So I did a talking head review of some Focal Shape 40s on my channel that came out a few weeks ago (2 days after this video, though I edited it a week prior) and I gave a shout out to your channel because I was talking about the "relay click" that Focals have when they auto-shut-off (which I remember you making a point in one of your videos about that being an issue if you're recording in the room), but the weird part was that I MADE A CAR ANALOGY in my video too haha. Different analogy but pretty funny. Anyway, been enjoying watching your studio come together! #goals haha

Colt could you please explain this to me as a beginner mixer in a bad room who doesn't understand what you are saying.
If I set my Pro-Q to band pass and sweep through the whole spectrum I can hear every frequency so I'm struggling to make sense of what you mean when you say 'I can hear every frequency in this room', what are you actually saying when you say this that I'm not understanding?
Thank you for all your help!

I don’t think I would use soothe for masters, more of a case by case thing but it’s a resonance suppressor and if you are in the mastering stage I believe there shouldn’t be any unwanted resonances by that point.

Need to watch this after work today, but can I just say, you have an amazing work ethic to go with your knowledge. Aside from competing the remodel itself, just getting that studio back together in the seemingly short amount of time that you did? Wow. That’s a crazy amount of work. Do you even sleep? 😂
I really appreciate this channel, especially as a 47 year old electrical engineer turned IT manager, musician and home recording hobbyist. Thanks for being so willing to share.

The room is a new tool. You’re getting used to a new/better tool. I’m going through this at the moment too, not that I upgraded as much as I changed the positioning of a lot of things in my room and that vastly improved the response. Adding treatment as I go to address issues that I’m finding when things don’t translate as well, but otherwise it feels like where I am on my journey as well. Feels validating to hear someone who’s reached a point in their career that I’m aspiring to get to has some of the same struggles. Thank you for posting this and being super candid about it.

I moved into a proper room for the first time 6 months ago and the thing you’re describing, the unnerving clarity, was a game changer for me. The thing you described, hearing problems that you never even knew were has been a huge learning process for me, and an epic one! I already was delivering mixes that satisfied clients, but I’m starting to hit a whole new level of sound that is super exciting. And like you described, the translation is just epic. Like now I’m genuinely surprised if it doesn’t translate well haha

If it wasn't for shitty sounding rooms, plugin makers would be out of business. Same for lower end speaker makers, and other magic things to help you mix better. You can't mix what you cannot hear.

    • @cmatte82
      @cmatte82 2 місяці тому

Yeah I’m pretty sure I read some advice 20 years ago when I was first getting into recording that mics and monitors are two of the most important parts of the studio. Plus the room. I was young and naive. So I’ve spent way too much on stuff that doesn’t matter. If I were to start over today, I absolutely would spend the money for high end monitors and room treatment first. You absolutely can do a great mix with stock plugins.

Having the SSL BUS+ for 2 years now I gotta say that it is really good and I cant' live without it. And a tip which you probably figure it out by now, best release time on mix bus duties is the Auto1 or Auto2, unless you do parallel compression with fast release and having another compressor after it with a slow release time (which can be done in the mastering process as well)

I just re-did my studio with a lot of new gear and honestly, the hardest part was establishing a new WORKFLOW. So I'm actually not surprised that with all the changes, it takes some time for you to get adjusted 🤔 (and after struggling for a year, I actually bought back some stuff that I had sold a year ago after I thought I don't need it any more as "I have something better now", but that stuff turned out it was essential for how I work, so maybe that's something else you're going to experience).

Always love these videos. I was in the same situation when I changed over just to the Dangerous Audio 2 Bus-LT and moving to mixing hybrid.... just breaking out into analogue world was not only life changing for my mixes but also shocking as to the same feeling you had about now being the weakest link in my mix process. My speed of mixing went down drastically since now I was hearing things I never was. I will say this, after about 3-4 weeks of mixing and now being able to hear issues, I was able to get my speed back and I could even say that in projects I was also tracking... I could now finetune at the tracking stage with tones across the whole recording realm it now made my mixing easier and faster. Speed will come back but that humbling experience is exactly how I felt also!

