I'm 55 years old and am a former movie critic in Canada. I've loved this film ever since I saw it over 40 years ago. I've also hosted talk shows on the radio discussing cinema and The Godfather eventually became my favourite picture of all time to this day. This is the best analysis I've seen including the stories behind it. Good work, Dan.
Thank you! I try to take different approaches based on each film and I found the process of the digital restoration of The Godfather fascinating. I'm glad you enjoyed it as well!
This is an example of a great analysis of the Godfather in many respects. You've contextualized the production, post-production, and film history. whilst expressing your love for the meticulous crafting of the story. I'm thankful you have your own channel!
"I want somebody good, I mean very, very good..." You did a great job Illuminating the personal and legacy stakes involved in working with original irreplaceable footage of a classic. Best. Leo.
That was a great video. I really liked how Dan pointed out that Coppola used the process of restoration to get the scenes lit in the way his cinematography had original intended it to be. I got a lot of respect for the director for doing that. I also couldn't stop laughing when he made the connection to George Lucas and his restoration process for star wars.😊
Great video Dan! I haven't watched the Godfather properly But this was a very informative and interesting video. Especially the last bit about the film's cinematography and restoration of film.
Love the actual FILM knowledge. I've been a fan of yours since the old Movie Fights like 4 or 5 years ago, I wouldn't watch a Sceeen Junkies video unless you were involved lol. Keep up the great work, you deserve more subs than you currently have
Did you know the scene with Brando in the office in which the cat is play fighting on the Don’s lap so naturally? The cat was placed at random in one of the 7 takes and it made it in the final piece. It really adds to the Don’s loving familial role.
I've never watched it and frankly I couldn't care less if I ever did. Until I watched this video. It's now up there at the top of my must-watch list. God damnit.
It's finally here, this week was supposed to be Departed but thanks a lot for doing this now. I have seen both the restored version and original version, but that was nice to see someone going in depth about it
Just noticed this watching your review. The scene with Michael and Vito talking is perfectly mirrored in Godfather Part 3 when Michael is confessing to the priest. Very much a beginning and ending to his career as the Don of the family.
If I may add, another facet to John Cazale's passing was his relationship with Meryl Streep. I believe I read it in a New York Post article. Read it a few years ago and I remember being surprised at the notion of them as a couple, but it put another perspective on the tragedy.
2:00 My favorite high school English teacher used to quiz us students on "the author's motivation." She frequently pointed out that, invariably, it was to make money, lol. Mario's got it. 4:05 I liked Carol Burnett's version, "Lovely Story" Love means never have to say 'I Love You'.
I was looking forward to your thoughts on this one. The Godfather and Part II are by far my favorite films of all time. It's pretty hard for a film to improve upon the novel it's based on, and the Godfather did
i have seen this film so many times and i NEVER caught the Enzo the baker, son in law reference. i just thought he was a guy Vito did a favor for, but never put it together that he was the guy the beginning scene had mentioned.
Those film lists are stupid. This should be number 1 on every single list. The Godfather is the greatest movie ever made. Such a joy to watch this video and learn even more. Loved it. Would love to see you on The Critical Drinker's Happy Hour show and discussing a movie. Would be great to see.
i love this episode, one other thing this money met the beginning of the multiplex, created by Nat Taylor.,allowing movies to have longer legs. It opened in Toronto at the Imperial Six the new flagship theatre of the then Famous Players soon to be Cineplex. It started in the big room and kept moving to smaller and smaller theatres. It allowed industry to comeback from almost bankruptcy.
For the last couple of weeks they have being giving them on Showtime all 3 of them and I have watch every time and like you I just realized the same thing about the baker a couple of days ago that he was the same guy they where talking on the beginning of the movie and for the people that are calling the Snyder cut a masterpiece pay attention to a real masterpiece a set of movies that are close to 50 years all and they still are amazing people every year tell me in 50 years if people would still give a damn about the Snyder cut cause I'll doubt it
I am from India and i really loved and enjoyed your commentary on the Godfather. For me however, I saw the movie once when i was like 20 because of the hype around it, but i wasn't immensely impressed by it. Maybe it is a taste, culture thing. The movie didn't excite or engage me like parasite, vertigo or interstellar did. But let me give the movie another go.
The Godfather best movie ever, wait second even better best movie ever made The Godfather part 2, The Godfather part 3 Copolla you broke my heart, you broke my heart 😡

Regarding digital color grading/timing, are you sure The Coen Brothers were first? I'm pretty sure I remember a featurette where David Fincher showed the color grading on Se7en (1995).
Films have used color grading/timing for decades - O Brother Where Art Thou was the first film to use DI (digital intermediate) color grading for the entire film. Almost every film now goes through the DI process.
@@DanMurrellMovies Yeah, I get that color grading in general. There was a special feature on Se7en DVD and probably still the Blu-ray where they were doing dynamic digital color correction on the scene at the end of the movie, but maybe that was either 1) demonstration purposes and not used at release or 2) wasn't used for the whole film and therefore not a full DI. Thanks for the clarification!
@@JohnMC61 exactly, I said people were so mad about him boycotting original Godfather that there was no way they were gonna give him the best actor oscar he deserved for part 2. Biggest snub ever in my opinion
"I'm not going super deep into the making of ..." You spent 30 minutes on the making of "The Godfather". I'd rather hear about why you think "The Godfather" is an important movie instead of hearing the same old stories of how the movie was made.
Only stupid peoples will sad that The Godfather is better than The Godfather part 2, because stupid peoples dont understand The Godfather part 2 because The Godfather part 2 is far more complex and hard to follow, but this 2 movies are my best movies ever
I also prefer Godfather 2. Thanks to Don Corleone’s backstory (brought to life superbly by Robert De Niro), it resonated more with me on an emotional level than the first feature.
Dan Murreleone, I am honored and grateful that you have invited me to your channel on the release day of your video.

This is an offer I cannot refuse. Thank you for this retrospective Dan. The Godfather is an American movie classic.
I'm in awe of the work you put into this series. Each episode is so detailed, well researched, articulate and interesting.
I've been obsessing on the Godfather trilogy the past few weeks. Watched the first 2 twice each. Just incredible movies.

I like to imagine Dan’s shelf resembling something like the warehouse at the end of Raiders of the Lost Ark
Everything you need to know about storytelling is in this movie. It is a masterpiece, no question.
Excellent as usual, Dan. Worthy of The Godfather.
I've never seen a more immaculate cinematography put to film than in The Godfather Part 1&2
I haven't seen this for decades. I'll watch it again when the 4k disc comes out
I honestly love ‘All My Movies’ so much. Whether it’s great films or shockers. Such a great dive into all the aspects of these films. Thanks Dan!
Ah, yes, my favorite movie of all-time! Great episode!
