David is so underrated. Highly intelligent, gifted writer/musician.

Add sibling rivalry to creative differences and no wonder they didn’t last together, but this is the first time hearing David and he seems like a real thoughtful, kind person.

Some very sage advice about giving the band a portion of the song credits. If only more artists did that but bands are seldom paragons of enlightened equity.

Thanks! Very interesting! I was just listening to some old Dire Straits records and live clips today and thinking there was something special about the two first albums. They sounded more like a band. David Knopfler and Pick Withers played with a better, laid back time than any of the people that came after them.

Didn't know David knew Jack Sonni, curious how Pick has also a photo of himself with his replacement in the band, Terry Williams on FB. Looks like pretty much every member of the Straits family knew and worked with each other at some point.

Yes and that Hal worked with David, you can see almost all of the old members have played togheter in the tribute band the straits/dire straits experience aswell. Only one that doesnt want anything to do with dire straits is Mark...

You gotta remember, David didn’t write the songs that made Dire Straits famous. Mark is a guitar whiz and once he got the fame, recognition and money he was the boss! He obviously had the vision in his head to be the sole writer and it was Marks story. I think Dave wanted to be in a band as a democracy but Mark had other ideas. And finally it must hurt to have missed out on one of the biggest bands in history, especially when the reached dizzy heights in the mid 80s. Like the woman that broke your heart and slipped away, it hurts so bad!!!

I think he didn't feel like missing out, Dire Straits became famous rather quickly, and were already a big band around "Making Movies". As for the stadium rock fame in the 80s, i don't think David wanted any part of that.

My uncle actually worked with Jack Sonni’s father at an insurance company here in Connecticut.

I absolutely love David's rhythm guitar playing on the first two albums and I wish I could tell him that. His playing and Pick's drumming set those two albums so far apart from the later Dire Straits albums that I just can't listen to them (the later albums) - the feel has gone.

"Skateaway" and "Ride Across the River" go much farther than the early albums.

Being the little brother of a music god has got to be both an amazing blessing and similarly scaled curse. Tough spot.

Absolutely! Communiqué will always be my fav, start to finish a masterwork. Unique sound and stunning production. How many albums like that you could get in '79? One of a kind.

I’ve always thought the songwriter got too much of a share especially when the musical arrangements that make it a success are done by others. As David says, yes if they come in with all the ideas how it’s going to go but that rarely ever happens.

Arrangements are parts for recording. They're not compositions. Composition drives arrangement.

I think song writing within a band should be something like this. If the song writer comes in with 90% of the parts the band deserves no credit for the arrangement for without the song their possible good arrangement idea's would have been worthless. A band relies heavily on the song writer to continually feed them musically and food to mouth wise. Without the primary song writer most of the band would be driving taxis and serving beers so they should be forever grateful to him!

Wow, hearing ex band members who left the band early is sad. I liked the band when David and Pick were in it.