Great video, Colt! I know exactly how you feel; for me, it's when I introduced the Trinnov: suddenly, I could hear all the low end, and, the stereo image was so much more stable; also, the speakers sounded 'longer'....so weird, but, the sound coming from my monitors gives the impression the speakers are floor to ceiling (they're not). I still get that impression when I turn the processing on and off. And, same as you, it slowed me down to begin with, but now, I'm faster, and, same as you, the translation is perfect! I don't even bother checking on other systems anymore; I have complete trust in my monitors and my room.

This made me think of one of my favorite Bowie quotes to reference when producing artists... "If you feel safe in the area you’re working in, you’re not working in the right area. Always go a little further into the water than you feel you're capable of being in. Go a bit out of your depth, and when you don't feel that your feet are quite touching the bottom, you're just about in the right place to do something exciting."

Man that’s so it. It happened the same when I got hi end speakers and when I finished the acoustic treatment. It never gets easier, your ears get better so the work gets more detail oriented. So you have to get faster at detail work (which is always harder).

Colt, it will just take time for you to settle in. A ton has happened since you have used the room and new set up. I noticed you had to say pumped at the end of the video. Good one!!! Hahaha. I like it

Room acoustics I’ve always thought the most important thing to get perfect and this just validates that.
Currently I will start one in my flat.
But will not be able to make a perfect room in acoustics, but will try and then constantly ready to jump to a room I can completely design from the ground up

How are you connecting/linking the Mtrx Studio and the HD I/O together? I volunteer for a Recording studio at my college and they have a Mtrx Studio. Often they run into scenarios where they run out of inputs. But I did notice they had an HD I/O in storage from long ago. Is it possible to link the 2 together to get more Ins? Can you show how?

Do you use analogue summing or do you feel running the mix through your signature pre’s covers that ?

Hay Colt, great video as usual. Have you had the time to compare old vs new mix in your new space.. What would you correct in to old mixes? Sometimes to perfect is too perfect?

How do your old mixes sound in the room? I am curious. I would also love to hear one of your new mixes.

@Colt, first off I am by no means a pro mixer or producer, but I'm also not coming into this without experience. Having said that, here is how I think about everything related to the time it takes now, or what you're hearing now in this video. What was it like when you got your first "real" compressor for vocal chain and how did that impact "what you heard and the time it takes"? What was it like when you got that mix bus eq?
My point is that each of those likely caused you to have to learn new things, hear differently, but then you simply added them to your bag of tricks (and templates, workflows, etc). BUT those all likely focus on one part of a mix or a set of frequencies. You just did the WHOLE ROOM which (Captain Obvious here) impacts every frequency, every instrument, etc.
AND I have no doubt you'll have all that figured out sooner rather than later. I think the biggest problem you're going to have is listening to older mixes in the new room. ;)

you are where i was 20 years ago when i built my first world class control room. atc based surround system by roger darcy.. you have a no excuses misx and tracking situation and are now retuning focuc to your brain. the next phases, where i have been ever sice, is it is nothing about the equipment... gimme a sm57 and a decent converter and i can make a kick ass record... having great equipment is like topping the mountian, then realzing its not the equipmetnt, it is you is returning to the valley.

@Colt Capperrune So, are you saying you've got the RB2 as your room now but feel a bit like Sergio Perez? (Big F1 fan here too! ) Super happy for you and wish I had half of your skills! Thanks for all of your content. We learn from it, but even better, we get inspired by it!

Also, from you awesome video on TraceAudio's custom patchbay labels, have you spoken with anybody there (Ben) in a while? I've emailed him a few times, and he hasn't been responding. Thanks!

I definitely have. I spent around 15 hours critically listening to music before this mix. And a lot of it was my old stuff. Which I could hear all of the problems, even problems and commercial releases.

I know what you mean. I have a well treated room, ATC monitors and a trinnov. I think of it like editing photo/video on an 8k monitor while knowing almost everyone is going to see it at 1080 or maybe 4k at best. At what point am I working on things that’ll never be “seen?”
Andrew Scheps said he only worries about making the main instruments sound the best and doesn’t spend nearly as much time on everything else.
I understand your dilemma, I’m there too!
