Man! Funny enough we got it out today. There’s another video not long after this one where I found even better tires. Yes this thing is still incredible, thanks!!
Awesome upgrades! I subscribed because I want to get a HB 2995 and be able to repair / upgrade as needed. You actually show a lot about the process to help this newbie girl out and I appreciate that!
I believe I have the links in the description of that video. Have you checked there? Also in my latest video on that car from about two weeks ago, I have more upgrades and all the links in that description for sure. That way you get the same stuff! 👍 If you order all that stuff from my links, Amazon and Banggood give me a small commission so that’s always appreciated!
I installed Castle Creations SCT. I removed material from between esc and battery. Moved esc on top of servo and put in a CHNL 3s 2200 battery. She hauls now 😂
Still running stock tires. I have the 5in. Wheels but think it might be to much as the motor does get warm. Afraid if I put bigger tires on it motor will get hot. I will go down to 2s for bigger tires and should be good. I might use bigger tires and turn down throttle limit. I will keep you posted. I have some chunky 4in. I want to try first. Won't the big 5" tires be hard on the front diff?
@ingodwetrust2024 cool! Yes they’ll be harder on the diff, but the center differential really helps keep them protected. All the crap I’ve put mine through and no diff issues yet! Absolutely amazing what these can handle.
WOW, now that was some EPIC bashing at the highest level!! You gotta try the stock wheels in front and BIG wheels in the back like a HOT ROD type of look? Most of all, I wonder how it would JUMP and control or drift maybe even try some flat drift ties. Hey, just typing on the fly brotha. *BASH ON!!!
I picked up one of these used. Ordered a cheap surpass 3300kv motor and 60a esc combo. 17t pinion and new receiver and transmitter. All for about $100. First attempt at doing something like this, hope it works out.

