Battleship Mountain Solo Overnight Backpacking - TERRIFYING

- Join me on an EPIC solo overnight backpacking trip to Battleship Mountain, in the Superstition Wilderness of Arizona. The 13 mile round trip hike begins at the First Water Trail Head parking lot, and ends on top of one of the most challenging boulder scrambles in the Superstitions - BATTLESHIP MOUNTAIN. The most terrifying hike I've been on is complete with 10-15 ft high rock wall climbs and a boulder ridge scramble that is sure to get your heart pumping as you balance on the bright yellow, moss covered boulders with 100+ ft cliffs on both sides.
Nice! I got cliffed out several times on this one, broke a foothold off route and took a small fall thanks to a cactus holding my weight. As a climber its not technically difficult but mentally stressful when I kept getting off route!
Oh yeah man, it’s not easy find the route or stay on it. Might need to update this video with some tips on how to stay on track…
I like the peace and quiet 👍
Me too! The farther you go, the quieter it gets. 🤫
@@MoonJuiceHikes 👍
Nice to see the Garden Valley green and not ravaged by the wildfires.
I just did this hike a couple weeks ago. Great fun. Also had some MoonJuice with me
A little reward for the effort is warranted!
My heart was pounding so fast watching you!
Lol! It gets your blood pumping, that’s for sure!
God bless you. Every video I have seen is how to manage getting to the top of Battleship Mountain, but I really wanted to know how to not get lost (I am good at that) on the way there. This video was so helpful with the maps.
Awesome! Glad it was helpful. Hope you enjoyed the hike!
Thanks for sharing the trip, enjoyed the hike with you bro.
Glad you enjoyed it! I don’t have a lot of equipment, but I try to show what it feels like to be on the trail. For better or worse!
@@MoonJuiceHikes, That's actually what I liked about your video you kept it simple, with good views, and it was informative. It's best to pack light for sure.
Guts!!! At My Age I Can't Do This Kind Of Hike But You Certainly Have Guts, Surprised By The Number Of People On The Hike!!!!
Was hard to watch some that! I have done a lot of stuff over the years, but I would never do that!
Just wow
Wow! Really kool haha - I'll have to see if you review your gear
Hi Brevan, new sub here. I've recently finished your AZT videos and loved every one of them. I did the AZT last spring and loved the area so much I'm flying back to the U.S. in March to do The Grand Enchantment Trail. As I've got quite a bit of time before I can enter Aravaipa Canyon I was looking for things to do/see off trail and this fits the bill perfectly, it looks amazing. Thank you for sharing and good luck for the future.
Awesome Alan! I've run into other thru hikers that have done the Grand Enchantment trail, and loved it. Its not used much, so prepare to bushwhack! I like to do trail magic from time to time in the spring for the AZT NOBO's, I might see you out there.
awesome cache find..
So as a Scottish guy I've recently started taking an interest in American national parks .... thanks to Mr David Paulides an his missing 411 series which for me is utterly fascinating.... and terrifying..... through that i found out about the Superstition Mountains and have watched a few documentaries regarding that area ..... Man you have some extra huge testiculars on you sir .... huge Kudos to you for spending a night alone there and thank you very much for taking us with you ..... i would Love to see more of this region..... once again thanks for your time and effort ...., many regards from a Scottish Brother 🙏👊❤️
These videos make good scouting videos
Beautiful shots
cool stuff
Um I am just going to go out on a limb here and say doesn't the matted down part of the trail kind of give it away that you are on the trail? .....what would you need the CARIN's for.......and to comment on your journey from your tent to the summit.....HELL NO.....maybe when we were in high school, but defiantly not now, I will have to live that one through you brother, tanks for another great Moonjucie adventure.
Once got into a very scary situation climbing borders, by myself, high in the Sierra Nevada Mts. Wasn't sure for a bit whether I was going to get out alive. Your video reminded me of that. Thought you did a excellent job of filming there.
