I love Brittany. Glad you had a good time. Interesting fact (I hope). In the late 19th/ early 20th century French onion sellers used to come over to Britain. Don’t ask me why British onions weren’t considered to be as good. Anyway, my grandmother told me that her mother could understand the Breton onion sellers and they could conduct a rudimentary conversation in Breton/Welsh. Seems there’s quite a lot of shared vocabulary between Breton and Welsh. It’s a shame the French haven’t given the Breton language the same protection that Welsh has had since the 70s.
Ynys, my grandmother also told me about the Breton onion sellers & how she ( or maybe her mother) could understand them. Like you I’ve no idea why they came to Wales, maybe their onions just tasted better?😊
Oh my GOSH you guys! I LOVE this conversation SO MUCH. Thank you so much for sharing about the onion sellers. I never would have known but its incredible that they were able to understand each other. SO COOL! Linguistics is such a fascinating thing. Truly amazing! Please keep the cool facts coming!
