Steve. You have changed my life sir and I mean that. By using your method of listening and reading rather than getting hung up in grammar and conjugation, I have improved my French immensely.
I finally got an online tutor from italki weekly and have noticed an improvement in just 4 weeks. All this by using the time I have in my car and at work to emmerse myself in listening.

It’s about Steve learning languages in general and then him helping Ukrainian people, specifically in eastern Ukraine, due to the conflict with Russia. So it’s a political topic and he did really well especially since he considers his Russian and Ukrainian to be worse than 10 other languages he speaks.

This will be fun to watch, I can understand like 60%-80% so it is a lot of guesswork.
EDIT: Really impressive being there all alone like that. And it is not like Ukrainian is you first or second language either.

I can understand 100% of the Russian, and 60% of the Ukrainian hehe. Steve makes a few case ending mistakes but the message still gets across :)
@@Re3iRtH Czech speaker actually, but I know few common Russian words (about 50 maybe? But the most common 50 so they appear often).
Watching this made me realize that learning Russian or Ukrainian should not be that hard for me with lots of input, if I decide to put the time in it. It is not hard to guess most of the content from familiar sounding words if the conversation is not rushed.

Very cool Steve. I'm trying to learn french, specifically french from Quebec, and I was wondering what type of resources would you recommend for listening, and working through. I've noticed that most programs (including LingQ) teach standard Parisian French and not Quebec french.
Interesting to watch, but really annoying they didn’t have subtitles and instead had a districting signer.

The accent isn't the best and Ukrainian was mixed up a lot with Russian and vice versa, but I'm really impressed though!
The people who have learned any slavic language are the heroes in my opinion. It is sometimes tricky even for the native speakers to talk without the mistakes.

Nothing special. Sreve is in Ukraine now. He started learning Ulrainian 5 years ago. There was a TV show then, Schuster-Live. (after the name of the ancor). Half of the guests spoke Ukrainian, another half spoke Russian. Steve understood Russian and did not understood Ukrainian. He wanted to hear the both sides in the Russian-Ukrainian conflict. That's why he started learning ukrainian. Steve also regulary helps to one East Ukrainian village with some money. His two she-partners from Dnipro-city buy reading glasses and such things for the elderly people in the village. Also some things are regulary bought for the children there.

@@chicoti3 , no wonder, I'm Ukrainian. But I adore Steve because of his love to languages. But, I guess, the public in the studio was not up to the mark. The indifference was seen on their faces. Only people trying to learn foreign languages by themselves can price Steve's achivements.

Your Russian is soooo good (one of my parents is Russian, so I speak Russian too), btw have u ever tried to learn Finnish language? I learned Swedish quite fast but have been struggling with Finnish for years.
Avyer Sord oh really, feel so sorry for you, he actually told a lot of interesting facts there... For me his pronunciation was really good, but maybe your ears are not trained well enough so you could understand different dialects and accents. In Swedish language we have hundreds of dialects and in Denmark people from different areas can’t understand each other sometimes.
There are some very distinct accents of Swedish like , Listerländska, Jamska, Elfdalian and the Nerpes accent to mention a few but the vast majority of Swedish people speak fairly similar accents to each other.
Felix Wow... impressive! There are Swedish speaking Finns in Finland as well :) and some of their dialects are sooo crazily different.
I'm pretty sure Steve hasn't learned Finnish yet. I actually started learning it a few months ago and can already pick some words here and there when I listen to Finnish, though I'm still working on it, and I think I can offer some guidance. It seems people struggle with Finnish because Finns speak differently than they write/type, so people learn more of the standard language and not spoken language which may also be your struggle as well. Maybe you've noticed that but don't know where or how to learn more of the spoken language. I started out learning standard Finnish and early on I found a good channel featuring a native speaker who makes videos explaining the differences between the standard and spoken languages, and has street interviews to help with listening practice, and I re-watch them often to try listening to the way people actually talk with each other. I speak Russian, I didn't know how similar Ukrainian is to Russian! Seems like I can get fluent in a couple weeks.
I am surprised how similar it is to Czech when the speaker is not rushing through. I bet it is more similar to Russian, but I understood a lot.
No, you can not. I mean, I'm a native Russian speaker, but when I read Ukranian books I have to look at my dictionary at almost every sentence.
@@ivanivanov5530 Well, my Russian listening and speaking are native level but I never learned to read and write because I went overseas before age seven. From this I take it the languages are remarkably similar.