Thanks Dave! The danger doesn’t always translate well on the GoPro, but it’s pretty clear here.
Crazy hike! I would join you on that one but will have to wait until they invent lawn chair drones. I want to go hike out and camp in Boulder Canyon. Is the season already over?
I’m down for a lawn chair drone ride! The heat is definitely on the way, but you can definitely hit Boulder canyon this weekend. Plenty of water.
Nice Drone shot! Unless you had the longest stick in existence!
That’s what she said
When corey daniels said he never ever goes alone, I believe he knows exactly why he feels the way he does....
Too dangerous? Truth be told, the wide angle on the GoPro makes this looks worse than it really is (not that it’s not pretty nerve racking).
where did you camp? Up on top before you start the scramble on rocks? love your videos. cheers
Thanks! Yep, you can’t miss it when you are up there. There’s room for a couple of tents for sure.
How is the exposure on the climbing sections? The one shot of you climbing up and down a section didnt look to be near any cliffs. Obviously there were some huge cliffs in the hiking and boulder-hopping parts. If the climbing sections are only 10-20 foot exposures id feel more comfortable soloing this
I think there are 3 short walls you need to scramble up, but if you’re comfortable with class 4 and low level class 5 terrain, it’s not a problem. They’re only 10-15 ft tall. Most of the challenge is figuring out the route, it’s not always so obvious. Best to give yourself plenty of extra time. Really cool hike!
I suggest u get a chest mount or headband mount for your GoPro.
Nice. Was that your done footage?
I borrowed that footage from an older video I found. Thought it would help put things in perspective to see the shape of that strange mountain from the side… fun hike!
@@MoonJuiceHikes Oh yeah, for sure!
@@MoonJuiceHikes good to know its not yours as drones are not allowed in the wilderness.
@@colinjveitchI came here to say the same. Glad others are looking out for the wilderness areas as well.
No way Jose!
NFW!
Looks like fun! What camera do you use?
It is fun, one my favs in the Supes. That camera was the GoPro8, now I'm using the GoProHero11 (which is greatly improved)
I don’t think I could climb that one. Just watching I felt a bit queazy.
My heart pounds much worse watching some of this, than it did in person. I think the GoPro wide angle lens makes it looks worse on video than it was in person. It was definitely scary in person, but it looks absolutely terrifying at times on video.
I’m gonna be heading out there in a week and a half trying to find a loop that has a possibility of water. Was there any water at second water spring do you know in that area?
You know, there were a couple small stagnant pools. But, it had rained the weekend before. At this point, I wouldn’t expect to see water there. However, there is usually water in LaBarge canyon. If not, 100% certain there is filterable water at Charlebois spring. Anywhere else in the western superstitions, I wouldn't expect to find water right now.
Unuh not for me
Rugged, but beautiful country.
Ever have anything spooky happen at nite while camping there?
Is there an all trails to this hike?
Yes, Battleship Mountain is a popular trail.
@@MoonJuiceHikes let me clarify with. What is it? As in the all trails
@ Battleship Mountain Scramble
@@MoonJuiceHikesheaded out there tomorrow!
Wondering your thoughts on how much water to bring. Seems like you can get lucky and find some but not worth banking on it.
Let me know!
@ I missed this, was camping out under Weavers Needle. You’re already done, so no sense in offering useless advice! 😂
Watch out for tarantula and scorpions
Also watch out for red ants
I Would Never do that by myself!
Definitely adds a little extra excitement to the adventure!
Watch out for rattle snakes use snake gaiters
Wow it is terrifying! What camera are you using?
It’s a GoPro Hero 8. Truth be told, the wide angle lens makes it look worse than it was. I mean, it’s definitely scary, but I felt pretty safe.
Dude! You going wood for a fire up there ?
Ha! Yeah man, I toted up a Duraflame. Since I was already loaded down with a cooler of MoonJuice, what's a few more lbs?
