Franken Opposes Betsy DeVos Nomination - Full Senate Floor Speech

  • Sen. Al Franken (D-MN) joins other Democratic Senators in an all-night marathon of speeches opposing Donald Trump's nominee for Secretary of Education, Betsy DeVos.
Some quotes from Franken's remarks as prepared for delivery:
"Mrs. DeVos has no formal background in education, no classroom experience, and no demonstrated commitment to supporting public education whatsoever.
"In fact, Mrs. DeVos has a long history of actively undermining public education. She and her family have spent millions of dollars advocating for an ideology that would steal funds from public schools in order to fund private and religious education."
"But I’d like to close by asking a few questions of my colleagues who are still considering a vote in her favor.
"If Mrs. DeVos’s performance didn’t convince you that she lacks the qualifications for this job, what would have had to happen in that hearing in order to convince you?
"If you cannot bring yourself to vote against this nominee, is there anyone President Trump could nominate for any position who you could vote against?
"And if we cannot set party loyalty aside long enough to perform the essential duty of vetting the President’s nominees, what are we even doing here?
"Mr. President: The Constitution gives us that power to reject cabinet nominations specifically so that we can prevent fundamentally ill-equipped nominees like Betsy DeVos from assuming positions of power for which they are not qualified.
    "Let’s do our job."

People were tired of the SJW, PC, liberal, horseshit that they were fed on a daily basis. You have to understand that a lot of the supporters of Trump were once Obama supporters. They felt ripped off by Obama. Trump took the stance as being against everything vile the left has become and a lot of people bought it, especially given how just batshit crazy some leftists have become. You can find how ridiculous their protests are on youtube. The best solution now would be to condemn all the left wing radicalists before Trump and this bitch Devos can be addressed.

This is what you get for voting for people like Bush, Obama, Hillary and now Trump...even though Trump lied during the campaign with his "drain the swamp" bullshit.

The president has some (bad) ideas about education. So he wanted to find a nominee that share his beliefs.
    So far, it makes sense.
But ask yourself this question, when then one person you can find that share your opinion is someone without any actual knowledge of how it works and hasn't even been willing to educate herself to prepare for the interviews, this also says a lot either about how corrupt the nomination his or how universally rejected his vision his.
Because seriously, there are at the very least, tens of thousands of persons more qualified than her in the US.

Well, Mr. Comedian who had no lawmaking experience and clearly still has not read and/or understood our Constitution, your job is not to even be involved with education. Our constitution specifically enumerates the powers of the government and running a Department of Education is not among the powers enumerated. You should be working to close the entire department and return the control of education back to the states.

For those that think Harvard creates Godlike creatures...A trio from the Harvard College Debating Union squared off against three men from the Bard Prison Initiative at a maximum security prison in Napanoch, NY. After an hour of debating, the inmates were declared the victors. “The prison initiative reached out to us to set up a debate, and we agreed. We wanted to be of any help we could be,” Dhruva Bhat, President of the Harvard College Debating Union told Boston.com. “The debating team thinks debating is a powerful tool, and we want to work with other organizations to try to get public debating in more public schools. Debating has changed our lives and this confirmed how powerful a tool education and debating can be.”In one round, the three convicts had to promote the argument that “Public schools in the United States should have the ability to deny enrollment to undocumented students,” despite disagreeing with it. According to the The Wall Street Journal , the three prisoners raised points the Harvard team didn’t counter. Despite not having access to the Internet for debate preparation and research, the prison team has previously faced and defeated debaters from West Point Military Academy and University of Vermont, according to the Wall Street Journal. “Not having access to the Internet definitely made it a lot harder for them,” Bhat said. “Clearly Bard has given them a very solid foundation.”But did the Harvard team go easy on them?“We definitely did not,” Bhat said. “That would have been incredibly disrespectful of their talent and work.”This isn’t the first time the prestigious New England college has lost a debate to prisoners. A Norfolk Prison Colony team formed in the 1930’s defeated Harvard, Yale, Princeton, and even Oxford, in various debates. Famous Harvard alumni

Representatives from the Harvard team did not respond to repeated requests for comment from The Washington Post. What makes the victory over Harvard impressive is less about who pulled it off than how they did it.To prepare for the competition, the inmates, members of Bard’s Prison Initiative, were forced to acquire knowledge the old-fashioned way: Without access to the Internet, according to the Wall Street Journal. In 2015, can you seriously imagine preparing for anything - purchasing a movie ticket, looking up directions or researching basically anything - without going online. So a degree while note worthy is nice, it is not a sure sign of being right in everything..

Thank you for your support Sen Franken and other governmental officials that are in support of public education. As a teacher, we are used to getting defeated and demoralized at every turn. Novices at the public level always think that schools are broken and privatization alone can fix it. Bring on more unfunded mandates from the federal government and a depletion of monies directed to those that need it the most.

I wonder if anyone has ever told these schools about that law ? A friend of mine ended up moving 300 miles to the city because she could no longer afford car insurance to get her kids to school and was threatened with truancy charges.

look, if you were really rich and the only thing that gives you purpose in life is to evade taxes then yes public education is the enemy. The last tax in which multi million dollar home owners have to pay is proberty tax and public education is a major portion. "they" don't attend or know and one that does attend public education except for maybe there maids. The only connection is the burden of paying for a government entitlement that they wouldn't even drive in the neighborhood of.

Congratulations to US institutions for this great great lesson of democraty. All the president's nominees are hearing by the senate before joining the governement, which does not happen in France. I'm impressioned when I see these state secretaries, all members of the most powerful persons in the world, listen to the questions very carefully, obliged to answer and likely to be interrupted at every moment.
The speech of senator Franken is brilliant. It comes out that the actual president is the last president of US. I'm not sure at all...

My thought on that important issue is if you wanna send your child to a private school if you want to send your child to religious school you have at it. you pay for 100% you do not get government money to do that. the federal government pays for public schools and public schools only. If that were the case we would not be cutting all the programs they give us well rounded children. There is no excuse to divert this money over to schools that do not need it, to adults that don’t need the help. It’s easy public funds go to public schools not private or religious schools
