First, THANK YOU for being straight up about the small profit margin and using journals/planners as a starting point. I'm just getting ready to start and some of these videos don't tell you and I want to be realistic about my expectations and planning.
Yea I definitely learned about the small profit margins when I started because I also didn't hear alot of people mention it in their videos. The only reason why I stayed motivated to do it was because I was also coaching. So it balanced out.

Exactly! When I printed a "proof" for my journal for a local printer, I did go with premium paper, but it was $22 to print! I needed to see it printed, though, so it was worth it. Everyone else who was local wanted me to purchase a minimum order of $800. I didn't want to do that as I hadn't even finalized the front cover yet!

Thanks for this video! I had no idea about the ISBN for KDP, which basically gives Amazon the rights to what you've created. Wow. And someone else said (on another channel) that those can be pretty expensive, although I never actually checked. I like that you break down a non-spiral workbook vs a spiral workbook. I love almost everything I use as a spiral notebook. They might not be as "pretty", but they are so much more useful in terms of ease of writing, having the page open, etc. You provide such great ideas here!

Yes. With Lulu if you do standard shipping it's gonna take a good 12-14 days to get your stuff. I haven't experienced any issues to have to contact customer service for them. But overall I have had a good experience printing with them so far.

Yea definitely do what works for you. There are multiple ways to do the rough draft and then you can pull it all together in Canva. I find that my ideas flow a lot better with old fashion pen and paper. :)

Honestly I wouldn't chance it. I haven't heard any horror stories about it but I would just stick to creating them from scratch or purchasing them from Etsy.

You can find tons of templates of Etsy for sure. With Saddle stitching keep in mind that there is a cap on how many pages and it have. I think it's 50 pages or less but I am not sure.

Yes. You could publish them on Kindle. The only downside to that is from what I heard, if you do that, Kindle doesn't allow you to publish them anywhere else. You would ONLY be able to sell them through Kindle. I personally don't like that so I wouldn't move forward with putting mine on there.

Did you edit through Canva? If so did you have margins in when creating your planner/journal? There is a middle margin that you have to keep everything inside of or it will give you those errors on KDP

I spent 2 years designing my budget planner, and now I’m ready to bring jt to life. But I’m struggling because I designed it in keynote, but I can’t export it as photos cause they get blurry. I tried to redesign in canva, but it doesn’t let me make tables as big as I need, so I’m so lost. I’ve finally perfected it, it looks beautiful as a pdf being uses on Goodnotes, but I want it on paper, and I can not figure it out. Any advice?

I think there is a strong market for both. And yes on any platform you need to have the interior pages in a separate PDF file and have the cover (both front,back and spine) as a second PDF
I have watched tons of videos and cannot get a definitive answer to whether you can create low content books and have a couple of different covers for them so where one cover can appeal to one type of customer and the other to a different audience. I can’t even find the answer on KDP’s website. They talk about novels. Some say absolutely not without changing the inside a bit and others say it’s fine. Any thoughts? Really enjoyed your video n
That's a great question. I personally don't use KDP for my Planners and Journals but I don't see why you wouldn't be able to switch out the cover and sell the same type of low content book. I mean I look on amazon for planners all of the time and I see them with different color and cover options all of the time. I would say go for it. But that's just me.
I’m curious to know where is the category for office supplies to upload on Amazon because it’s not there or NO LONGER there. So how can you actually upload a planner if keep only wants books to be uploaded which is real funny because there’s thousands of planners on Amazon lol
That's a good question. I have not recently tried to upload a planner to amazon kdp. I do know that they recently made a LOT of changes due to people creating low content books and planners with AI. I wonder if that has something to do with it not being an option anymore? 🤔
Hi Path33Tarot, Amazon did change a lot of categories and you can only use 3 now but you can still upload journals, etc. on KDP. I just put one in yesterday 😀

Greetings Beautiful, Quick question about Canva. Even if you edit the premade template. Does this template now becomes yours to where you are able to use it for your planner, journal, and etc.? I also have a question about KDP. Are you saying if you allow them to put a barcode on your product they now own the right to it? Also it it best to put your product on KDP because they already have the audience? Will this make your marketing easier?
Great Questions. I will answer in order: 1: Technically yes and no. The base of the template is still theirs and its a gray area when it comes to selling products using their templates. I wouldn't trust it honestly. Better safe than sorry. 2: If you use their ISBN they have the rights to resell your planner/journal in anyway they choose. So yes.. Technically you are giving the the selling rights to your planner. Ex: Someone noticed that multiple Amazon vendors were selling a planner that they originally made and added to Amazon. And they were charging a cheaper rate. It was nothing the author could do because she put it on amazon to sell originally and somehow those vendors were able to access the digital file and resell it. I would look more into detail about their rights but I personally don't use Amazon KDP anymore. 3: Yes it will make marketing easier but also keep in mind that you will still have to do alot of marketing on your platforms as well to get sells coming in. I would not soley rely on amazon to push your products. I hope this helps! 😊