Just ordered the 2995 along with some extra batteries and the HBX metal shocks. Not sure how they compare to the ones you upgraded to but hopefully they are good. Motor and ESC will have to come later.
@@DerbyCityRC In a pleasant surprise, the 2995 I got came with oil filled shocks...so one less thing to upgrade right now. Don't know what weight oil is in there, feels like it could be a tad heavier as it still bounces a little but it's better than friction shocks alone. May do that heavier oil in the center diff at some point but need to better learn the pros/cons of doing that.
Thanks!! Haha! Yes the repairs certainly keep me busy! It’s the thrill of landing lots of big flippy-doos without breaking that makes up for the bad landings that do cause the breakage. Or maybe I’m just making excuses 🤣🤣
@@DerbyCityRC “flippy Doos” 😂 I like it! I hate it when I break shit! When my kids were in this with me , I used to spend more time fixing their stuff than driving😝!You handle it well bro!🤙🏽👊🏼💯
I will be coining many amazing phrases in future videos 😇. Thanks! I break more than Max for now. Still gotta work on his air controls cuz he’s starting to get better at hitting the ramp at faster speeds🤣
@@DerbyCityRC hi, where can I find this tires and can you send me similar ones for 901A? I want to drive it on grass how much would this type of tired help vs the stock ones?
Here are the tires. These would work on the 901a also, but you may need wheel spacers for that car because the control arms are not as long. These pushed the 2995 through the grass no problem! www.banggood.com/custlink/vGmRnHIuD2
Man i cant wait to continue seeing videos on this one. One thing that i would like to see , is more of a breakdown of the parts you are using and installation. My brother and I just bought this one and we would really like to to start cranking things up with it. Thanks for the videos!
Glad you liked it! I’ll see if I can do a more detailed video when I do the chassis replacement. All these brand new parts will need to come off anyway lol hopefully that would be helpful to you! Thanks for watching and commenting!! 😃
I'm running mine with a $20 Gool RC 3500kv motor. On 2s it was okay, a moderate amount of cogging at low speed. 1st run 3s was great, but the motor got really hot and started making a strange noise. I ordered a fan for it to hopefully keep the temps in check.
Ya some of those cheaper motors do pretty well. I have a $40 motor/esc combo in my Flyhal fc610 (same chassis). It does pretty well but I haven’t tried 3s yet. The Hobbywing is amazing!
This vehicle is on my wish list! Just curious if you'd be interested in a video idea; helping noobs decide what upgrades to get first and how to make wise decisions on what will fit your rc properly. Or if you already have that video, or another good resource for those just dipping their toes in, I'd appreciate the guidance. Thanks for your excellent work!
It’s a great truck for sure! Absolutely one of my favorite budget cars to upgrade. So I’m actually working on a full noob video, but for now, this one may help you. It’s an older video so has a different pace but hopefully gives you an idea for now. Thanks! ua-cam.com/video/bT0lcHs_mdY/v-deo.html
Nice! Use this motor combo: amzn.to/41mSXpe The Hobbywing has been out of stock for a while and I’ve heard this one works perfectly roo. But the esc is slightly bigger so you have to mount it ontop somewhere instead of where the original one is.
Hey Evan, Don‘t even know how many times i‘ve watched this video now. Many times.. Always checking again and again what motor combo you used. So you used the the 3300kv hobbywing combo, and i think you say a 4000kv would have been ok to use too. I wanna get something for my 2996a. Tell me what to buy. I‘ll listen… Cheers, Henrik
There is not adjustability for it without drilling your own holes in the motor mount. Some people have done it but I haven’t. I have a 16t pinion in mine and it allows you to go to a 14t, so not really a big help if you want more speed lol
Hi dude, just watching this video again, I'm in the process f upgrading my Bezgard HM101 (same chassis) to brushless, I've got a 32 DP pinion, by any chance do you know if it will match the spur gear on this platform? or, will a need a MOD 0.6 pinnion instead? I appreciate any help you can provide.
The torque is amazing. I have another video on this with even better tires. If I remember right, I got 37 mph on 2s. Still need to get another video going on it with that info. Definitely a good choice! Thanks for watching!
Well I am actually about to do a budget friendly brushless conversion on my Flyhal fc610, which is essentially the exact same car. So I would wait for that video just because it’s a motor set I’ve never tried out but I have a good feeling about it. I have one video coming out in the next day or two, then I believe that conversion will be next.
This one here. It’s spec’d the same but the esc is even more amperage. It’s also slightly bigger though so it doesn’t tuck in to the same place. Gotta mount ontop of the servo or the upper brace. Also first time I’ve ever seen this set on sale. amzn.to/4aMzPpi
@StraightModderps3 hard to say. The combo I used was discontinued I believe. The spectrum unit should be just as good if not better being it’s a higher amp esc. I just know that esc won’t fit in the tight spot of the original so you have to mount it elsewhere.
I ordered new shocks and they were missing the bearing in the eye spring of the new shock. Looks like yours came the same what did you do for the missing bearing?
Mine didn’t seem to be missing anything. The top comes with a ball stud that I use and the bottom just comes with little little brass bushings. On certain cars, it seems to fit better without the bushings, but I believe I used those and the screws the new shocks came with on this car.
@@DerbyCityRC awesome thanks man. I know the go to these days is brushless motors but how reliable would you say this setup is running on 3s? I just got this and ran through a few 3s batteries so far and it rips for a brushed motor for sure. Is this a Setup that I can run for a while without issue ? I was thinking to add a fan to the motor to help with temps but it only gets a little warm really
