      I agree. He seems to miss the point on some things and gloss over others. If you just look at global market share, then Apple isn’t too big. According to Oberlo, as of November 2023, Apple has a 29.64% market share in the smartphone market worldwide. This means that almost three in 10 smartphone users worldwide use an Apple phone. From what I know, Apple is popular in the USA, but I don’t know what other markets Apple dominates in.
      Google has had different manufacturers make their phones over the years, including LG, HTC, Samsung, Huawei, Motorola, and Foxconn. However, this inconsistency in manufacturers does not necessarily mirror the inconsistency of the quality of Google-branded phones. From my own experience, Google, aside from their camera, didn’t seem to provide a better experience or features compared to something like Samsung.
      When Google Nexus first came onto the scene, people were used to buying phones that were subsidized by carriers. It was a big jump from paying close to nothing compared to the starting price of $529. I think back then, subsidized phones with a plan came to around $50 a month. Today if people go with a big carrier they end up paying the same excluding the cost of a phone.

    Google absolutely does not listen to their user base for what they want... They requested headphone jacks as microSD storage expansion, larger storage on the base models, more storage on high-end models, fingerprint sensors being moved to the back. One thing about Pixel advertising (would also apply to almost the entire android smartphone ecosystem) is that whenever Google gets celebrities to endorse it, it seems forced advertising in a way as vast majority of them use iPhones. Later on I tried out an S22 Ultra and although it was an amazing experience i never managed to get that same spark I did with iPhone. I sold it and kept my 13 Pro Max. Currently using the 15 Pro Max and so far it’s been great. I'm from India and here is my views.
    Normally due to the tropical weather here, battery life is always slightly less than what is projected.
    1. Let's take the point that pixel takes very good photos. Agreed
    2. Now we need a phone that can take atleast 300 photos which means the phone has to survive atleast 3-4 hrs with the camera app. Thats not even possible
    3. At the end of the day I want my phone to stay alive to be able to pick calls. Coz that's what phones are primarily there for
    Now you see my point. Suboptimised processor combined with low battery makes it a phone for those who lives 24/7 in air conditioning environment.

    It's more like people don't know what is possible. No conscious consumer can or will just buy random things like some tech enthusiast, especially if they have been burned before. Phrasing it as not knowing what they want, is kinda weird.
    People know what they want, which is first and foremost, ease of use, then good value (they dont know how much an SOC costs so they just go by something that is expensive), and long term support, and thats what market research shows if you analyse it properly and not just look at what item they buy. It cannot provide data about a possible new thing because it doesn't exist yet.
    It's these things that made iphone popular and the "genius" of Jobs. He simply demonstrated it with a whole event instead of a random ad on whatever most popular media outlet.
    The whole status symbol aspect is a by product of the price. If the phone/Ui was bad, or iphones were cheap, nobody would use it or acquire it as status symbol.
    10:50 erm, it still is. There are many alternatives that are in fact better.

Each successive model gets more and more expensive. The pixel really isn't anything I want at all. I used and mostly enjoyed the first generation pixel despite major issues with the amount of storage available and since then it has just dropped features, gotten more expensive and they also reneged on their promises of free cloud storage (which was their stated reason for limiting the storage options) and even revoked the free storage you got from owning a pixel. VALUE PACKED? WHAT????
    - Pixel costs DOUBLE of what a Samsung or Xiaomi costs and has half the features, half the storage, way less RAM. Where is the value? Because it's not in specs.
    - It has an inferior CPU and an inferior modem. What value?
    - The screen has a lower refresh rate than other brands in same category. So what value?
    - They have no stores.
    - They don't even sell the phone in many many countries outside of US. You can't even order it online in my country; only a few shops decided to import it and sell.
    - Pixel-exclusive "features" are not even available outside US and they are limited to English-only.
    - The fingerprint is god-awful on ALL pixels since they went in-screen fingerprint reader. The reader was great on the back and side, but no, they had to ruin that. Now it's working maybe 10% of the time. I just use pattern/code like everyone else I know do, because you can't rely on fingerprint on these devices.
    - Even GPS and mobile signal is just worse compared to others.
    Pixel is horrible value. All of them. 6a/7a? Get an A53 for example. Much better. 7, 8? Costs way too much.
    The only "value" they have is the long software update time and the stock Android experience.
    That's it. It's not worth double the price while having worse hardware.

    2010 - the Nexus model was Google software meets a chosen manufacturer's hardware whereby Google would squeeze any profit to the point that both would make next to nothing on it. They changed partners every other year (HTC, Samsung, LG). Add a matter of fact I read an article that weighed in on the fact that they were losing money on the product such that the hardware manufacturers would jump ship. Meanwhile iPhone and Samsung became dominant regarding their respective operating systems (iOS vs Android).
    By the time the Pixel brand was established in 2016, the smartphone market was overly saturated (including a whole host of other Asian players Xiaomi, RealMi, ZTE, Huawei, Oppo, OnePlus etc). Don't get it twisted, they sell a really good phone and premium at that, but they'll never catch up - again the market had long ago reached maturity therefore meaningful penetration would be minimally impactful at best.

    IMO Google made the Pixel to show what services Google gives as smartphone features. It explains their reluctance to advertise and make more of a marketing push as opposed to other smartphone competitors, who sell smartphones. Google instead sells a 'marketing' of its features in the package of a smartphone.

