  • Have you noticed that nobody tends to use computers anymore? Of course, computers are still extremely popular for productivity and office use and they’re one of the most popular technologies in the world. But, when compared with smartphones, computers pale in comparison. In fact, when you take a look at the web traffic of some of the most popular websites in the world, you’ll see that most of them receive 85% or even more of their traffic from smartphones. One of the main reasons for this is younger generations, specifically Generation Z. Gen Z tend to have way more screen time than any generation that precedes them and almost all of their screen time is on smartphones. Something else to note is that computers are generally used for productivity while smartphones are more often used for scrolling the web and social media. This video explains the various reasons that computers have largely fallen out of favor in comparison to smartphones and the future of computers.

the one thing i hate is that more websites for desktops are using mobile design philosophies even though its awful to look at. youtube now has huge thumbnails that only let see 6 videos at a time. big thumbnails work for mobile but are just unnecessary on a desktop screen which is at least 4 times bigger than smartphone. i have to keep it zoomed out to make resemble how it used to be,

I use 125% zoom for Chrome on my pc. I don't have bad eyes I just like to actually see the detail in thumbnails and the buttons are small - my feed shows 5 across - oh and I use an ultrawide monitor
For me the modern design is better than it ever was before, not sure what the complaint is about, the feed used to be exactly like mobile is right now lol, the single column of videos and infinite scrolling
Depending on how many people you're subbed to, you can see the entire days sub feed with minimal scrolling on desktop

Let me say this, UA-cam's mobile apps are shit now too. I actually used to like their UI back in the day but now the mobile experience is so bad I stopped using it on my phone altogether. I just reduce the zoom on the web for youtube and make do with it. The phone's UI is designed to make you rely on autoplay and recommendations; which makes using the subscriptions tab very annoying to use.

I'll never abandon computers. My gaming pc is just so useful for me. What I do would NEVER be possible on a phone, without mentioning that I really dislike browsing the web from a phone. It's much better having a regular PC that has the industry standards and making it last for many years if you upgrade it once you are not satisfied anymore. Though, I would never take the merits off phones, without them the access to internet would not have reached almost the entire world, as they are very flexible and come in every price range and it stays on your pocket, unlike a conventional computer.

My thought is that there was a generation that was simply forced to use computers to accomplish anything. But that the number of people that were into computers because they love computers and the things they do (rather than just using them in a utilitarian way) is a pretty static portion of the population.
in other words: the gen z 'nerds' will be just as into computers as millennial and even older nerds were
but all the other personality types decided to use mobile devices as soon as that type of 'appliance' device became viable

I have to move my hands when I want to type, then go back to the mouse when I’m done.
The phone, I just slide away. My keyboard, it’s always right at the bottom of the screen when I click a type field. When the keyboard is gone, my thumbs are in the same position as they were before, and I just slide away. If I do need to scroll with the keyboard up, I raise my thumb 2 inches up and slide from there. I can set a default zoom for the font of most pages, so that the font is not remotely small. No making sure I click on the right spot. Sometimes I click, and I’m off by a pixel, and nothing happens, and that’s annoying. Fast scroll bar is to the right of the text, and I can just drag that, instead of mousing over to it and clicking and holding that click. And I’m not tethered to a desk like a hunched over nerd.
About the only thing the desktop does better is editing text.
I haven’t browsed the internet on a desktop or laptop for years, outside of mods for games. Which makes my desktop a toy. It’s obsolete, and I don’t need it, outside of that sweet sweet frames per second.

Of course not everyone does not need a powerful gaming/workstation level rig, but I guess, at the more basic level, smartphone and tablet already replace low powered PC as they can do a lot nowadays. Well the simple answer is
For business work you go to a PC or laptop.
For casual people, you go to a smartphone that allows you to access just a single screen with no other distractions.
For example i login 8 hours work on my office pc and then get back home and on UA-cam. Any casual thing does not need a complex interface anymore (and a ton of freemium games to prey on whatever leftover time there is , so we can while away the time being as unproductive as possible)

Eh I argue that using phones can also make people distracted easily. It's easy to switch to your social media apps when you have, for example, a zoom meeting in your phone. Of course we can still open social media in our PCs, but most of the time, the experience for the web version isn't that appealing.
So both can be distracting. Desktops for their bigger screens and the ability to see many things at once, and mobiles for their easy to use and more apps geared for consumptions. It depends on who are using it. Btw I can get distracted by both devices, maybe I'm just an easily distracted person 😅

    1) laziness. Sitting on the couch and googling the actor is far more convenient. one doesn't need to stand up, walk to the pc, sit down before searching.
    2) location. For pc usage you are bound to the place it's set up while mobile works during walks, traveling, during gardening etc. Yes laptops are an option to some degree but runtime, weight and size limit it as a device you use all the time
    3) thumbs. Everything which can't be done efficiently using 2 thumbs pretty forces people to use pcs. 3d modeling = pc, writing walls of text/code = pc, precise handlings = pc, clicking/swiping next=mobile, searching 2 words=mobile, GPS stuff=mobile

In a graph of OS market share Android took over Windows as the most popular OS a few years ago. Honestly, I get it since it's the portability factor that pushes people to phones, along with the quick pickup and use feature that phones have since to use a PC you have to start it up and sit down to use it, but for phones they're always on and ready to use whenever you want.