@@Re3iRtH I mean, the languages ARE remarkably similar, but it doesn't mean you can get fluent in a couple of weeks. Usually, when a Russian speaker listens to Ukranian speech he or she can easily get the general meaning (somebody did something to somebody else). But all the details are lost most of the time because Ukranian vocabulary is different. But grammar really is very similar and intuitively comprehensible to a Russian person.

All languages are worth it, though some exotic ones may be difficult/impossible to find resources for - fair enough I guess. It's a shame that some other languages seem to be shunned by a lot of people despite existing resources. I'm learning some like Icelandic, Lithuanian, and Cambodian right now. Not everyday we hear people learning those. I asked Steve a while ago what he thought about learning those languages despite not being on Lingq, and I believe he said he may not learn them as he thinks there aren't many speakers. Very unfortunate. Thinking more about the quantity of speakers over the quality of relationships is like saying some (kind of lesser known like the ones above) languages aren't worth it. Imagine meeting somebody and thinking in the end "I wish I knew even a little bit of their language".
@@michaelrespicio5683 Personally, I like reading and technology. Good luck finding Khmer literature after Pol Pot, and don't overload yourself keeping up with Lithuanian technological advancements.
Joking aside, is it even possible to learn those languages using an input-based approach?

Интересное интервью. Стив, Вы большой молодец. Но я так и не поняла, что Вы думаете о двуязычии? Я, например, считаю, что русский должны поддерживать и развивать. К сожалению, многие не знают, как писать по-русски грамотно. Тем более это международный язык. Всегда лучше знать больше, чем один язык!
В чем он молодец? Его русский на довольно плохом уровне. Очень тяжело было его слушать и понимать что он там пытается донести людям. Главное не количество языков, главное качество.
@@sord5 Я преподаю русский как иностранный и понимаю как ему сложно. Тем более выступать на телевидении. Есть над чем работать, конечно. Всегда проще критиковать. Когда говоришь на нескольких иностранных языках, начинаешь переоценивать многие вещи: самое важное - понять друг друга, это и есть цель коммуникации. А ошибки на иностранном языке неизбежны на любом уровне владения.
@@sord5 , у него русский - девятый по качеству. И начал он его изучать в шестьдесят с хвостиком. Я, например, полностью солидарен со Стивом, что главное - понимание языка. А русский и украинский он понимает отлично. И может выразить свою мысль на любом из них. С ошибками, но понять можно. А на высоком уровне у него французский, китайский (мандарин), японский. И ещё несколько. Но, боюсь, что у Вас качественный только русский.
Так русский поддерживают и развивают. Есть Россия - великая страна. Вот пусть поддерживает и развивает. А мы с удовольствием будем изучать русский. А украинский поддерживают и развивают в Украине (на Украине, как иногда говорят в России). Какой еще язык, кроме русского, поддерживают и развивают в России?
И почему страны, соседние с Россией, должны поддерживать и развивать русский?

@@tschewm1353 есть разница - в Украине многие люди говорят по-русски с рождения. Это язык этнического населения. Поэтому его надо развивать и поддерживать. Я живу в русскоязычном регионе и уровень преподавания русского у нас на низком уровне. Его даже не во всех школах изучают. А учителей русского языка вообще чуть ли не приравняли к врагам народа. Это ненормально.

Funny, everyone I met in Krasnohorivka was able to speak Ukrainian although mostly they spoke Russian.

Ви дивіться не на канал, а на гостя. Стів познайомився заочно з Ганапольським, коли останній ще працював на Ехо Москви.. Стів слухав Ехо Москви з метою вивчення російської. Ехо Москви дає аудіо і текст кожної своєї передачі. А це - основне в підході Стіва (і не лише його) до вивчення будь-якої іноземної мови. Звук і текст.
Потім коли Ганапольський був у Ванкувері, Стів з власної ініціативи зустрівся з ним. Так що вони - давні знайомі. Цього літа Стів вирішив відвідати Україну. І природньо, що його запросив на телебачення його давній знайомий, Ганапольський.
До речі, в українській мові немає "самий". Потрібно казати "найзаконтаченніший", "найкінченніший". Граматично буде більш вірно, хоча слова дещо дивні для українського вуха.
Я дуже Вами розчарований! Інтерв'ю найбільшому пропагандистському смітнику країни... та ще і цій рошенівській собаці. Ви хоча б попередньо здійснюйте перевірку ЗМІ яким будете давати інтерв'ю, а то с таким підходом, незабаром будете давати інтерв'ю каналу росія 24.