There is a copyright website that you can go to and apply to have something copyrighted (although anything you create you automatically retain copyrights to that product). Also as far as Trademarking I would just hire someone to do that part to ensure it is done properly. PS: I am not an attorney so take what I say with a grain of salt. I'm only advising based on the knowledge that I have. Seek an attorney for details on Trademarking and Copyrights. :)
Hi do you know a company which can print coil binded book with semi hard cover? I want to print coloring book for my kids, but they need a hardcover for better coloring.. And all printer companies I found with a very thin soft cover. Thank you
Great question. The only places that I have seen offer hard cover with coil binding has been through Alibaba vendors. And they require a minimum purchase order amount because it's overseas and they make them custom.
I personally didn't pay for copyright. When you create something you automatically retain copyrights of your work. What I did was purchase a Copyright template to add inside my planners just to re-iterate everything. But this was BEFORE Chat GPT. Now I have Chat GPT write out my disclaimers and Copyright information. (Disclaimer: I am NOT a Laywer and this is not legal advice. I'm just sharing what I did 😊)

The unfortunate thing about digital products is the moment they buy it they can share it if they want. There is no way to protect the file because it's digital. My recommendation is to charge accordingly because of the fact that they only have to purchase it one time. I hope this helps!

I thumbs-upped and subscribed but ... While these products look well designed, unfortunately, this video seems more like a marketing vehicle than an actual "How to Create" tutorial. But, I'm not picking on Lashawnda -- many of the top "How to Create [Journals,Planners] on Canva" videos should actually be titled "How to Assemble and Publish [Journals, Planners]", but I suppose they use "Create" because of keyword research. I like her conversational, informative style, but I'm just disappointed that this only describes the process of "preparing" your journal, not creating it. I would have expected coverage of at least how to design and layout 2-3 interior pages. To improve this video, a callout/video bubble to a tutorial on creating the planner interior pages could be placed at 26:00
I definitely appreciate your feedback. There are a TON of planner videos that are full of fluff out there for sure. I will say that I feel as well as others that this video is value packed for those who are just beginning and I have learned as an educator that you have to be careful with bombarding people with too much information. It will actually have the opposite result of what you wish to get an an educator. I do plan to create future videos showing the actual process but there are definitely videos on UA-cam showing you the actual process because thats how I learned. You just have to search for exactly what you need help with.

I was weary of using their templates after reading their disclaimer and this confirmed my hesitation. Now I'm like "oh man, how will Canva be useful without their templates? Don't be nervous. I used a template to create a copyright page inside of my planners. But you can go to the actual copyright site and file for a copyright if that makes you feel more comfortable. You automatically retain copyrights to anything that you create. So I didn't feel the need to go that far and file.
Hello... I have questions... I want to create a planner... do i or can i copyright to protect my planner pages. Also if I publish or sell it on etsy or kdp... is that protecting your creation?
The moment you design or create something new you automatically retain copyright's to your product. If I am being honest even WITH copyright it is hard to keep someone from stealing your IP. Them moment they get your digital file, they can essentially do what they want with it. I have heard that its not even worth pursuing it legally due to everything involved. So I would recommend being very strategic in your price points and with any digital product you choose to sell. Also if you plan on using Amazon KDP, keep in mind that the moment you add your product to their platform, they have in their conditions that they can resell your IP to third parties EVEN if you archive the product. There is no way to fully remove your product and they will always have the ability to resell it.

You would have to provide your own inventory outside of KDP because they do not currently offer spiral bound printing. I have not tried to sell my spiral bound planners on Amazon yet so I am not sure about the actual process to do that.

From my understanding an ISBN also allows you to have a preview inside your planner on Amazon. Could be wrong but that's my understanding.

Yes! I create all of my planners. journals, etc with Canva. Highly recommend. Make sure you have the paid version though.

