  • I was CERTAIN that I'd never get to see one of these GMH-sourced, V8 powered Isuzu sedans, BUT I DID!! This car, believe it or not, was on the bucket list, and it's a very short list with just 4 entries. There's a whole lot in this video; DO NOT MISS A FRAME. Also, there's a whole lot to read about the car on my first ever WasabiCars Blog post: wasabicars.com/...

HQ Statesmans were sold in Mexico as the Chevrolet Caprice. Made in Australia in LHD & fitted with a different (mexican made) front cone which had (from memory) Vertically stacked rectangular headlights.
Off topic, several thousand EH Holdens were sold in the US.

Qotd: I was on my way home from school today when I saw an R32 gtr pulling out of a McDonald's parking lot, which is a rare thing in Canada. Man did that make my day. I have always loves skylines and I've seen so many videos of them on youtube. But seeing one in person (for me) is just unreal.

Awesome video, when I was in College (high school) this fellow named Brad had a yellow HQ Monaro, and everyone thought it was the fastest car in history, he was definitely more popular because of that car!! I am excited because I have just secured a job in a new career.

Fantastic. The seats are marvelous. This and a Roadpacer could make a fine pair of machines. Wow.
A thing that did make me excited was the six months I had of owning and driving a 2003 Honda Insight five-speed. It was a really fun car, comfortable, great to drive, and I still get excited seeing one on the road. (Mine was totaled in a car versus car collision. I was fine, albeit quite angry to lose the car...)

Looks like the reversing lights are an add on for the JDM. Australian HQ's never had them. Reversing lights as seen on the Mazda Roadpacer video are also add-on items.

They are standard South East Asia Ford and English European Union Mark I Escort and Cortina reversing lights. My grandad New Zealand assembled 1971 1300 Escort Delux two door had them.

What would make me that happy? Getting back my HZ Pseudo-Monaro station wagon. She was fitted out from new with a lot of Monaro options, as well as the power rear window, one-tonner rear springs, a lovely 308 engine with M-21 four-speed manual gearbox and gold Cheviot turbine rims. She was a plain-wrapper chocolate brown all over, and had such a smooth engine, I could drive her out from under my parents' bedroom at 4am to go to work and she wouldn't wake them up. I wish I still had her...

      @wasabicars  4 роки тому

Oh, damn. That sounded like a cool as hell car. These things happen though, don't they? How long did you have it, and how long ago did you part with it? Did you ever spot it again in the wild?

    • @cassandrafoxx4171
      @cassandrafoxx4171 4 роки тому

@@wasabicars I know where it still is. I had it from '97 to '99. The crankshaft in the engine snapped just before no.5 bearing. If I'd had the tools and a place to work, I could had pulled the engine myself and rebuilt it *sigh* sadly, I didn't. I sold it to a slightly-older gent who wanted it to use as a tow-car for his tricked-out HZ GTS drag car, so he put a new engine in my/his wagon, and he's had it ever since. The body was and is still pristine, he's just upgraded the engine and gearbox when he's needed to. I wish I still had it, but there's no doubt he's treated the old girl with lots of TLC and beautiful BHP options.

She was my third Kingswood wagon, btw. The first was an HQ wagon that I owned for six months, then she got stolen on me. The police eventually found her shell in a Perth wrecking yard. My second was a lovely gold-and-white HJ that I optioned out with a lot of HJ Statesman parts, including the dashboard with a wood-grained fascia and an almost-Monaro set of instruments, and WB tail-lights, for the reversing lights.

I think I was just as happy and excited as you were when I spotted the Nissan Skyline GT-R V-spec BNR32 in my hometown blasting by and it took me two months to find out it is be owned by someone I actually know. After that I still haven't lost my excitement but still haven't visited the guy nor have I taken photos of the Skyline yet. It's the ALCO PA, of which 297 were built between 1946 and 1953 and only 5 are left. It is considered by many to be the most beautiful diesel locomotive ever built. So, I googled something totally random about Isuzu diesel engines and this video came up. Of course, I had to watch it! I've been watching your videos for a couple of years, now, and I've been going back through some of the older ones. But in this video, you asked what would make us as happy as you were after seeing the statesman. Well, here's my answer. 😂 When possible, show us what the keys for some of these cars look like! I'm curious as to if the keys for this were branded GM, GMH, Isuzu, or something else. I'm a bit of a lock & key nerd... I've been collecting locks & keys for over 30 years and it's turned into me doing locksmith work as a side job. So I'm always curious to see what the keys for certain cars look like. And unfortunately with cars as uncommon as this... Google images isn't much help. :)