i did same upgrade you listed for the Flyhal FC610 truck this setup cogs bad needs a push start to roll. the program card i have for hobby wing does not seem to set correctly. can you please help me resolve this issue.
Yes I guess I forgot to update it in this video. I’ll fix that. This is a comparable motor with an even higher voltage esc. Only difference is the esc doesn’t fit down where the stock one does like the Hobbywing so you have to get a bit more creative with placement. amzn.to/3PDHHBg
Hey man, this is the first RC car my GF and I got and we love it. Point is we do not know ANYTHING when it comes to upgrades, and honostly what you did looked to worksome. Would you reccomend is fine just the tire and shock upgrades? are there batteries that we can get that would simply last longer?
I believe the tires and shocks would be good, but it’s amazing with the motor upgrade! I believe this is the battery I used, but it depends on the connector your car has. This won’t fit the stock connector. amzn.to/3WJHk8k
Video Request: for Newbies like my wife and I...can you do a tutorial type video that shows how to do flips, etc. I'm sure we can get their on our own after repeated breakage but some tips would be awesome.
where do you get spare parts for the 2995? I just broke an upper control arm and only found one place to order from online. the site seems kinda shady and haven't heard back in over a week.
Those tires were much better. You couldn’t control it at all in the air with the original ones. Of course the motor was what really brought it alive. I have even bigger jumps in my Kraton videos. We have a blast! Lol
@DerbyCityRC: Just discovered your channel and really enjoying what you do. Question - the motor linked to upgrade this is currently unavailable. Would the motor taken from the 'Rlaarlo / Croboll' car you reviewed a while back be a good substitute or is there a better option you'd recommend?
Thanks! I know it’s been out for a while! I would go with this kit: Same price, same motor specs. The esc is bigger physically though so it does not fit in the alotted space. You need to get creative and mount it ontop of the servo or upper chassis brace. amzn.to/3vchq4T
It cannot (as far as I know). But a higher end controller with a new receiver would be better anyway (would also need a new esc though. What are you trying to get out of it?
It's kinda slow, so I just bought a cheap brushless motor and esc to play around with it, learn how it works. Didn't realize I needed a new receiver and transmitter as well. I watched your flyhall upgrade video after I posted on this video and went with that transmitter combo.
I’m a rookie in this hobby and I have the 2995. I bought a new motor that has a 5mm shaft, which is thicker than the original shaft. Which pinion gear do I need to buy?
If you can find it, the pinion I recommend on this video, which should be in the description, will still fit. It has a 5mm hole but comes with a sleeve to insert in the bore of you have a 3.175 mm shaft. Problem is, it’s been out of stock quite often lately.
@@DerbyCityRC I finally ended up finding a 5mm .6 mod pinion gear with 17t. (Couldn’t find anything lower than 17t). I used a speedometer app and attached my phone to the truck to find the top speed which ended up being 37.2mph. And WOW is all I can say. Well, that and “watch y’all’s ankles” 🤣🤣 adjusting driving at this speed has been interesting.
No I couldn’t even find it on Hobbywings website last time I looked. Here is a motor that should be comparable. Same size and kv Plus another well known brand. amzn.to/3I3tOIr
Finally got one 😁, just not sure how i want to do the brushless conversion. I have a wp 10bl60 id like to use, but space is tight, it looks like the max10 is about the same size, but smaller fan. I was thinking of mounting the esc on the center brace, and using the empty space to make a larger battery tray, cutting out the end of the stock tray, and somehow using epoxy make the tray longer, but theres really nothing to attach to near the steering assembly, and im not sure if it will be strong enough for the battery strap.
So unfortunately they have been out of stock on that exact motor combo for a while. This one here should be pretty comparable and is the same price: amzn.to/3IRPpEy Pinion gear: amzn.to/3CPZ4ra Controller/receiver: amzn.to/3Wj3FsS Tires I recommend (not the ones in this video): amzn.to/3w4mEN9 Video with those tires: ua-cam.com/video/GvNNjAeEn10/v-deo.html
That stinks, but you’re right I just checked! Here is a 4000kv, which should work just fine. I have it in another 1/12 car and it works well. Goes even faster than the 3300kv. I haven’t tried it in this car so I can’t be 100% sure. But I believe it will be fine, especially since it’s really made for a 1/10 scale car. amzn.to/3A0bZG2
How much did all the upgrades cost? Now you have me thinking I should return my Deerc 9201e on order for this one. Or should I just go for the 901a 🤔🤔🤔
These upgrades plus the truck itself all cost a little over $300, I also did a budget version of this, which is my latest video if you haven’t seen it yet. It’s green and it was all done for under $225. With the upgrades, I think it is a better option than the 9201e, but can’t go wrong with that one either, really or keep them both!! Lol
Do you mean the 901a? I actually a video dedicated to campaign the 901a and the 2995. The 2995 is the same as the bezgar hb101 as far as I can tell, also the same as the Flyhal FC610. I have links in most of my vids to the products I use and sometimes I have coupon codes I have found, so be sure to use those!!!
Yup I hear ya! Check out my two latest videos, the brushless conversion of the Flyhal fc610 and the comparison of the 901a and the 2995. I think that will tell you what you want to know 😃
To make the brushless conversion, besides the pinion you also changed the receiver and controller? Is that necessary for the conversion? What motor did you use? I’m still looking for my first RC and this combo looks amazing
