方的概念实际上是一个西方中心论的结果。所以我们面对的问题是:什么才是西方的,什么才是东方的?

    • @fleurnoir-pm1jd
      @fleurnoir-pm1jd 3 місяці тому

      西方本就是问你问题要用你自己的想法和思维回答并且使用自己的验证和课总结而来,而东方貌似是有好几个标准答案比较确定没有灵活性。不过更准确,批改更快学的也更快。应为是别人的想法和大量的祖先智慧历史和诗句不像法国那样没那么长久的历史所以说的就具体一点课上可以问问题。而且本来东西方都在互相影响比如中国的英语单词死记硬背传到巴黎了,以前都是背诗和名句的。还有法国追求说话和在别人面前演讲和发表自我意见不像中国那样听老师说,所以中国反而学的比欧洲多和密。比如数学的基础和题要难很多,不易理解但是所有人都会做很难的题。问题在于不知道为什么学这么高级的数学,还用不上。所以个人觉得中国人总体比法国各方面除了说话和理性判断意外纯知识要厉害。不过要说实用性理解力理性辩论等平均法国人更容易敢于说出自我想法和各方面舆论不会那么玻璃心和对人有偏见说别的国家的不是以及种族歧视不合群严重拉帮结派。法国不是没有是你这么做会有一大推没事干的媒体过来说你。应为法国媒体比较闲法国小所以怎么说也就这样吐槽就多一些。中国比较大要说的太多吐槽人和说这样的社会问题的时间没那么多,说白了就是不注重。当然这是我一个中国血缘的巴黎人的想法。

You also need to consider that none of the methods are about actual learning. School is 99% about indoctrination and shaping individuals social behaviour according to the requirements of the government. If you haven’t read already then John Taylor Gatto’s book “The Underground History of American Education” will explain how the Western schooling system was created from the Prussian military model, and why it is not reformable.