G-day Daniel! wow! i couldn't believe you loved this car so much, but as i said on facebook, it's very nice indeed. i wish i'll see a holden at least one time in my life, they seem very, very well made and with good taste.
question of the day: there are a lot of things that makes me happy, but one of those are getting things that remind me to past days, for example, 2 days ago i went to the antique shop street that is fairly close to my house, and there was an old japanese bicycle in really good shape, that typical cruising bike with a basket and no gears, i want it so bad, it even has all its labels in japanese and it says showa 63, so it's not so old and unfortunately it's red (i want it silver), but it reminded me to my last night in japan when i wanted to ride a bike and followed my uncle to the convenience store, and ended up driving arround to the pachinko parking lot next to the shop for several minutes and freezing myself. but anyways, finding that bike made me as excited and happy as you were with this car, i'll probably go buy it on saturday :)

G'day Dan'l. Sweet looking Isuzu (Holden HQ) Statesman. I agree with you regarding old-school Holden vs. newer Holdens. Perhaps the only newer Holden I'd consider would be the VB Commodore and the VH Commodore. Other than that, forget it. With quality control being thrown out the window and everything being made in Korea by Daewoo (of all car companies) Holden deserves to sink into oblivion along with every other Australian car company.
I've never seen a Holden of this vintage here in the USA. I don't know why. The way Holdens were built, for Australian roads of the time, they could've made great American cars as well. :)

I also remember when Volkswagen produced interesting cars, cars I'd consider driving. My favourite were the rear-engine VWs, like the VW Vanagon (as it was called here in North America.

+Jason Carpp The Australian car industry has been in decline since the 1980's. One major reason was the the then Labour senator John Button who introduced the 'Button Car Plan" Basically all tariff protection was removed from the local manufactures to allow more imported cars and this was supposed to make the industry more competitive. Some blame the unions due to the demands they placed on Holden and Ford where workers wages where concerned. EPA regulations, work cover regulations, compulsory superannuation and many more expensive overheads the companies had to pay. Don't get me wrong those aren't bad things but when you're competing to make a product against an overseas manufacturer who is not having to pay these overheads and is paying workers a fraction of what Australian workers where being paid you're not in the game. I also think Holden and Ford's perception of what Australians wanted as a family car was another reason behind their decline. They continued building cars based on the 60' and 70's ideology of what a family car was. Back then if you had a family and maybe a boat or a caravan you needed a car like the Falcon,Kingswood or Valiant. Now days with luxury SUV's ,people movers and 4WD's like Hilux,Navara, BT50 and many more that traditional family car has changed and Commodore and Falcon don't fit what modern families want. The demise of the car industry in Australia is one thing but overall since the beginning of the 1980's so much manufacturing in Australia has disappeared. It seems Australian governments believe that importing everything from overseas is better for the country.