Yes dude this combo is amazing. Absolutely love this car and the parts I put on it. Yes you do need to replace the controller. Here are parts and links I used👍 amzn.to/3sxaL0c amzn.to/3gGObfY amzn.to/3sz7mho www.banggood.com/custlink/mKvdbC5GSw
@@DerbyCityRC Hey man I just bought the car thanks to your recommendation. What kind of 3s battery would you recommend me buying for it? I plan or running it stock on 3s for a while and later upgrading to brushless. Thanks!
Awesome!! I have a couple of these batteries, however they use xt60 plugs so you would need an adapter for now. Definitely a fun car and rips on 3s even with stock, but hard to say how long the electronics will last!
Hey, The stock pinion gear on the brushed setup is 14 tooth and you installed a 17 tooth. Hows that possible without shifting the motor slightly? Im in the process of installing the same setup as you on my Yoncher yc400 (hbx 2995 platform) but I cant find a pinion gear thats 14-15 tooth to run. Any recommendations other than 17Tooth one? Also, is it a mod 0.6 pitch? Thanks,
Thanks for asking. Mine was actually a 16T, but there are different screw holes in the mount that allow for the 14T as well. So you should be able to use the 16T if it uses the same mount. This is the pinion I use and recommend: amzn.to/3tetgb5 Yes it is 0.6 mod👍
Just took a look at the motor mount and you were right about flipping it over and making it work with a 16T gear. Thanks again for pointing that out. I was off by a tooth or two in the previous comment.
Ya it’s been out for a while unfortunately. This kit here will work and be similar, if not better, but the esc is a little larger and doesn’t fit quite as neatly as the Hobbywing I’ve been told. amzn.to/3ICoXOg
You’re welcome! The esc comes with it in the Max10 combo, but I know it’s 60 amp. Here’s the link 😄 MAX10-3652SL-3300kv Combo www.amazon.com/dp/B072QBPS6J/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_932MKT5M2054T3PGC8ZY
@DerbyCityRC that makes sence.... so there is one plus to not having the center diff. . My 16890sa recently lost a pin in the front drive and had a blast drifting it till the battery died...
Oh, sorry. I don’t have one of those. The wheels look similar, but I can’t tell if they are the same. The stock tires on this car are about 3.75” in diameter I’d that helps. I like that truck I may have to get one!
Im thinking about getting this, but i cant find parts for it anywhere (most hbx models and variants are listed on the china websites) but this doesnt show up anywhere, is there somewhere to get parts for this?
Yes I’m not sure why this car isn’t listed on those sites, but parts are available on Haiboxing-hobby.com If the part you need doesn’t come up, you need to hit the contact button and send them an email with the part number you need. Then they will add it to the site and give you a link to purchase it. Not sure why they do it this way for now. Hope this helps! It’s a great RC! Not with these tires. I put some even bigger tires on, which you can see in this video: ua-cam.com/video/GvNNjAeEn10/v-deo.html I did get a speed on those, but that hasn’t made it into a video yet. If I remember right, it was around 37 mph on 2s! Insanely fun!!
You could definitely play around with motor kvs and gearing, but options are Limited. Can also just use a 3s battery. I personally don’t think it needs more power than the motor I put in it. For the size, it has all it needs! 😀
@@DerbyCityRC awesome.. just picked one of these up and I can already see myself breaking stuff.. not to mention I may have a Spektrum 4000kv coming. 🤪
@@DerbyCityRC Update.. Spektrum set up is in.. on a 3s it’s just nasty for this cheap little car. I wish I could post a photo of the install. It all fits clean under the body; 3s battery and all.
4000kv motor will still front flip. It's the brake level that matters for front flips. 4000kv motor might get the backflip down easier. Great video that car took a beating.
Good point! Lol I guess I meant front flip recovery once it’s done flipping and you want it to stabilize. The higher low end torque of the 3300 likely stops it quicker, which was sometimes an issue during this video. That’s why it took so many nice dives 😂. Thanks! This was a fun one and yes it sure did. Can’t wait to get this fixed!
@@DerbyCityRC yeah that's how KV works, front flips are all about the brake. I enjoyed seeing how well it snapped into these flips. Not like I can say, up the punch you nailed that to max already haha. Well keep it coming dude
Haha, yup! I’m a sucker for that low end torque! If I remember right, brake is set at 50% and wouldn’t let me go higher, so yes I was very surprised how quickly it snapped a FF! Thanks we’ll keep crankin!
How do u only have 1k subs? Crazy. I'm considering pikn a few of these up. Do you suggest getting a brushless combo and shocks right away? Or is there a brushless version with oil shocks available? Even a truck body is fine I just want durability.
Thanks bro! These trucks are awesome, but unfortunately they don’t have any that come with brushless yet. I definitely recommend the brushless combo I used, but there are cheaper ones available. HBX take note, here’s your brushless upgraded 2995!! PS It would be nice if any upgrades were available via Amazon Prime. Banggood takes 2-5 weeks, that’s a lot of missed fun time!
I’m not real sure if metal wheels would help. It’s more the total diameter I think that helps with the tricks. Well here is a motor that is comparable to rhe one I used. May do that heavier oil in the center diff at some point but need to better learn the pros/cons of doing that.
@RoughRidersTV yup the newer versions come with OF shocks. Heavier oil on those should make it better, something like 80-100 wt probably. 👍👍
Killer jumping and all kinds of high flying action! Amazing to me how you manage all the upgrades and damage control! I’d be in tears😂😂🤙🏽👊🏼👍🏻💯
Thanks!! Haha! Yes the repairs certainly keep me busy! It’s the thrill of landing lots of big flippy-doos without breaking that makes up for the bad landings that do cause the breakage. Or maybe I’m just making excuses 🤣🤣

