    ♥ 10 Things To Know About Air-Dry Clay! ♥ • 10 Things You Must Kno...
    Hi all! This is a video that I've been planning to do for so long, and it's taken such a long time to put together. I debated which brands to try out and decided to go with the most common ones sold in Europe, Asia and the USA. Of course, there are many other DIY paper clay brands out there, and you can use this video as a guide to test them out for yourself. As mentioned, a good clay should have a soft & silky consistency, hold its shape well, easily texturable with a sharp tool and mixes smoothly with acrylic paint.

    This video has left me pretty stunned. I've been working with Fimo air light (and Efaplast light for as long as it was available) and I've gotten pretty decent results with both. I'm making small, realistic pet portrait and fantasy figurines and I actually love working with those clays, but now I really want to try the better ones and see how the work flow compares.

    If anyone in England doesn't know where to get some of these clays, if you go into hobby craft, you can find Fimo clay ( around £5-£6) and you can find some of the crayola magic clay in the children craft area. Hope this helps anyone!

      You guys need to stop underestimating the community. I think other people *do know* the difference between the clays. Especially when the clay is labelled as "Fimo Air dry clay" 😅 there could be various reasons why the fimo air dry clay didn't work for her, but for him and others. It could've been a bad batch. Who knows.

    Two things with Model Magic:
    1) The smell is possibly due to the plastic bag. It tends to pick up smells very easily, however the odor will go away is moved to an air tight container instead of keeping it in the bag.
    2) It will dry faster if you have a dryer room. My office is much dryer than most other places in my home and that is where I put my model magic pieces to dry.
    However the long drying time is a bit of a dream for some cosplayers. With its long drying time is it pliable during crucial parts of costume making, allowing itself to be bent if anything should shift, or needs to be reformed (like armor) it will reform with it.

    In my opinion I absolutely love Crayola's model magic. I used it to make my Karkat horns. It's super light weight. It's aimed for children but honestly it's amazing!! Although this is only my experience from a rather small not so detailed project. But I was in a bit of a con crunch and it was still slightly squishy when I wore it, but it still held up!!

    For those of you who can't afford to buy online, if you ever get around or live near a Daiso, you should check out the clay there! They have colors that are pre-colored, so there's not only white. Also, it's extremely affordable. It only retails for $1.50-2.80 depending on where you live. I once got a chance to LA and checked out the clay they have there, and it was great! Highly recommend you too check it out!

      When I went to Daiso in California for a trip, I tried out their paper clay, and it was a bit of a disappointment. It was very crumbly and dry, and it always cracked when I tried to sculpt with it. I tried it one year, then the next year tried again. Same results. It is okay for making sweet deco cream, but not very good at all for other things. That is why it is so cheap. Then again, this could just be my experience.

    • @elianeslife921
      @elianeslife921 7 років тому +1

      +Jayori It definitely seems that way! I always bought my clays there and I had no problems with it. Probably the clay that was quite old so your store might not restock so often that's why your clay might be crumbly. Maybe use a bit of water to soften it? I'm not sure but I never had a problem with Daiso clay.

    This was so helpful! And I tried to sculpt with Fimo, thinking it would be one of the better ones since it's such a popular brand, but I couldn't make it work at all. I felt like my skills died from when I was still in school and felt terrible about it.
    I will definitely get some hearty and sculpt with fresh confidence ^^ Thank you!!

    Everybody, let's thank Joanna for doing all of this for us! You didn't get the credit you deserve, but right now, I want to give you this credit because I love you. You do so much of this and we use these. Whoever hates on her, why are you here!? She posts these because she loves doing this and wants to help us. Her channels are for the people who thanks her for all the hard work she's done for us while doing this. Now, I wrote this comment because I want to give her the thanks and love she deserves. I hope all of you will too by agreeing by replying to me, liking this comment, subscribing to her, and like her videos. Remember, I'm doing this for her, and not me.

    • @maqaroon
      @maqaroon  7 років тому +21

      HI! Yes, Fimo polymer clay (over bake) and Fimo air-dry clay are very different things. The polymer clay (small coloured blocks) is quite popular with the UA-cam crafting community and you can get good results with it. Fimo air dry clay only comes in white and is terrible, as shown in this video

    I know this video is really old but Joanna I just wanted to extend my thanks to you. I'm new at making cosplay props and decided to use air dry clay to fill in some tapering gaps in a staff that I need to be able to sand and cannot heat up. When looking at all the brands in the store I remembered watching this video forever ago and used it as a reference for picking the right clay. I know that what I'm doing isn't what you made this video for but it was really helpful nonetheless! Thank you!
