  • This Act I recording gives us a glimpse of what Wagner singing was like before WW2.
It makes me want to have a time machine...

I think this must have been the first Wagner I ever heard....I borrowed some records (yes, LPs, it was that long ago) from the Public Library when I was 13.....and it was the most exciting experience I'd had in the entire 13 years of my life!!

    Absolutely beautiful tone, remarkable performances.
My favorite by far. If only I could build a time machine, I would go back in time to hear these two superb singers.

irisblue-Quite true, and so well said. That was one of the reasons why his voice remained awesome until he was VERY old. Best wishes, and good listening.

I have this recording on CD. It is my favorite recording of anything period. I've never heard another cast that even touches it. Melchior at his absolute best!

I don’t even care for Wagner much, but THIS sweeps me away. It is overwhelming.

Brilliantly sung and conducted, this will never be surpassed - the though Vinay/Resnik under Krauss come darn close.

      I like Lorenz/Teschemacher, Völker/Müller, Treptow/Konetzi, Windgassen/Brouwenstijn far better.

This version is undoubtedly a reference for the couple Siegmund/Sieglinde + I also love Vinay/Resnik in Krauss 53. Yet, I find that Kaufman is so good here (and Eva-Maria Westbroek is excellent - I've seen her twice in the role this year at met and ROH) that he stands up to the best.

    This recording is amazing!!!
My favorite wagnerian heldentenor is Max Lorenz, though!

Apparently the new Seigfired in the 2008 Bayreuth Ring is the new true Heldentennor