Oh yeah...and 3652 motor...couldn't find out the kv. Lol... I will probably find out from you
Have you seen it available yet? I’ve been waiting for it to be easily available lol
Never mind! Just saw it on Banggood!

And Alibaba...for like $85 if you buy 4...how many you need? Lol
Well one will do 🤣🤣
I'm running mine with a $20 Gool RC 3500kv motor.
Thanks!

I have one coming today. I’m bummed because that motor is not available on Amazon. This is my first 1/12th scale. Keep the torcher tests coming.
Nice!
Use this motor combo: amzn.to/41mSXpe
The Hobbywing has been out of stock for a while and I’ve heard this one works perfectly roo. But the esc is slightly bigger so you have to mount it ontop somewhere instead of where the original one is.
I have the shocks and wheels you had linked on your upgrade video.
I had two spare wheels in my box.

Awesome video! What MM shocks fit this car? I clicked your link and I see they range from 70mm-110mm.
That’s weird!!
They’re about 87 mm

Hey Evan,
Don‘t even know how many times i‘ve watched this video now. Many times..
Always checking again and again what motor combo you used.
So you used the the 3300kv hobbywing combo, and i think you say a 4000kv would have been ok to use too.
I wanna get something for my 2996a.
Tell me what to buy. I‘ll listen…
Cheers,
Henrik
And sorry for bothering in advance.. 😊
This setup work well with 3s batteries ?
Very well! I added some even different tires in a video not long after this one you may want to see.
is there room and mount adjustability for larger pinions ? thanks
There is not adjustability for it without drilling your own holes in the motor mount. Some people have done it but I haven’t. I have a 16t pinion in mine and it allows you to go to a 14t, so not really a big help if you want more speed lol
@@DerbyCityRC thank you for the quick response
Your welcome!
It’s definitely mod .6 so I wouldn’t try anything else. Even if it feels and looks close. If it’s not exact it will eat the gears up.
Great video.... Congratulations.... How many tooths in the stock pinion and how many tooths did you put in there???...
Thanks bro!!!
I kept the same pinion size. Stock and new pinion are both 16 teeth 👍👍
Hey man! Whats the top speed on this setup? Also, how is the torque in comparison to the stock 550 motor? Im planning on upgrading mine. cheers.
The torque is amazing. I have another video on this with even better tires. If I remember right, I got 37 mph on 2s. Still need to get another video going on it with that info. Definitely a good choice!
Thanks for watching!
Hey man! Im looking to upgrade the motor on my 2995, what is a more budget friendly alternative?
Well I am actually about to do a budget friendly brushless conversion on my Flyhal fc610, which is essentially the exact same car. So I would wait for that video just because it’s a motor set I’ve never tried out but I have a good feeling about it. I have one video coming out in the next day or two, then I believe that conversion will be next.
Which 4000 motor would you recommend for this rc ? Its hard to come by the one you put in so i figured i would look for something else
@@DerbyCityRCis this combo better than the one in the description?
Did you need wheel spacers to add the larger tires on? Looks so much better
Yes I use the 15mm spacers from here: amzn.to/45CUuYY
@@DerbyCityRC awesome thanks man. I know the go to these days is brushless motors but how reliable would you say this setup is running on 3s? I just got this and ran through a few 3s batteries so far and it rips for a brushed motor for sure. Is this a Setup that I can run for a while without issue ? I was thinking to add a fan to the motor to help with temps but it only gets a little warm really
@4doorxj I did run mine on 2”3s once and it did great. The esc has a temp cutoff so it may be fine for quite a while!
i did same upgrade you listed for the Flyhal FC610 truck this setup cogs bad needs a push start to roll. the program card i have for hobby wing does not seem to set correctly. can you please help me resolve this issue.
Interesting. So the $40 motor combo is what you got? That’s odd as mine doesn’t have that issue. Just in 2s?

