- Today the bulls are out of here, thank goodness! I have some cull cows going with them so will make it easier to get them on the truck....I hope.
The angry fella almost run me over coming back out of the truck again.
New upgrades mean we are edging closer and closer to being ready to extend the milking shed
Love your vids but the handler had no need to prong the cow. Never understood shocking the last one as they can only go as fast as those in front. Have a word
Yep I know what you mean, however he didn’t actually shock it, he was using as more of a stick (I watched it a couple of times as I knew someone might pick it up).
He’s an excellent stock man, he’s transported a lot of my stock and he’s honestly one of the best, takes his time and is patient.
I don’t like the prodder too much, but it’s handy at times.

Hey Andrew is there anything to stopping you going out the other way over towards your Grandfathers old walk thru cowshed. Nice video and you should have stayed inside the loading ramp and took the bull on as it would have been good front row rugby training 😂😢😅😊

Here in Queensland Australia, we milked 280 plus twice a day,( with a further 30 or so springers) with a double pulsating system. But only had 8 bails.
So it took a few hours to get them all through. But LOVED it. ( the best childhood, growing up on a dairy farm)
It’s a great lifestyle to grow up with, I bet milking took a while though 👍

I think you should consider the new parlour with the cows exiting front out
That way the cows exit much more quickly saving a load of time
Would be nice, but to do that you need a really wide shed to have the room and we don’t.
If we were going brand new it’s something to consider, but it’s also another thing that can break, gates are pretty simple 🤷
Jersey bulls are notoriously some of the more dangerous bulls. Definitely don’t miss them in that aspct
Yes agree. Mine just returned last week from the heifers and they're so disruptive and loud compared to the beef bulls.

We used to rear calves on cows that weren't really good yielders. Then send them away when dry.

I'm in the US, and most dairies here have Holsteins (or Friesians as you call them), but I love Jerseys, pretty cows!

If you do a upgrade on a pad for the truck check with your milk company to there requirements,I have been in construction for a lot of years and am now retired but have projected manage from earth works to finish on dairy sheds, you guys don’t need any surprises after completing, hope this is helpful all the best going forward merry Christmas to all

Cows are such beautiful creatures, and I truly wish humans could learn to let them live their lives peacefully, free from harm and interference. They are not commodities; they are living, sentient beings. I wish we could allow them to live their lives peacefully, without being exploited or harmed.
Hmm, so if not for meat & milk, where do you propose we keep ALL the cattle? They're not meant to be pets and don't think you'd want them pooping all over your property, and trust me, they poop a LOT!
Yes im feeling another payrisr from fonterra sometime in late january early February.
Just went through me emails.
Last 9 auctions going back to mid august 6 were up, 2 down and 1 unchanged.
Whole milk powder was $ 2548 in mid August, now $3207 a 25.9% increase since August 15th.
So hopefully steady increases even at 1-3% over january 😊😊
And I want another 50 cents 😅

Probably still 2 herds as the feed pad is in the wrong place, and I’m not sure if I would be able to fit them all on the yard in one herd
how old are the bulls ? Angus breeder here in Aus and we run our bulls for Three years before moving them on .

Usually carry 20-25% replacements so have to make room for them every year.
Say 8-10% will be empty
So 10-25% culls
What is the amount of milk production per cow for you to consider which ones to keep and or let go?
Depends a lot on production compared to same aged animals
I saw almost all your cattle’s bones and that would mean they ain’t getting lots to eat I hope you feed them cause mine is black angus and they are pretty fat and there’s not one bone showing in any of them
That may be your opinion but I stand with Once a Day Farmer's father as they are God's Son as well as they are fed yes Grass and alternative feed as the Lord will provide his son the feed to feed his Cows as the Cows belong to the Lord Not Farmers dairy farmers are just an instrument God uses to care for HIS Cows as 1 Corinthians 3:9 says.
You need to feed your animals.....especially milkers. They don't look very healthy. Shame on you.

Would you milk twice a day if you had the bigger parlour Andrew?. If you could milk them in one and half hours? It will pay for the job much quicker. Even to milk one herd twice a day?.
That’s the mis conception, if I were to milk them TAD I wouldn’t necessarily do any more production, and then they would be walking more so more lameness, heat stress and repro rates would probably get a bit worse.
I don’t want to milk TAD, and we are farming a system that works, jerseys do adapt to OAD pretty well.
We are actually doing more now than dad was milking 2x, all though we are feeding more so hard to compare.

@@TheOnceADayFarmer yes Andrew, I get it now with the Jerseys, I'm used to a black and white herd doing 9000 litres. They would never work on OAD,and you are right, my replacement rate is about 22%.

Hi Andrew what sort of money do you get from the bulls and cows. I saw on Kiwi farmer he got $5.50/kg for bulls and $3.50 for cows less costs.

He doesn't zap them much, he uses it as more of a stick unless he has too
@@TheOnceADayFarmer it doesn’t matter if he zaps them or not the cows come to recognise it automatically and they panic. I use a piece of inch round blue pipe about 4 feet long and if I walk in the fields with it they automatically start moving where I want them..
I am the same with horses and crops or spurs there is just no need to have them as horses also respond to other aids.. even my sheep come running for what is essentially an almost empty bag of sheep pellets because they get used to the sound of the bag..

Nah not really, it’s easy to jump off and we’re always thinking of plan B if something was to happen 👍
Why do you guys only milk once a day, I milk cows in Canada and people normally milk 2-3 times a day.
Suites our system. We are low input low output and don’t see a reduction in production milking OAD compared to TAD for us 👍

Unfortunately No is the answer as the cows need to be milked even on public holidays Christmas Day Boxing day New Years day Day after New years day Auckland anniversary day Waitangi day Good Friday Easter Sunday Easter Monday Kings Birthday Matariki Day all the holidays some of which I have mentioned all dairy farmers are still working even on sundays still milking for some of them as some operate all year.
