  • The monkey tail cactus is probably my favourite. It has a cascading shape which is long and furry and sort of looks like a monkey tail. Requires very little fuss and looks sensational. Cheers, Gloria.
    A bit about the monkey tail care.
    1.It needs a bright position with indirect light.
    2.Use a well-draining cactus mix
    3.Water when the soil is fully dry in the growing season. Over-watering will cause root rot.
    4.Fertilize sparingly, high-potassium, low nitrogen. Honestly just once a year during the growth period will do or if you want to, monthly with half strength.
    5.There’s no need to trim this cactus but removing the dead flowers can encourage more flowers.
    6.The monkey tail has shallow roots and it doesn’t mind being pot bound but if you want it to grow you’ll have to repot it, after the growing season. And use fresh potting mix and fertilize it.
    7.If it gets any bugs just treat it the same way you would any other plant.

    Hi, I loved researching this cacti. I am new to plants and i stumbled across the monkey tail. My local nurseries don't stock it. Where did you get it for $12 ?? Thankyou - love your videos

      Hi Jane, I am in Melbourne and my favourite nursery is Garden World in Springvale. It is huge and as it happens, they specialize in cacti. If you are in America, I would imagine it would be easier to find the monkey tail than here. Keep looking, I hope you find some, they are wonderful. Cheers, Gloria.

      HiGlori, I'm in regional vic -Latrobe Valley. I've searched all my local nurseries and couldn' find monkey tail. I did locate one ata florist and i've purchased it but im not certain it is monkey tail or a similar plant. It has about 12/13 arms coming off it but their is no hair, just cactus prickles. Cost me $50 and i guess i will have to wait and see. Thanks

      Hi Jane, Well yours sounds pretty impressive even if it isn't a monkey tail. If I find out that any Latrobe Valley nurseries have them, I'll let you know. I have a friend in Rosedale who is a keen gardener, so I'll get her to keep a look out. I'm doing a video on my snake plant next. Cheers, Gloria.

      Thanks Glori, I am in Traralgon - 10 mins from Rosedale. I went back to Tiffanies today and found that she had a monkey tail, it was $70... she said the one i bought a few days ago was a peanut something.. it is impressive. With these cacti, do you water from the top or sit them in a dish of water?

      Hi Jane, I've checked out the peanut cactus and it's gorgeous. You should get flowers next spring. I'm no expert but since it is a cactus, water wise I'd say do not water during winter and only water other times when the soil dries out. So it won't be very often and not too much. Cacti die when overwatered so no sitting in a dish of water, it will drown. Believe me I know all too well. It is so hard not to water them but they are used to living in desert conditions where they thrive. So glad you found such a lovely plant. Gloria. 🌵

    Why does my monkey tail grow a new one midway down to end instead of from the base?

    • @glorij
      @glorij  Місяць тому

      Are you sure it's a baby? They grow from the base because they sprout roots in the soil. Could it be a callous. It certainly is very odd. But odd is okay anyway. 😊

    How do you get it to bloom?

    • @glorij
      @glorij  4 місяці тому +1

      Hi Beverly, apparently they are more likely to bloom if they are outdoors in a warm climate, but indoors you might get lucky if your monkey tail gets morning sun. My sister has had blooms but I’m still waiting 😏

      @@glorij I live in FL. Mine stays outside all year round. Do they need a specific fertilizer?

    • @glorij
      @glorij  4 місяці тому +1

      Hi Beverly, sorry for the delay, I've just been away on holiday. I asked my friend at the Cactus Association, and he feels that yes, some fertilizer might help. For you the blooming season is now so you should be getting flowers. If you fertilize it should be done now, just an all-rounder, nothing special, and also half strength. I hope that helps, good luck. Cheers, Gloria.