@@DerbyCityRC thanks you !!!
You bet!
Looks like the motor and ESC have been discontinued. Do you have any other recommendations in the same price point?
Yes I guess I forgot to update it in this video. I’ll fix that.
This is a comparable motor with an even higher voltage esc. Only difference is the esc doesn’t fit down where the stock one does like the Hobbywing so you have to get a bit more creative with placement.

Would you reccomend is fine just the tire and shock upgrades? are there batteries that we can get that would simply last longer?
I believe the tires and shocks would be good, but it’s amazing with the motor upgrade!
I believe this is the battery I used, but it depends on the connector your car has. This won’t fit the stock connector.

where do you get spare parts for the 2995? I just broke an upper control arm and only found one place to order from online. the site seems kinda shady and haven't heard back in over a week.
Some parts are available on Amazon, but no arms yet. The best place to get them is from Haiboxing-hobby.com.
That’s the official hbx site.
@@DerbyCityRC ok good that’s the site I ordered from, hopefully they come through. Always waiting on parts it seems lol
You had some big jumps for just right out front of your house! That thing looks brutally tough... is it really that much better with the tire upgrade?
Those tires were much better. You couldn’t control it at all in the air with the original ones. Of course the motor was what really brought it alive.
I have even bigger jumps in my Kraton videos. We have a blast! Lol
@DerbyCityRC: Just discovered your channel and really enjoying what you do. Question - the motor linked to upgrade this is currently unavailable. Would the motor taken from the 'Rlaarlo / Croboll' car you reviewed a while back be a good substitute or is there a better option you'd recommend?
Thanks!
I know it’s been out for a while! I would go with this kit:
Same price, same motor specs. The esc is bigger physically though so it does not fit in the alotted space. You need to get creative and mount it ontop of the servo or upper chassis brace. amzn.to/3vchq4T
@@DerbyCityRC Thank you! You're awesome!
You’re welcome!!
Can the 2995 transmitter be used with an upgraded receiver?
It cannot (as far as I know). But a higher end controller with a new receiver would be better anyway (would also need a new esc though. What are you trying to get out of it?
It's kinda slow, so I just bought a cheap brushless motor and esc to play around with it, learn how it works. Didn't realize I needed a new receiver and transmitter as well. I watched your flyhall upgrade video after I posted on this video and went with that transmitter combo.
@kyletyler7079 cool! That combo should be fine!
Finally got one 😁, just not sure how i want to do the brushless conversion. I have a wp 10bl60 id like to use, but space is tight, it looks like the max10 is about the same size, but smaller fan. Not without altering the motor mount. It can fit either a 14 or a 16T
No, the stock wheels are a larger diameter than the 16889 wheels. They are a bit thinner though.
@@DerbyCityRC I mean 16886 not 16889 (1/14 scale desert buggy hbx)
Oh, sorry. I don’t have one of those. The wheels look similar, but I can’t tell if they are the same. The stock tires on this car are about 3.75” in diameter I’d that helps.

The gears are 0.6 MOD. Stock pinion is 16 tooth. This is the gear I used right here: amzn.to/3OID2dt

Good point! Lol I guess I meant front flip recovery once it’s done flipping and you want it to stabilize. The higher low end torque of the 3300 likely stops it quicker, which was sometimes an issue during this video. That’s why it took so many nice dives 😂.