Hi Path33Tarot, Amazon did change a lot of categories and you can only use 3 now but you can still upload journals, etc. on KDP. I just put one in yesterday 😀

Quick question about Canva. Even if you edit the premade template. Does this template now becomes yours to where you are able to use it for your planner, journal, and etc.?
I also have a question about KDP. Are you saying if you allow them to put a barcode on your product they now own the right to it?
Also it it best to put your product on KDP because they already have the audience? Will this make your marketing easier?
Great Questions. I will answer in order:
1: Technically yes and no. The base of the template is still theirs and its a gray area when it comes to selling products using their templates. I wouldn't trust it honestly. Better safe than sorry.
2: If you use their ISBN they have the rights to resell your planner/journal in anyway they choose. So yes.. Technically you are giving the the selling rights to your planner. Ex: Someone noticed that multiple Amazon vendors were selling a planner that they originally made and added to Amazon. And they were charging a cheaper rate. It was nothing the author could do because she put it on amazon to sell originally and somehow those vendors were able to access the digital file and resell it. I would look more into detail about their rights but I personally don't use Amazon KDP anymore.
3: Yes it will make marketing easier but also keep in mind that you will still have to do alot of marketing on your platforms as well to get sells coming in. I would not soley rely on amazon to push your products.

How do you copyright and trademark everything for your business?
There is a copyright website that you can go to and apply to have something copyrighted (although anything you create you automatically retain copyrights to that product).
Also as far as Trademarking I would just hire someone to do that part to ensure it is done properly.
PS: I am not an attorney so take what I say with a grain of salt. I'm only advising based on the knowledge that I have. Seek an attorney for details on Trademarking and Copyrights. :)
Hi do you know a company which can print coil binded book with semi hard cover? I want to print coloring book for my kids, but they need a hardcover for better coloring.. And all printer companies I found with a very thin soft cover. Thank you
Great question. The only places that I have seen offer hard cover with coil binding has been through Alibaba vendors. And they require a minimum purchase order amount because it's overseas and they make them custom.

I personally didn't pay for copyright. When you create something you automatically retain copyrights of your work. What I did was purchase a Copyright template to add inside my planners just to re-iterate everything. But this was BEFORE Chat GPT. Now I have Chat GPT write out my disclaimers and Copyright information. (Disclaimer: I am NOT a Laywer and this is not legal advice. I'm just sharing what I did 😊)

The unfortunate thing about digital products is the moment they buy it they can share it if they want. There is no way to protect the file because it's digital.
My recommendation is to charge accordingly because of the fact that they only have to purchase it one time. I hope this helps!

I thumbs-upped and subscribed but ... While these products look well designed, unfortunately, this video seems more like a marketing vehicle than an actual "How to Create" tutorial. But, I'm not picking on Lashawnda -- many of the top "How to Create [Journals,Planners] on Canva" videos should actually be titled "How to Assemble and Publish [Journals, Planners]", but I suppose they use "Create" because of keyword research. I like her conversational, informative style, but I'm just disappointed that this only describes the process of "preparing" your journal, not creating it. I would have expected coverage of at least how to design and layout 2-3 interior pages. To improve this video, a callout/video bubble to a tutorial on creating the planner interior pages could be placed at 26:00
I definitely appreciate your feedback. There are a TON of planner videos that are full of fluff out there for sure.
I will say that I feel as well as others that this video is value packed for those who are just beginning and I have learned as an educator that you have to be careful with bombarding people with too much information. It will actually have the opposite result of what you wish to get an an educator.
I do plan to create future videos showing the actual process but there are definitely videos on UA-cam showing you the actual process because thats how I learned. You just have to search for exactly what you need help with.

Don't be nervous. I used a template to create a copyright page inside of my planners. But you can go to the actual copyright site and file for a copyright if that makes you feel more comfortable.
You automatically retain copyrights to anything that you create. So I didn't feel the need to go that far and file.

You just need to have your own bar code. Then you own it.
Hello... I have questions... I want to create a planner... do i or can i copyright to protect my planner pages. Also if I publish or sell it on etsy or kdp... is that protecting your creation?
The moment you design or create something new you automatically retain copyright's to your product. If I am being honest even WITH copyright it is hard to keep someone from stealing your IP. Them moment they get your digital file, they can essentially do what they want with it.
I have heard that its not even worth pursuing it legally due to everything involved. So I would recommend being very strategic in your price points and with any digital product you choose to sell.
Also if you plan on using Amazon KDP, keep in mind that the moment you add your product to their platform, they have in their conditions that they can resell your IP to third parties EVEN if you archive the product. There is no way to fully remove your product and they will always have the ability to resell it.

How do you sell on Amazon KDP your own Spiral bound notebooks supplied by Lulu Printing? What us tye step by step process? Thankx🩷
You would have to provide your own inventory outside of KDP because they do not currently offer spiral bound printing.
I have not tried to sell my spiral bound planners on Amazon yet so I am not sure about the actual process to do that.