I guess I’m just really old school. When I’m at home I love to plop myself down in front of one of my desktop computers (Linux PC, Windows PC, Mac, Spectrum Next). I never use my phone when I’m in the house. Why would I want to use such a tiny screen with no keyboard (I can type a UA-cam comment 100X faster on a real keyboard). The love of smartphones has baffled me. I only bought my first smartphone very begrudgingly a few years ago since I started to need it just to do basic things outside the house like sports and concert tickets. but when I actually have a choice, (in my house), I’m always sitting at one of my desktop PCs with large multi-screen monitors. Plus I like to have access to actual “files” that I can manipulate in various ways and open ended programmes where you can pass data between with those various files rather than the locked-down “app centric” way that phones tend to work. It’s just not the way I do computing. I don’t just “consume” according to how the manufacturer wants but rather I edit and tinker and need access to raw files and data to do that. Example: what if I want to buy an audiobook, strip out the DRM, remux the file into a different container format, transfer it to my PLEX server, etc? See I don’t just “consume” prepackaged stuff “as is”, but often need to manipulate it and do processing on it in a variety of programmes and utilities. That’s why I use real PCs.

I am a volunteer in migrating medical records to go digital and you would be amazed how many people can barely operate using mouse, keyboard, or trackpad. On the first day of practice they are ALWAYS trying to touch the screen, be it a laptop or desktop. The age doesn't matter either, 90% of them only have exposure to touchscreen. We end up deciding to use a touchscreen laptop or desktop when the institution can afford it. If that's too much for them, we offer two two-week lesson on how to operate a computer.

      Assess needs and goals
      Form an implementation team
      Consider available vendors
      Review facility requirements
      Start planning
      Digitize paper records
      Adjust workflows
      Destroy paper records
      Maintain training
Some challenges of migrating medical records include: Long processes, Preparation, Training, Implementation costs, Lack of user-friendly interface.
One way to convert paper records to electronic records is to scan and file them as digital images in the medical organization's cloud storage. When needed, a secure digital copy can be provided.

Also sometimes I'm playing games on my PC and I want to quickly search something about a quest that I'm struggling with or something similar, I won't alt+tab to my browser even though it is running in the background I will instead pull up my phone and search Google on my phone, again, because it's more convenient slightly so, but still... Bingo! Phones are the most portable & useful of our tech devices so far. Although I'm still waiting for something better to arrive soon.

I've never boutht any thing advertised on a mobile ad. The closest is maybe a UA-cam sponsored video on a type of product I'm actively researching before pulling the trigger. I suppose sponsored spots might get me interested (like the "Delete Me" type services I've been seeing a lot of "this video is brought to you by" spots), but I'm not sure that count.

I'm happy to be in the minority of internet traffic. Gotten to the point of not glued to my phone on the go.I only use my phone to use utility or music apps.

I'm watching this on a tv. Makes we wonder, are tvs considered computers or mobile in this context (given that my tv runs Android) ?

I had the exact same thought lurking in back of mind for ages until this video came out. Agree with this 100%. I turn on the desktop only when i think its uncomfortable to do the task on a mobile phone which is getting exceedingly rare. I watch content on TV, but all other computer tasks that were done on personal laptop and desktop a decade ago, i just need a phone period, they are much more powerful now and fit in the hand.
For those who comment saying they use computer all day, yes even i use a PC for more than 9 hours a day for work, but thats work not "personal use". This video is talking about personal use and its absolutely true that PCs are just not used as much as before. I still need PC for gaming but thats when i find time lol and thats getting harder with work (not even once a month).

Desk top keyboards are so huge and easy to type,
compared to tiny tiny phone pads.
My 1 thumb cover 12 buttons on cell phone,
making it so hard to type quickly on cell phone

Ever since the iPhone's debut, I've always considered it and smartphones in general more a PDA than a phone because that always felt secondary.

The only time i use a cell phone is when outside house,
    or during meal time,
since i cannot carry my desktop with me when outside

How do you count Samsung Galaxy under Dex mode? Mobile? Computer?