People do not compare Budget -> Old High End smart phones, ever, it isn't a consideration. How long do different types of people play with it before purchasing it, 5-10 minutes max? When you can afford it, or think you can replace it easily, why bother? Answering these questions is why customers don't purchase specific products.

    technically, pixels are not even what people usually want. just like many, my reasons for not getting a pixel and going for nothing phone 2 were-
    No fast charging
    samsung node based overheating (hence power hungry) processors (use more power for the same performance compared to tsmc)
    No 120hz screen in lower models (pixel 7 in my case)
    Comparitively BAD cellular connectivity (dealbreaker for me as it hinders daily activity)
    No extra software pop / unique and useful features. (what does one do with a temperature sensor with a very limited range only available on the highest model?)
    best waterproof rating and cameras, and a year of extra security updates were not enough to overcome the compromises
    overall, it was a logical decision to steer away from the pixel. If they had fixed the chips and connectivity, would have surely gone for the pixel.
    Maybe they could make an iphone 15 plus equavalent, a bigger phone with more battery life to have more reviews and customers, as most individuals would take extra battery life and screen size over compactness. Would like your thoughts and opinions as well.

    When I last bought a smartphone (this year) Pixel was one of those that would have looked good if it wasn't for a hard fail on on a main critera for me "3.5mm headset jack".
    (Also, Pixel has - to be kind - downright crappy global availability).
    (And before anyone goes:
    * "use bluetooth", nah, in part I havn't met a pair of bluetooth headphones that sounds good (to be fair, only looked up to about 500$). Also bluetooth headphoens by design will have a short lifespan (battery issues mainly). (yes, I listen a lot to taiko, classical, opera, art rock, and jazz. and I abhor accentuated bass).
    ** Also, bluetooth is _very_ slow when it comes to device switching. When I move from phone -> computer (or vice versa) with cabled this is sub-2s) (also, this multi-use means I also need scary low latency, bluetooth is just too slow)
    * "use a dongle", I refuse to have a mechanical load on my main data/power prt. Up until phones comes with 2+ usb-c ports this isn't an option either).
    But since it is easier to complain than to state what you're looking for. Let me describe what would be my perfect smartphone:
    * Fits in pocket
    * User-replacable battery
    * Separate ports for data/power and audio
    * Micro-sdxc port
    * Water ingress protection
    * Optically stabilised camera
    * Minimal post-processing of photos (AI-processed images is a demerit for me. Fine if they add it in as a option, but let us avoid it)
    * Handles 4G, hadles wifi (802.11a/b/g/n/ac/ax and "be" would be nice as well)
    * USB camera/hid support
    * Plethora of USB-profiles, in particular those pertaining to audio and low-power operation.
    * Physical buttons for Volume, Power.
    * Dedicated buttons for menu/home/back.
    * Not having to spend half a day remove pre-installed bloat.
    RAM and CPU speed basically is "whatever is midrange at the time"

    Really terrible reasoning in this video. Real reason why they don't sell is because they suck. Ever since Tensor, there's severe battery life defects. To be fair Pixels and even Nexuses have had so many various hardware issues that it's unbelievable. Some choices Google made like with Pixel 4s battery were really so moronic that you can't top that. Plain Android isn't exactly a selling point, mostly because Google just kinda shit out updates, but not necessarily quality updates and Google's Android lacks a lot of features and in last 5 years became really bloated, to the point where you get Samsung level bloat and way worse functionality. The last decent Pixel was Galaxy Nexus, it just didn't have any hardware issues, was actually made well and unlike today weren't loaded with cringe features.

    Pixels are great but sometimes have bad glitches like the Pixel 6 series. Some of these glitches would make picking up phone calls impossible and that really puts a bad taste in your mouth. Some of them have been fixed for the pixel 7pro but not all and the pixel 6A still has the worst ones of them all. Since my Samsung account isn't working anymore and I am in the US, I may as well get an iPhone. Customization on the pixel is severely nerfed compared to the budget Samsung I used to own, and if you compare my Pixel 7pro to a Samsung in its price range it looks sad. I hope they have fixed their glitchy track record with the 7-year pixel 8 series because some of the general public might buy one thinking that it will last through the 7 years and if it doesn't then Google is going to alienate their existing user base and lose all customers of their phones. Pixels have potential I just hope Google fixes the glitches soon otherwise I'd never recommend one to anyone.

Their appeal in big markets such as India and China is simply being a premium product from a reputable company, but then Apple, Samsung, Xiaomi and Oppo/Vivo/Oneplus/Realme gives a more premium option with better specs often at the same, or in the case of Xiaomi and Oppo/Vivo/Oneplus/Realme, with better prices.

    The problem with the pixel is that it's not exceptional in any category but the camera (and even there it's debatable due to the quality being from post-processing). The pixel is a great phone but the average person has barely heard of it, nobody looks for the #2 way to lose weight.
    It's not a uniquely Google problem, brands like Nokia also flopped due to not having a flagship to make the lineup desireable.
    Your point on "aspirational" is correct, but it's not because customers don't know what they want. Rather it's because the priority is to be closest to what they perceive to be "the best" even if wrong. That's why customers would rather buy the mid-ranged version of a samsung or apple than a much better pixel or a xiaomi.
    But the bigger hurdle is whether or not they've even heard of xiaomi or pixel before. Most consumers aren't into phones the way we are and only have a vague idea of what brands exist on the market.

      I'm from the USA, Xiaomi doesn't seem to be available at the local stores or cell phone service providers. Unless you are a tech enthusiast then you know where to search and find them. As for smartphone tech, it has gotten so good most people don't need or want to pay for the top tier smartphone. I am not sure if problems in the past have plagued Pixel/Google phones in the past. Over the years Google had many issues with their smartphones from the past: overheating, bluetooth problems, camera issues, software bugs,screen coloration, ect. Google has had different manufacturers make their phones over the years, including LG, HTC, Samsung, Huawei, Motorola, and Foxconn. However, this inconsistency in manufacturers mirrors the inconsistency of the quality of Google-branded phones. From my own experience, Google, aside from their camera, didn’t seem to provide a better experience or features compared to something like Samsung.