I read somewhere that they had a 350 Chev bolted into it but now other sources telling me that it has the Holden 308 cubic inch V8 engine in it,the car was assembled by Isuzu in Japan,
My favourite Kingswood was the HQ model, I remember my dad & I brought one home second hand in 1980,it was a metallic green wagon which had only the 202 cubic inch in line six in it but the car shone like anything in the sunlight, at 2 1/2 years of age, I could not see over the front dashboard & it was a column shift automatic front bench seat model.
It was needed because my parents had a growing family & the LC Torana was too small and clapped out at that point, it was stolen because it had the aussie GM 4 speed manual transmission which was fitted behind the 173 cubic inch six as they were a very rare & very sought after transmission by car thieves in the 1970's,the insurance companies repairer could only find a used Opel 4 speed unit to replace that one ,the Opel unit was also fitted into the Torana.
I liked the ergonomics of the HQ Holdens which were far ahead of its time in 1972 but they had to go Cadillac with its appearance in the HJ Holden so that was a bit of a backwards step in the ergonomics department I think.
I do think what GM has done in Australia is a disaster so I hope by 2021-2022 that they have the problem reversed regarding the production of Holdens, the ZB Commodore is overpriced with the latest wagon only being available with a 235 kilowatt 3.6 litre V6 engine in it for the cost of about $47,000 AUD when in the VF range a person could buy the 6.2 litre V8 SSV Commodore for about $43,000 AUD which has a 304 kilowatt power output,no one wants the liftback sedan which has the 191 kilowatt turbocharged 2 litre 4 cylinder engine in it,Opel are throwing their Insignia in the garbage in 2021 which means no more of them is going to be rebadged as the Holden Commodore, they are actually more expensive to build in Germany.
If that was a good idea in Australia I would've bolted the Nissan RB20DET engine into my VL Commodore but I went for an N/A RB30DE option instead which puts out more power than the stock RB20DET engine, many people did the RB20 swap only to be disappointed because they didn't make any allowances for lowering the diff ratio from the stock 3.45:1 ratio down to the NZ 2 litre VLs 4.11:1 ratio which the smaller 2 litre engine needs, back in 2003 I decided if I can keep the 3 litre capacity, I'll be better off, there was also an insurance loophole because the engine wasn't turbocharged & still retained the RB30 bottom end, they were reluctant to insure an RB20DET powered VL Commodore because they were classed as "heavily modified".
The stock VE-VF 3.6 litre V6 Commodore puts out more power than the new sedan at 210 kilowatts or the 3 litre V6 matches it at 190 kilowatts.
I started to like Commodores when my uncle bought a 3 year old VB Commodore in 1982 before my auntie split up with him, about 4 years later she bought a used VH Commodore with the blue 202 fitted,it felt like it had more performance than the HQ Holden as it ran the 12 port cylinder head & twin barrel carby whereas the red 202 in the HQ ran the 9 port cylinder head & single barrel Bendix-Stromberg carby, the car felt more compact although it retained the HQ's roominess inside,it was 250 kilograms lighter at 1150 kgs than the 1400kg HQ wagon which explains why the red 202 would've been a bit of a slug in the HQ compared the blue 202 in the VH.
The big improvement was when they fitted the Nissan RB30 engine in the VL,that made it a beautiful car to drive, the extra 300 or so cc's made the EFI 202 engine a bit more torquier than that engine but it was thirstier in the VK Commodore even in EFI form.
What I'm pissed off with is the fact I have a 16 year old VY SS Commodore with a non MAFless tuned LS1 engine in it including exhaust & gearing mods,it matches the performance of either the LS2 powered VZ or L76 powered VE Commodore @ 276 kilowatts of power at the flywheel (41 kilowatts over stock) ,Opel had no intentions of fitting a Chevy V8 engine into the ZB Commodore,so it has more power than any stock option available at the moment,no one is buying them even at the EOFY (end of financial year) sale so they have become the most unpopular car in Australia.
They had the 330 kilowatt twin turbocharged V6 powered option in mind but no one is even bothering with the stock N/A Commodore.

Did you ever see any of the original Holden imports to Japan? I mean the ones that were Holden badged , not badge engineered. I know they were imported in small numbers. I am of Australian origin, live in Taiwan (actually have lived here longer than in Oz and am a Taiwan citizen now). I have seen Holdens in many other Asian countries, sometimes with Holden badges (mostly in SE Asia) but I have never seen one in Taiwan even though they were once imported here and am pretty sure none are left on the roads here. I know Hawaii had some Holdens with left hand steering, the HR is confirmed, I also know that Holden EJ was sold in Asia with left hand steering, notably in a part of Russia or some other part of Asia or middle East, it ran as taxi most of these.
The EJ was also sold in USA, I have confirmed a Ute found in a barn, and I believe that one is among the rarest and the very few left to be found today, there is no telling if there is any more of that kind of vehicle in the entire US.

As for the one you mention, not even one. Japan is THE WORST place for old cars. There are no parts for old cars either. Why? Because after 10 - 15 years they sell their cars to the auctions, but most get crushed.

Interesting that they never made a rotary variant.
I know lsuzu wernt into rotaries but its interesting that mazda marketed HJs with rotarties a few years later. I was a Holden employee and l saw several lsuzu Jackaroos in Aust be fitted with V6 Buick engines for testing. I got to drive one at the proving ground and it was much better then anything else being sold. Apparently the noise and vibration of the car wasnt acceptable and we got the underpowered 4 cyl instead... (oh what couldhave been)

From the front it looks a little like a '71/'72 Pontiac LeMans. Then you turn it around to the tail and I'm thinking 1967 Mercury Cyclone.
What would make me feel that excited? Hmm... Does my comment have to be safe for work reading? :)
